FYW 177 : French homonyms (4): air, aire (and more!)
When two words have a different meaning even though they sound alike or have the same spelling, they are called homonyms. In today’s episode, find out the different meanings of the words pronounced [ɛr]

Air (nm) = air, atmosphere
Respirer l’air pur de la montagne
air (nm) = tune
Je ne me rappelle plus l’air de cette chanson ! = I can’t remember the tune to that song anymore!
air (nm) = air, appearance
Son air arrogant m’irrite! = I find his arrogant air irritating!
un air de famille = a family resemblance, family likeness
Il/Elle a l’air fatigué = He/She looks tired
à l’air (adj) = looking
Cette vieille dame a l’air triste = This old lady looks sad
C’est une vieille femme à l’air triste = It’s a sad-looking woman
à l’air (non couvert) = bare
Il est interdit d’aller en classe le nombril à l’air
à l’air libre = in the open air, outdoors
aire nf = area, zone
une aire de jeux = a play area, a playground
une aire de repos = a rest area
aire = (Geometry) area
Calculer l’aire d’un triangle.
Une aire = nest (of bird of prey)
Aire = form of verb “airer” = to nest
Errer = to wander aimlessly, to roam
Aérer = to air, to ventilate
