So we should be called “due-nothing” servants, pun intended, which may reflect Jesus' own sense of humor. While this servant clearly is not a  “do-nothing” person, it is also clear that a servant is “due nothing” for services rendered.

The name Lazarus - in Hebrew “Eliezer” -  means “God helps.” Before Abraham had any sons, he had only one heir to his fortune: his steward, Eliezer. In Jewish tradition, Abraham’s steward, Eliezer of Damascus, was an angel. Lazarus, sitting outside the gate of the rich man, was an angel in disguise.

More importantly, the steward has been treated generously by the master since he was only fired instead of being more severely punished. The steward spends his master’s generosity.

Luke gives us not two, but three parables. There is a rule of three in story telling: "Cinderella" and her two sisters; to use a non-kosher example, "The Three Little Pigs." Usually, the third story reveals the surprise: "There was a man who had two sons."

The sculptor imposes nothing, but only frees what is held captive in stone. Discipleship is something like this. It does not work by means of addition or acquisition, but by release, of prying loose, of letting go of the need to have our life circumstances be a certain way in order for us to live, or pray, or be deeply happy.

Rather than seeking the best place, Jesus asks us to turn the table and begin with those who don’t even have a place at the table. When we start from the bottom, everyone is included, all the way up.

In Hebrew, the word for Egypt is Mitzrayim , which literally means a very narrow place.  To come out of Egypt, the Children of Israel had to pass through a narrow, difficult way. God meets us in the narrow places and leads us out into the land of promise.

A voice from the crowd asks Jesus to mediate in a family inheritance dispute. While Jesus is teaching us how to give our lives away, this man wants to make sure he doesn’t lose anything.
