Jonna is the UK-based label owner of City Fly Records and Mysterious Works, two imprints that specialise in releasing soul-flecked bombs. He has also released music for labels like BBE Music, Lumberjacks in Hell, R2, The Groovestage, and Shadeleaf Music. Last month, he dropped Fly Family Vol.1 on City Fly Records, which features no-nonsense cuts from Simbad, Javonntte, Kez YM, and and Lay-Far. He also has two 12"s due soon on Intimate Friends, a sister label to Lumberjacks In Hell. It felt like the perfect time for Jonna to give us a wee homage to the dancefloor.

Stev Zar @sstevann is the Melbourne-based DJ behind UMAMI, a party that celebrates QT/POC talent that resides in or passes thru Burn City. Despite the lockdowns, UMAMI are still bringing together their community via a weekly series of livestreams on their instagram (umami.collective). Stev's mix is a perfect distillation of their chaotic, colourful, and cohesive sound. Shake yr ass.

From Stev: "Travelling around Auckland and Sydney for gigs in January I got to explore various spaces playing club/rave music, I fell back in love again with music after not feeling inspired for a while. I put my head down this month and cycled through the depths of Bandcamp, Soundcloud, YouTube and through old vinyls for body-moving tunes. Included in this mix is a plethora of my favourite artists; M.E.S.H, Bored Lord, Tygapaw, Player, Ase Manual and quest?onmarc to name a few. All pioneers of Electronic/Ballroom/Techno/Jersey sounds. Every track in this mix I hold dear to my heart, I attribute my success to these phenomenal selectors as I play their tracks in clubs while shaking my ass.

I started off the mix as an ode to my alter ego, AN 1Ć (Ahn-Itch), in which they play more experiment/euphoric sounds. I then entered a phase of Club/Ballroom/Techno music then ended it with some 145-160 BM turbo Gabber/Hardstyle shit. Music for me is all about evolving to fit the space/time quota, whilst exploring your own style or sound. Even through I cycle through different genres, I will never cease to play Ballroom/Vogue music, and my love extends to the beautiful Ballroom scene in Australia and New Zealand/Aotearoa."

Alice Agnes is a DJ and producer new to the scene in Wellington. Alice has been playing around the capital over the past year, including slots at the quarry party and Valhalla. Their latest project is building up a new party collective, which you'll hear more about later this year. This mix indulges their love for techno and adjacent music, from deep and dark to ambient and dub.

Azbo and Mlee come through with the heat to round out week one of lockdown. The Auckland-based Azbo is well-known in the NZ scene, as a DJ, promoter, and founder of Wuk It Up. He's also a close friend of the FP crew, and we've been wanting on the show for an age. He throws down a mix of afro and latin jams. After that, we hear from Mlee, a producer, DJ, and founder of the Buenos Aires' based label Vista recordings. Vista Recordings exploration of rave and breakbeat is four releases deep, and they have a new 12" from Tobey due in April. In celebration, Mlee gifts us a frenetic mix of label talent and like-minded faves.

First up, we hear from King Mutapa, a rising star of the deep house scene whose crunchy samples and dusty drums can be heard on his new release for Minneapolis label Open Sound. After that, we are joined by the one-and-only Portable aka Bodycode. Portable recently released his sixth album on his own KhoiKhoi imprint, which follows a plethora of compelling work for labels like Dial, !K7, and Spectral Sound. It's a deep show. Dig in.

Deon's musical roots stem from the crates of his father, a long-time DJ who kicked off in the early 80s. Deon takes inspiration from many different genres and eras, with his breadth showcased through this live recording from Christmas Nite @ UFO Factory in Detroit, at a party hosted by Isaac Prieto, where he opened up for Norm Talley. This time around, we get into it with Mela Melania. Mela Melania is a Honduran-born, Vancouver-based DJ and graphic designer. She has quickly become one of the most exciting DJs out of Canada, whether solo or with the Mood Hut crew. Her raw and hypnotic radio shows via No Fun, NTS, and The Lot are must-listens too. She takes over with an eclectic mix of 80s sounds and moody synths, which progresses from slow burners to driving delights. Simon plays some ragged stuff to close.

This time on FPR, we're joined by two all time faves of the FP camp - Stefan Ringer and Casino Times.

Casino Times is the project of UK producers Joseph Spencer & Nicholas Church. The duo have released a broad swathe of dance music via labels like Futureboogie, Permanent Vacation, Omena Records & Wolf Music. They're also behind the white label Casino Edits series, which released the fifth edition last month. Their next release is due on Cimmerii’s ‘Universal Language‘ label this spring, featuring two original tracks that explore the frustrations of communication in a digital age. They threw us a mix that just bumps.

After that, it is time for Stefan Ringer. Stefan, fka REKchampa, is a DJ and producer from Atlanta, Georgia. Since he started releasing music in 2010, he has built up a wild discography on NDATL, PPU, Argot, and his own imprint FWM Entertainment. He is an influential force in Atlanta’s dance community, with a residence at the Sound Table with Ash Lauryn, and his own monthly party called Kudzu. Stefan is one of the most sound people around, and this mix is absolutely one for the books.

@rosebonica's latest Mouthful of Concrete EP memorialises a time she faceplanted while skateboarding, and stood up with a face full of blood and tears. It's an image which matches the Cape Town producer's music — jagged, colourful, and in your face. We're so stoked to have the @wetdreamsrecordings boss take over the first half to introduce us to this world of hers.

After that, we hear from Mr. Sinclair (@mrsinco). The Perth native founded @goodcoperth, released debuts from @roza-terenzi, @phil-stroud, and Hugo Gerani, set up record store Highgate Intercontinental, and toured basically everyone we listen to at FP HQ through WA. Mr. Sinclair has recently set up in Auckland, where he is focusing on his own productions, as well as continuing to champion the West Coast underground. He breaks the heat in the second hour.
