Fusion Youth Service - 16.03.2025 - After looking at Jesus ancestry in Matthew and Luke, this morning we looked at Jesus origin, as described in the opening few verses of John's gospel. In those glorious few verses, Jesus is presented as eternal and divine, and as the creator of the world. It's pretty cool. Along the way, we discussed the discovery that this world had a beginning - that it's not eternal, in the way that most scientists and philosophers assumed for the past thousand years. We also discovered some math, hidden away in the opening verse of the Bible and the opening verse of John, which connects them in a very strange and surprising way. Finally, we look at the amazing parallel between the way that Jesus is presented in the four gospels, and the four ways that he is described as the Branch in the Old Testament.

Was it really possible for Luke to give Jesus' genealogy going all the way back to Adam (and God)? Why does Matthew include women in his genealogy? In Jeremiah, God pronounced a blood curse on Jeconiah, David's descendant - what do you do with that? And why are the genealogies in Matthew and Luke completely different after David?

Fusion Youth Service - 24.11.2024 - Every year of Jesus' childhood, he and his family travelled to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. But when he was twelve, something unusual happened - something that Mary thought was worth remembering, and that she presumably shared with Luke. That year, Jesus was left behind in Jerusalem. And when His parents eventually found Him, He said something that shocked them - something that no one had ever said before! He called God His Father.

In our last lesson for the year, we explore that peculiar story.

Fusion Youth Service - 17.11.2024 - This week we finished Matthew 2, and Luke's record of Jesus' youngest years. We explore a bit of the history involved in these verses - about Herod's death, and the sons who replaced him. We also investigate another of Matthew's interesting prophetic claims. According to Matthew, the Old Testament prophesied that Jesus would be called a Nazarene. But the town of Nazareth does not exist in the Old Testament. So what is he talking about?

We also finished a bit early this week, which meant there was time for some questions!

1. How can Old Testament people access heaven if the Law is impossible to keep?

2. If God can do anything, does that mean He can sin if He wants to?

3. If Jesus looked like a regular Jew, how was He recognised as the Messiah, even as a child?

4. Does reincarnation exist in the New Testament?

Fusion Youth Service - 10.11.2024 - This morning, we dig into the interesting prophecy that Matthew quotes in Matthew 2:17-18. Matthew is referencing a verse in Jeremiah 31, which in turn references the events surrounding Rachel's death, back in Genesis 35. While these two stories share some things in common, there are also some subtle differences that allow them to be prophetic of Jesus. It's an unusual, but very cool prophecy, which speaks to the truth of Jesus' claim - that all of the Scriptures testify about Him (John 5:39).

We look at the way this night unfolded, which may have been far more dramatic than we usually imagine. We see the amazing way that God provided for Mary and Joseph's unplanned and unexpected trip to Egypt, and discuss the encouragement that can be to us. We also spend a while discussing the supposed prophecy that this journey fulfilled. How is a conversation about Israel prophetic of Jesus?

We spend a while looking at Micah 5:2, and the interesting origin story of this coming king, as well as the prophecy hidden in the name of the town where he was born. We also discussed the (prophetic) significance of three gifts that were given to Jesus. And, with Herod as inspiration, we spend a while talking about the danger of lying. Who's language do you speak? The language of Satan, or the language of Jesus?
