When we’re growing through life we learn the importance of intelligence and know-how. We value experience because with it we believe it increases a person's knowledge base. We also are groomed to believe that emotion and intelligence are mutually exclusive, meaning they cannot exist together at the same time. For example, the patriarchal misogynistic thought that women make horrible leaders because they’re incapable of managing their emotions especially if on their period. However, what has become increasingly popular in recent years is the concept of Emotional Intelligence. Leading researchers on the topic Peter Salovey and John Mayer define emotional intelligence as the ability to recognize and understand emotions in oneself and others. It involves using this emotional understanding to make decisions, solve problems and communicate effectively. Today we’re going to talk about the value of emotional intelligence and how it can make you a better employee and leader.

A closed mouth doesn’t get fed. We’ve all heard that saying or something similar. It’s no less true in corporate America. There are so many reasons we don’t speak up in meetings, but whatever the reason just know you are not alone. Many of us have left a meeting without sharing an idea or hung up a call contemplating all the things we should have said. So today, let’s tackle how to practice speaking up in meetings.

Forgiveness is a process where someone who has been wronged chooses to let go of their resentment, and treat the wrongdoer with compassion.
Forgiveness does not mean forgetting or condoning the wrongdoing, granting legal mercy, or reconciling a relationship. You can forgive a person while in no way believing that their actions were acceptable or justified. On the other hand, simply saying the words “I forgive you”, or accepting an apology, is not forgiveness. In fact, forgiveness can occur without ever speaking to the wrongdoer. Forgiveness is an emotional change that occurs within the person who has been wronged.

The world is changing and we have been growing right along with it. Black women are leading the way in entrepreneurship, but have also increased in numbers as gun owners. Today we introduce our listeners to Marchelle of My Sister’s Keeper Defense who turned her experience and skills into a business of supporting women in their journey of self defense.
Marchelle aka “Tig” Davis, is owner of My Sister’s Keeper Defense (formerly known as Trigger Happy Firearm Instruction). She’s a Florida native and current resident of Atlanta, Georgia. She is also the owner and founder of Iron Sharpens Iron and National Range Day. Marchelle started My Sister’s Keeper Defense in 2016 after noticing a lack of representation in the gun community. Her firearms background stems from the military. Marchelle was in the Army National Guard for seven years and became a firearms instructor when she left the military. She fell in love with teaching firearms classes while working at a local Atlanta gun range. Her goal is to effectively teach a million women how to defend themselves with firearms and eventually open her own gun range. As a domestic abuse and sexual assault survivor, Marchelle think’s it's important that women feel like they're in control of their safety. My Sister’s Keeper Defense is here to empower women and make sure that no one else becomes a victim.

A recurring theme that has come up around black women lately is the pressure to always be on. The phrase “always on” means something is always active, operating or powered. In technology it refers to things that are expected to have continuous connection or be consistently accessible. In human terms, always being on is too tiring to even think about. However, in our day to day lives that is how some of us operate. Always on in some capacity when in mixed company and corporate spaces. Our minds are full of what to say, what not to say, how to say it, how we’ll be perceived, is it a stereotype etc. That constant flow of thought coupled with stressful or even hostile situations can lead to blow ups, break downs and other out of character actions when you least expect it. So today, we want to give you some tips on how to maintain your poise under pressure.
