There are two media companies on the Fortune 500 from the Publishing and Printing industry. But just one of them made money last year: Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. Landing at number three hundred forty-one on the 500, its revenue was up almost 11 percent, to about nine billion. The company includes the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, HarperCollins Publishers and many prominent titles in the U-K and Australia.

The numbers are pretty clear: Americans are drinking less beer. And that’s hurting big beer makers like Molson Coors. The company’s revenues and profits both took a hit last year, pushing it down 19 spots on the Fortune 500 to number two hundred ninety four. For many years, Coors was only available west of the Mississippi. This gave it an almost cult-like status. Reportedly, Presidents Eisenhower and Ford both smuggled cases of the beer back to D-C after West Coast trips.

If you have a credit card from Lowe’s, Old Navy or Sam’s Club, you are familiar with number one-hundred-seventy-three on the Fortune 500 – Synchrony Financial. It’s the country’s largest private label credit card provider with revenues of eighteen-billion. Synchrony was once a part of another well-known company on the list… General Electric sold off the consumer financial services company in 20-14.

Despite the prestige that comes with claiming a spot on the Fortune 500, not all companies who make the cut are in the black. In fact, forty-five of this year’s companies LOST money. The biggest loser on the list? General Electric. Its revenues dropped 2-billion-dollars from last year, to one-hundred-twenty-billion. This caused G-E to continue its descent down the list… slipping out of the top twenty to number twenty-one.

Fifty-six years. That’s how long Leslie – or “Les” – Wexner has been C-E-O of L-Brands. It’s the longest tenure of any top dog found on the Fortune 500. Which brands does this veteran executive oversee? Think women’s underwear and scented candles. That’s right, the longest-running C-E-O is in charge of ladies’ lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret and the home fragrance chain Bath and Body Works.

There’s a decent chance you’ve seen an ad for Wayfair - the online retailer that sells arm chairs, pillows and kitchen tables. If you haven’t, the company hopes you will - it’s spending close to one billion dollars on marketing this year. Skeptics say this type of spending - along with investments in infrastructure and expansion - are not sustainable. The company is deep in the red. It lost more than half a billion dollars last year.

GameStop used to dominate the video game industry. But now, it may be on the verge of defeat. The company earned a distinction on this year’s Fortune 500 that no company wants: GameStop’s profits dropped 2,039(two thousand and thirty nine) percent from the year before. Other Fortune 500 members lost money in 2018, but GameStop suffered the largest percentage drop by far. That doesn’t erase the 8-point-8-5 billion it earned in revenue last year.

When you pay for your Starbucks grande latte, it may be hard to imagine that the coffee chain is making billions of dollars on brew—even at five bucks a pop. But it is. At number 121 on this year’s Fortune 500, it’s pulling in higher revenues than any other food service business on the list. But Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson wants more. He has his eye set on boosting sales in two markets: the U.S., and China.
