The name Lazarus - in Hebrew “Eliezer” -  means “God helps.” Before Abraham had any sons, he had only one heir to his fortune: his steward, Eliezer. In Jewish tradition, Abraham’s steward, Eliezer of Damascus, was an angel. Lazarus, sitting outside the gate of the rich man, was an angel in disguise.

More importantly, the steward has been treated generously by the master since he was only fired instead of being more severely punished. The steward spends his master’s generosity.

Luke gives us not two, but three parables. There is a rule of three in story telling: "Cinderella" and her two sisters; to use a non-kosher example, "The Three Little Pigs." Usually, the third story reveals the surprise: "There was a man who had two sons."

In Hebrew, the word for Egypt is Mitzrayim , which literally means a very narrow place.  To come out of Egypt, the Children of Israel had to pass through a narrow, difficult way. God meets us in the narrow places and leads us out into the land of promise.

Abraham bargained with God to save the city for the sake of a few righteous ones. Kabbalah, or Jewish mysticism, expanded the idea: “The world must contain not less than 36 righteous individuals in each generation for whom God preserves the world."
