    Bible: Joshua 24:26-33
    Length: 40 min.

Overview: It is important to have a good conclusion. To communicate well, the conclusion matters. That leads to question- why does Joshua conclude with three funerals- 24-28 seems has an answer. Joshua let the people depart to their inheritance. These funerals are put here on purpose. Our task is to find out why.----Three reasons why Joshua concludes in this fashion----1. to give us a sense of completion--It informs us that God has kept his promise. These three funerals take place in the land. These men have received the inheritance promised to them and they are being buried there. Joshua had a promise of the land. Joshua did not depart till God fulfilled that promise. Back in Gen 50, Joseph requested his bones not be left in Egypt. Shechem was bought by Jacob. In Gen 12, we see Abraham pass though Shechem. And that is where Joseph was buried. Interesting, but what is the significance- Heb 11-22 has the answer. Of all of acts of Joseph, this act is the one mentioned. He died in faith understanding the exodus and trusting in God to keep his word.----2. to remind us of declension--This leads us into what follows in the Book of Judges. These funerals marks the end of an era. The company that left Egypt have all died. Eleazar was high priest during wilderness wondering -Ex 28-. He brings the people into the land. He worked with Joshua -Num 34-17-. But what is going to happen next- We know it is declension -Judges 2-10-11-. God is pleased to use godly authority for our benefit. But we have a warning here from a godless posterity.----3. to give us a word of expectation--Death is still present. The curse is sin is still active. We have a greater Joshua and Eleazar who can save from death.

Overview: Some people say that Paul cannot be speaking as a regenerate man in this text because Paul says that he is sold under sin. This raises a fundamental question- Is this passage a personal testimony of the apostle as a regenerate man-----There are four points that show that Paul is speaking of himself here as a regenerate man-----1. The man speaking despises sin----2. The man speaking desires to do good----3. The man delights in the law----4. The man desires deliverance----Application-----1. There is a solemn challenge--Do we despise sin, desire to do good, delight in the law, and desire deliverance-----2. There is a word of comfort--Those who hate sin and love God can be comforted because they are justified by faith in Christ's work.----3. There is a word of confidence--We have hope in the gospel of Christ.

    Subtitle: The Book of Joshua

    Event: Sunday - AM
    Date: 3/11/2018
    Bible: Joshua 24:1-25
    Length: 44 min.

Overview: Men are responsible to hear the word of God and then respond to it. True preaching demands a response from the hearers. True preaching aims at change. It demands people make the right response to the Word of God. It calls for a choice. We look at this choice in Joshua 24.----1. choice comes with an exhortation to obey -24-14-----The choice is brought to us in the form of a command. Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him. The word 'serve' has a focus on worship -Psalm 11-1-2-. It summarizes what it is to be a true Christian. To offer our entire life for the good of God is our reasonable services -Roman 12-1-. Choice is not simply a matter of preference. There is only one right choice to make. There are alternatives, life and death. But only one choice is right. So choose life.----2. choice comes with evidence to consider----The Lord God is giving evidence of all the things He has done -24-2-13-. The evidence is such that it shuts us up to the conclusion that the Lord alone is God and we should serve him. We have more evidence than this. We have the resurrection of Jesus Christ. If you choose to walk away from God, you are choosing to walk away from the evidence.----3. choice comes with an example to encourage us -24-15-18-----Joshua presents himself as an example to follow. As for me and my house, we will serve. If faith is vital to you, then it will be vital to be those around you. The father and mother have a tremendous role to play----4. choice comes with a cost to count -24-19-25-----Joshua is urging a choice with an understanding. It will not be easy to follow the Lord. But we must not look back----Have you made the choice this day to follow the Lord-

    Length: 47 min.

Overview: In Joshua 23, the Israelites are living and established in the Promised Land. Joshua was now old and reminds the people of their responsibilities to stay faithful to God. Today we are looking at the people's responsibilities as they are recipients of grace. We can look at their responsibilities in several ways-----1. In light of their privilege--The Israelites were given the privilege of being born into God's covenant. Therefore, Joshua urges them to take advantage of that blessing and follow God. God also gives us the opportunity to follow him. We must take that opportunity by God's grace while we can.----2. In light of their peril--There are still nations surrounding the Israelites. Their hearts are at stake from being influenced by those pagan nations. Our hearts also face dangers while we live in this fallen world. The Israelites were exhorted to keep their hearts pure from bad influence and we must do the same.----3. In light of God's precepts--The Israelites' duty was to keep and to do God's commandments. We must also remember to follow the straight path. To do so requires that we be courageous and vigilant.----4. In light of God's predictions--God predicted that some of them would fall away. Those people would be driven from the land. Therefore, Joshua exhorts them to continue to follow God, lest they fall away. We cannot lose our salvation. However, if we profess faith in God but don't possess faith, we will be cut off.

Overview: Overview of this passage-----1. The commendation of the eastern tribes--Joshua commends the eastern tribes for following God and being faithful to Him. He then sends them towards the east to their assigned lands.----2. The construction of a new altar--The eastern tribes build an altar by the Jordan.----3. The consternation of the western tribes--The Israelites are concerned when they hear that the altar has been built and they prepare to go to war. Their consternation is well-placed. They are worried that the eastern tribes are turning away from God to apostasy.----4. The consideration of the new altar--The Israelites ask why the eastern tribes have erected the altar and they are given an answer. The tribes say that the altar was built for God and was not to be used for burnt offerings.----5. The confirmation of the will of God--The Israelites are content with the answer that they are given and there is unity and peace.----Application for us taken from the example of the tribes on both sides of the Jordan-----1. From the western tribes we must be rebuked as we see an example of their desire for purity in the worship of God.----2. From the eastern tribes we must be reminded by their example as they display a burden of pure unity in the people of God.

    Date: 2/18/2018
    Bible: Joshua 21:1-12
    Length: 50 min.

Overview: Joshua 21 gives the last details the of inheritance. The Levites did not have a portion in the land to remind them the land is not their ultimate portion. The Lord was to be their portion in the land of the living. Yet this chosen and privileged tribe was not to be neglected. God would supply the temporal needs of the Levites by giving them cities to dwell in. In this passage which teaches us about God's provision, we learn about----1. the prayers of God's servants--Our prayers are to be scripturally governed. The prayers of God's servants were based on Num 35-2-3. We are to plead promises in our prayers that are governed by the Word of God. Our prayer life must be scripturally governed. 1 John 5-14 instructs us to ask for things in God's revealed Word.----2. the provision for God's servants--God does not neglect the temporal welfare of his people. We are a kingdom of priests like Levites. The Lord knows we have need of a physical nature -Phil 4-19-. We often want more than we need and believe wrongly God is reluctant to bless us. God sometimes withholds that which may harm us. 1 Cor 9-13-14 shows God's provision for the preacher so they have freedom to pursue gospel work for the benefit of the congregation. The children of Israel give out of their inheritance -out of what God had given them-. Num 35-8 speaks of giving according to one's means. The preacher needs to guard against greed for filthy lucre.----3. a presence among God's saints--The Levites lived among the people. They were teachers of the law to teach God's word to his people -Deut 33-8,10-. They were types of Christ pointing people to the true Priest they needed.
