The McWilliams family roots, in the small town of Navan, go back 6 generations. A proud family name that continues to be a staple in the community and has a rich history with the local rural Ottawa fire department.

Today Jared speaks candidly about his views on why he joined and what being a fire fighter is like in a small town.

This episode will give you an insight of what we can expect the future of rural firefighters will be. Honest, hard working community driven people who understand the value of family, friendship and a burning commitment to making their department thrive in the coming decades.

Today you will meet Serge Langlois. In this episode he talks about his experience in the military, how joining a rural Fire station helped him with PTSD, his opinions on leadership, training, Family, and since being retired as an active member of the fire service, how he misses it when he hears the trucks responding to calls.

Not only is Serge a well-respected member of the fire community, is also a viewed by many as a hero for his service to our country…. I’m sure he when he hears this intro, he will disagree with the hero part. He is humble, loyal, honourable, and Both Brandon and I are proud to call him our friend.

He explains just how he manages a work life balance with the support of his incredible wife and 3 wonderful kids. He is a highly respected business owner in his community and has managed to pursue physical fitness at a level most people would only dream of. He is a continually sought-after coach when he’s not building incredible one of a kind custom homes for his clients.

So here is the question, HOW DOES HE DO IT ALL? How does he manage all that, and still find time get promoted to Captain and serve his community?

Today we interview Retired Capt. Paul Carrier.

Paul is a no-nonsense firefighter from back in the day.

His story starts in the mid 80’s. Let’s just say thing were very different back then.

If you enjoy listening to Salt of the earth firefighters tell it as they see it, then you will certainly enjoy this episode.

He has been a firefighter, Officer, as well as an acting Sector Chief.

He is respected by his peers throughout his district for his commitment to service, passion for firefighting, but most notably for his training acumen.

When the city paid for 2 hours of training, they got their moneys worth. Paul would call a start to the training night, get organized and set up…. And only when they were ready to train would he start the clock. It was not uncommon to spend almost double the time allotment each training night because he believed the community deserved only the best his firefighter could provide.

He is also the voice behind what is known as “The Pager Speech”. It has become a tradition that each recruit to the station hears it, so they understood, it may be a pager they get to wear, but, they are being given Trust. Trust by the community the served, so that when someone calls 911, that recruit utterly understands the seriousness of that trust.
