The tradition of giving out free condoms to Olympic athletes dates back to 1988 when AIDS fears prompted the Winter Olympics hosted in Canada to embrace a new way of thinking and provide 6,000 free condoms. In the intervening years the practice has only grown and with the upcoming Paris Olympics lifting the so called “intimacy ban” imposed during COVID, condoms may have never been more important.
