 In this most unlikely of places the garden has suddenly returned. Paradise has emerged in the cross-bound conversation between two dying men: one a representative of sin reaching for wholeness,  the other a Son of the fullness of God reaching toward what has been lost.

Jesus is teaching us ow to live in the midst of collapse. "Do not be terrified!" Fear shuts us down. Instead, Jesus invites us  to see this as a gift: "When they bring you before kings and governors: This will give you an opportunity to testify."

I am in the Holy Land; we have Sunday Mass on the Mount of Olives at the Church of All Nations.

Whatever we believe about death is an important question for us because it not only changes the way we imagine God, it changes the way we live our lives.

The story begins with Zacchaeus wanting to see who Jesus was. Up until now, everyone has been looking down on Zacchaeus or overlooking him. For the first time in his life, someone looks up to Zacchaeus.

We don’t know anything about the widow’s cause, whether she is right or wrong; we only know one thing: she is faithful! She kept coming again and again, relentlessly pursuing her claim.

The lepers immediately demonstrate their faith by following Jesus’ instruction even though they still have their disease. Only as they are on their way do we find out that “they were made clean.” Jesus has responded to their cries by drawing from them an act of faith that results in their physical healing.

So we should be called “due-nothing” servants, pun intended, which may reflect Jesus' own sense of humor. While this servant clearly is not a  “do-nothing” person, it is also clear that a servant is “due nothing” for services rendered.

The name Lazarus - in Hebrew “Eliezer” -  means “God helps.” Before Abraham had any sons, he had only one heir to his fortune: his steward, Eliezer. In Jewish tradition, Abraham’s steward, Eliezer of Damascus, was an angel. Lazarus, sitting outside the gate of the rich man, was an angel in disguise.

More importantly, the steward has been treated generously by the master since he was only fired instead of being more severely punished. The steward spends his master’s generosity.
