When shame surfaces, our bodies react as the recurring shame narratives echo in our minds.
Shame not only affects our thoughts but also impacts our physical well-being. It activates the sympathetic nervous system, triggering the fight, flight, or freeze response. Consequently, shame can leave us feeling trapped in distress, leading to self-harming behaviors rather than healing ones. However, by understanding how our bodies are designed and applying God’s healing, everything can shift.
Recently, I experienced a shift that allowed me to see things differently. And when we see differently, we live differently. When reading Dr. Michelle Bengtson’s latest book, Sacred Scars, I had an “ah ha” moment in discovering a deeper truth about how shame impacted my brain and my “fight” response.
MERCY. The truth sets us free. Yes it does! I want you to know this truth too!
In our discussion today, I invite you to join me in a conversation with Dr. Michelle Bengtson, the author of Sacred Scars.
Before becoming a best-selling author, she spent over 20 years as a board-certified neuropsychologist in private practice, offering hope and healing to numerous individuals. Today, she is here to equip you with empowering truths.
Though shame is distressing, you have the choice to break free from the instinct to fight, flee, or freeze. It’s time to embrace your freedom and move forward confidently!
