The Scribes and Pharisees have built their identity over and against this woman they see as a sinner. In separating themselves from her, they see themselves as good. One by one, beginning with the elders, they walked away from the one who was approaching them with forgiveness.

It seems that in this story there is only Jesus and the tempter. But Jesus is not alone; just as God led the Israelites into the wilderness, where they were tested, so Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where he, too, is tested.

Within the grip of winter,  it is almost impossible to imagine the spring. 
The gray landscape is shorn of color. Winter is the oldest season; it has some quality of the absolute.

When Jesus says, to "love your enemies." I think he is challenging us to meet them, to get to know them for who they are rather than who we imagine them to be. Genuine meeting leads to love.
