Meanwhile, Homeland Security Secretary (and villain in an imaginary movie titled Puppies vs. Kristi Noem) straight-up refused to answer Representative Lauren Underwood’s question about whether due process is a fundamental right in the Constitution. Because apparently, answering basic civics questions is optional now.

Then, the New York Times reports that U.S. intelligence agencies don’t actually believe Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro, is working with the Tren de Aragua criminal gang—which would be inconvenient for the Trump administration, since that’s their entire excuse for deporting Venezuelan immigrants to a prison in El Salvador. Facts: tricky little things.

Speaking of problems, Trump just can’t quit Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who remains determined to redefine "military leadership" by misplacing planes and halting aid to Ukraine—without having the actual authority to do so. Then there’s China, Trump’s invisible trade deals, and his latest plan to start sending detainees to Libya. Because if there’s one thing history has taught us, it’s that detention policies dreamed up by incompetent authoritarians always end super well.

And finally, some good news! MAGA had a truly terrible night in Texas, losing 0-11 in Tarrant County’s three largest cities, proving that even deep-red territory sometimes chooses not to be ridiculous.

Now, let’s play a game—guess which three things it does not actually restore. If you guessed “equality, opportunity, and meritocracy,” congratulations! You understand how words work better than the folks who wrote this executive order.

Meanwhile, the U.S. economy shrank 0.3% in the first quarter of 2025, and in an absolutely shocking turn of events, Trump blamed everything but himself. His tariffs? His policies? Nope. Instead, he mused, “You could even say the next quarter is sort of Biden.” Ah yes, the well-known economic principle of “future blame assignment.”

Trump also took time to audition for the role of the Grinch, shrugging off concerns about rising costs with, “Maybe kids will have to live with two dolls instead of thirty, and maybe the two dolls will cost a couple bucks more.” Who needs joy when you can have inflation?

In legal news, a federal judge ordered the release of Colombian student Mohsen Mahdawi, detained by I.C.E. during his citizenship interview—a move that could reasonably be classified as what should have happened in the first place. Meanwhile, Trump continues to ignore the Supreme Court’s order to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the U.S., because apparently, judicial rulings are just suggestions now.

And finally, 52% of Americans believe Trump is “a dangerous dictator whose power should be limited before he destroys American democracy.” The real question: what are the other 48% looking at?

This week on The Final Word, we tackle a buffet of chaos that’s equal parts baffling and infuriating. First, we pretend to be surprised as Trump once again reverses course, this time on firing Fed Chair Jerome Powell and those oh-so-effective Chinese tariffs. Consistency is for losers, apparently.

Speaking of meltdowns, Elon Musk and the Treasury Secretary reportedly got into a shouting match in the West Wing and had to be separated by an aide. Because nothing says “stable governance” like billionaire temper tantrums in the halls of power. In a rare silver lining, Musk has announced he’ll “reduce” his time at the Department of Government Efficiency—coincidentally right after Tesla posted a 71% drop in quarterly profits. Efficiency indeed.

Next, we try to untangle the mental gymnastics of economic polling. Fifty-five percent of Americans say they’re not confident in Trump’s economic decision-making, but that means 45% are confident? Meanwhile, 87% are worried about inflation, and 76% fear a recession. Math? Logic? Anyone?

And as if that wasn’t dystopian enough, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is now creating a national autism registry by pulling private medical records. Nothing to worry about there, right? Oh, and the Trump administration is proving once again that cruelty is the point by planning to eliminate the 988 suicide hotline’s specialized support for LGBTQ youth.
