The beatitudes begin: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." The very first word that comes out of Jesus’ mouth is “blessed.”

In calling first one set of brothers, Peter and Andrew, and then a second set of brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Jesus is enacting the vision of a new Israel. Eventually Jesus will go on to choose 12 disciples; a new people of God.

John the Baptist testifies that he saw the Spirit resting on Jesus when he came out of the water and realized that this man must be both “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” and also the “Son of God”.

Disaster comes from two Latin words ‘dis’ and ‘astre,’ meaning “separated from one’s star”. We face disaster when we are separated from our inner guiding spirit, separated from our deep inner wisdom.

Last week, John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness. John is like a midwife: He had the freedom, the passion, and the clear boundaries that are needed to get anything started. John is a wild man who "clears the threshing floor,"  but after that he really does not have much to do.

If the wolf can be the guest of the lamb, and the bear and cow be friends,  then no injury or hate can be a guest within the kingdom of my heart. Eden's peace and harmony will only return when first, in my heart, there hides no harm or ruin, for the Peaceable Kingdom is in my hands.

My family is having a different sort of Advent this year. My nephew and his wife are awaiting the birth of their third child in the next two weeks or so. No one knows the exact day or hour, so we watch and wait for news.
