What’s up, everybody?! It’s another brewery day today, where Alex and Ryan visit the Van Nuys brewery, Macleod Ale Brewing Company. Started by Jennifer and Alastair Boase, Macleod Ale Brewing Company has an extremely prominent Scottish feel. You’ll often catch patrons sitting on the bar stool with a traditional Scottish kilt on, sipping one of Macleod’s infamous Cask Ales. Jennifer is the Pipe Major of the Pasadena Scottish Pipes, so you’ll often hear the sounds of bagpipes floating through the fermenters. Bagpipes, kilts, and delicious cask ales all make for an incredible cultural experience. During the podcast, we’ll be trying Lost in London Oatmeal Stout, which has notes of coffee, dark chocolate, and toasted bread.

EVENT: Kriekfest

WHERE: Hood River Waterfront Park in Hood River, Oregon

WHEN: Saturday, October 11 from 11 am to 7 pm

WHAT: This festival is to recognize the uniqueness of Kriek Lambic style beers. This being a Belgian style of beer, made by fermenting lambic with sour Morello cherries. This is the 3rd annual Kriekfest and for only 40 bucks, you get 25 drink tickets, while 25 bucks will get you only 8 tickets. The choice is pretty damn obvious. Tickets will be available at the gate, 45 dollars for 18 drink tickets. Oh, minors and designated drivers get in for free. Be sure to check it out!

Happy Monday, all! This is a very exciting episode, because it is our first Brewery Interview!! Ryan and Alex sat down with Linda & Shawn Henson from Henson Brewing Company. Henson is a new brewery in the craft beer scene opening back in February of 2018. Located near the Burbank Airport, Henson is known primarily for their incredible English Ales. They also host a variety of events from trivia, to Jazz Music, Yoga, and stand up comedy, so be sure to check them out! During the episode, we’re trying their Pale Ale called Paleolithic (you know we love our puns!). Paleolithic has a nice balance between hoppiness, and maltiness. This easily drinkable brew is meant for everyone, not just for the beer enthusiast. Easily crushable, with a nice, clean finish.

Happy Monday, everyone! This week, Ryan and Alex try the very delectable Old Chub Scotch Ale by Oskar Blues Brewery. Being known as one of the first craft breweries to can their beer, Oskar Blues has been around since 1997. They began canning their craft beer in 2002 and in 2012, they marketed beer that came in resealable aluminum containers. In 2012, they also expanded and opened a secondary location in North Carolina. Oddly enough, Oskar Blues only packages their beers in cans and kegs, never bottles. They are considered to be the largest craft brewery by volume to avoid the usage of glass bottles. They focus largely on the whole can shtick due to cans holding the freshness of the beer better than the glass, as well as eliminating the harmful effects of light. Old Chub has semi-sweet flavors of cocoa and coffee, with a touch of smoke coming from a dash of beechwood-smoked malt added to the beer.

We’ll also be talking with Award Winning Brewer and Beer Author, Randy Mosher. Randy’s been homebrewing for over 20 years and always likes to push the boundaries of brewing. He’s also the author of a many beer educational books, and we’re very honored and excited that he took a moment to chat with us.

Salutations, everybody! This week, Ryan and Alex try the delightful Allagash White by Allagash Brewing Company. Allagash was started in Portland, Maine, in 1995 as a small, one man brewing company by founder Rob Todd. Todd was familiar with the brewing scene, and realized there was a gap that needed to be filled in the craft brewing scene - while there were plenty of German and British style brews, the beer world was missing real craft Belgian style beers. Rob Todd decided he was just the man to fill that gap and began brewing the first batch of Allagash White, releasing it for distribution in 1995. Since then, Allagash Brewing Co. has grown to become the face of Belgian style beers in the US. Allagash White has tastes of coriander and Curacao Orange Peel, along with the traditional spices you’d expect to taste in a Belgian White.

We’ll also be calling the very talented makeup artist, Paulie Jutras, who’s worked in film, theater, and was recently a finalist in the NYX Face Awards. He’s currently blowing up on Instagram, having perfected the looks of The Mad Hatter, Ursula from The Little Mermaid, and Scar from the Lion King, just to name a few.

This includes a tasting glass and 8 drink tickets. Additional drink tickets are 4 for 5 dollars. Each ticket is worth about a 4 ounce pour. Welcome back everybody! Alex and Ryan start season three off right with Pliny the Elder by Russian River Brewing Company. RRBC was founded when Korbel Champagne Cellars, a winery located in the Russian River Valley area of Sonoma County, decided to try brewing beer. Vinnie Cilurzo was hired as the brewmaster, and used brettanomyces, a special type of yeast, to brew sour beers in wine barrels in 1999. In 2002, Korbel decided to sell the brewery to Cilurzo and his wife, who eventually moved the brewery to Santa Rosa, CA. Cilurzo is one of the most innovative microbrewers in the country, and is credited with inventing the Double India Pale Ale, also known as the Imperial IPA, when he was the head brewer at Blind Pig Brewing Company in Temecula. Pliny the Elder is slightly bitter with tastes of malt and hops, and has a fresh hop aroma of floral, citrus, and pine.

And now, in 2018 Stillwater Artisanal still stands tall. Collaborations Are For Lovers hits you hard with coffee flavor. Following this, mango flavors can be subtly noted while the vanilla notes add a nice sweetness to the drink. All these flavors coming together do a great job of hiding the high 16% ABV.

Hey all! This week Ryan and Alex try the interesting Watermelon Funk by 21st Amendment Brewery. In 2000, Nico Frexxia and Shaun O’Sullivan founded the 21st Amendment Brewery in San Francisco’s historic South Park neighborhood. They met in 1995, having moved to the Bay Area from Southern California, and gave up their careers to enter the booming brewery scene. At a brewing course at UC Davis, the two became friends, and 21st Amendment Brewery was born. (Yay!) Having features that are very “un-sour” like, Watermelon Funk sour ale feels very light. The watermelon flavor is very subtle while the tartness of the brew is much more noticeable. There is also a notable wheat flavor to the beer.

We’ll also be calling comedian and author, Steve Hofstetter. Known primarily for his comebacks and masterful way he handles hecklers, Steve just released his first book, Ginger Kid, a memoir about his time in adolescence and the lessons he learned outside the classroom.

With some characteristics of a hazy IPA, Hashtag 710 hits you first with aromes of citrus. The flavor is resiny and citrusy, and ends with an herbal dankness.

Salutations everyone! This week, Ryan and Alex try the very interesting Shower Beer by Solarc Brewing. After a few years of homebrewing and experimenting, Saul Alpert-Abrams and Archie Carey founded Solarc Brewing in 2015. Solarc’s founders focused largely on the creativity that went into brewing medieval beers, resulting in Solarc’s heavy emphasis on “gruit,” a hopless beer that uses traditional and unique ingredients as bittering agents. Although their home base is in Highland Park, they rent space in multiple breweries around Los Angeles experimenting with different methods until they find a more permanent space for Solarc. Shower Beer like none other that you’ve ever tasted. This blonde ale has flavors of smoked tea, followed by a milky sweetness. The aroma of coffee is a lot stronger than the taste of it, but the flavor is still there. It’s weird, and we love it!
