  • FDR3598 The Feminist Housewife? - Call In Show - February 16th, 2017
Question 1. [1:28] – “I've spent the majority of my adult life devoted to my career, considering myself a 'fiercely independent' feminist and not allowing men to have much control in a relationship. However, a few years ago I started dating someone who didn't accept this behavior and I found myself slowly taking on a traditional girlfriend role, now as a wife and mother. Things have gone really well between us and I'm happy, but still find myself missing my old life. I've heard you talk an awful lot about how women are wired to want men to provide resources while they take care of the young, but I don't feel it's coming natural to me. Am I broken? What can I do to ensure that I don't fall into old patterns? Do you think there's enough space for a woman to balance being a great wife and mom, yet also continue to stay in charge of her career without sacrificing family?”

Question 2: [1:26:49] – “As I lived in a communist/socialist country and then moved to UK 10 years ago and I see life is much difficult in capitalism and there is poverty everywhere, can you please explain to me, Stefan why you always say capitalism is the best?”

Question 3: [1:51:32] - "Now that we are in the "post-truth" era and we see a large factual divide between the left and right, do you believe it is more crucial than ever that higher education institutions start teaching from a non-partisan point of view, explaining both sides of the debate?"

Question 4: [2:15:39] – “I am a libertarian at heart. I believe in the free market, small governments and allowing people to succeed or fail by their own virtues. I also recognize that certain cultures and populations are incompatible with a free society. Libertarians and their insistence on open borders present a contradiction. Is it possible to square that circle?”

  • FDR3597 Out of Control - Call In Show - February 15th, 2017
Question 1. [1:44] – “I have been wondering about this for some time now. It seems that we have become much more 'segmented', and 'boxed' into little groups. This occurs in the political realm with identity politics, as well as the echo chambers we build for ourselves on social media. So my questions for you are the following: Why has the public sphere become less universal (regarding the rise of identity politics and the decline of the public intellectual)? How can 'we' re-universalize an understanding, or at least an interest in philosophy (and politics more generally)?”

Question 2: [20:50] – “I am wondering; what is the reason or mentality behind the desire of the progressive movement to divide people into subcategories? I have noticed that people that choose to divide themselves also tend to be more aggressive to anyone whom they view as opposition, regardless of that person's actual beliefs or actions. Why is this and how did this mentality come about?”

Question 3: [55:39] – “I am a 24-year-old gay man with a stable job and very little college debt. I find it hard to find someone, as many gays are very left leaning and we inevitably end up fighting about politics, or are not willing to commit to a single person. I would like to know: What does Stefan thinks gay sexual market value is? Also what advice does Stefan have for someone in my position, how many of my values should I compromise to be with someone, based on what gay sexual market value means?”

Question 4: [1:08:06] – “Do you think that my refusal to adopt the racialized world view of the US is the denial of reality or the maintenance of a healthy mindset? Is it impossible for us as humans to not place persons into categories or in-groups and out-groups, and assign value judgements to these categories, particularly in the realm of politics?”

Question 5: [2:05:48] – “Our two-year-old has out of control tantrums that have been getting worse since he was 18 months old. We have just celebrated the birth of our daughter who was born in January are trying to figure out how to handle my son's temper tantrums before I go back to work in March. I'm on maternity leave now, and my husband is a stay at home dad, but with these tantrums, we can't figure out how he will handle our son and an infant. Please help!"

  • FDR3595 Why Free Speech Is All That Matters
Civilization is a conversation, and moral progress is always the most shocking part of that conversation. Every great moral advance in human history has been met with shocked revulsion by significant existing power groups.

The great abolitionist Wilberforce spend more than three decades making the case for ending slavery, before the British Parliament finally voted to outlaw the hideous practice on the third of the globe ruled by Great Britain. John Milton wrote his passionate defense of free speech in 1644 – freedom of the press was not achieved in England until 1695, more than half a century later.

Equal rights for women and minorities, freedom of trade, separation of church and state, the right to divorce – each of these advances was considered an appalling break with virtuous traditions – and they all have one thing in common. One thing. In the absence of free speech, these advances would never have occurred.

  • FDR3592 Surviving Dystopia - Call In Show - February 8th, 2017
Question 1: [1:14] - “Venezuela is hell; Death, hunger, sickness, and violence are galloping across the entire land. There are no prospects and no safety. Many are still hopeful for a change, but I don't see it happening any time soon because of the level of entrenchment of the regime against an ineffectual opposition. Additionally, most people don't even care to understand why we reached this sorry state. Do you really think the creative, intelligent Venezuelans should remain here to waste their lives?”

Question 2: [57:24] - “With a very young daughter, is it better to have her in daycare part time, but living in a better home and neighborhood, or, should I quit my job and move to a smaller home in a neighborhood of less quality but be a stay at home dad?”

Question 3: [1:21:13] - “I'm a recent college graduate and landed a job in my field, though I have slowly come to realize that I do not want to pursue it further. Considering the large amount of debt and time I have put into this, it has left me feeling bitter and frustrated. I am acutely aware that my career indecision is now using up valuable time that should be spent building up work skills. I have always felt that the right career lies at the intersection of what you have an aptitude for, what the world needs, and what you enjoy. I just can't seem to get there. In your experience, how did you find the right career and do you have any advice or pitfalls to avoid along the way?”

  • FDR3593 The End of World War II - Call In Show - February 8th, 2017
Question 1: [2:10] - “In one of your YouTube videos, I believe you called the use of Nuclear Arms by the United States in World War III "unjustified," although I may be mistaken. Either way, do you believe that this action was morally correct and/or the best choice available to the U.S. Government, and is there a difference between these two things?”

Question 2: [39:04] - “Why do you not take a more active stance in telling your listeners about the effectiveness of the virtues of patience and tolerance when conducting a debate with people? This is important because in todays society we encounter people who argue based on feelings and propaganda but why should we take what they say so personal? In my own experience, remaining calm when for example being called a racist and staying with my argument or maybe presenting it in a different way is more effective for actually changing people’s minds than correcting their morality. I know that you have no responsibility over your audiences decisions but I think it would be smart to show them a more effective way of getting the message of reason and truth across.”

Question 3: [1:17:55] - "If there is evidence that Universal Basic Income (UBI) can eliminate poverty and is at least superior to welfare, would it not be unethical to implement UBI?"

Question 4: [1:33:05] - "Having grown up in Puerto Rico in the 1960s and seen the corrosive effect of dependence on government handouts, I am very alarmed to see the younger generation of women wanting to be dependent on government - birth control, tampons, government-paid abortions are just the start. My generation mostly saw themselves as becoming financially independent. What can people (and women) like myself do to reverse the tide?"

Question 5: [2:02:35] - “Common practices seem to suggest the answers to depression have to come from within by "letting go" of what troubles you. I've long felt that this means lying to and convincing yourself that what you're thinking isn't true, when it very well could be. Am I wrong in finding commonly suggested remedies for depression philosophically dishonest?"
