Luke gives us not two, but three parables. There is a rule of three in story telling: "Cinderella" and her two sisters; to use a non-kosher example, "The Three Little Pigs." Usually, the third story reveals the surprise: "There was a man who had two sons."

It does not work by means of addition or acquisition, but by release, of prying loose, of letting go of the need to have our life circumstances be a certain way in order for us to live, or pray, or be deeply happy.

In Hebrew, the word for Egypt is Mitzrayim , which literally means a very narrow place.  To come out of Egypt, the Children of Israel had to pass through a narrow, difficult way. God meets us in the narrow places and leads us out into the land of promise.

The two sisters are focused in different ways on single-hearted devotion to the Christ. Jesus is the center of attention of Martha's hospitality and the center of Mary's as DISCIPLE, one who is being taught.
