This week we’re joined by Garrett Clevinger of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency to tell us about their successful elk restoration project. It’s an example of conservation, cooperation and hard work. Garrett tells the story of how they identified a region that was ideal habitat, worked with other agencies to acquire some breeding stock to release and how it’s grown into a population that’s now allowing limited hunts. We learn of the ongoing research that his group is conducting with elk calves plus he explains how to apply for chance to hunt. It’s a great conservation story. Listen, Learn and Enjoy.

This week, we get down in the weeds with Brian Johnson, a.k.a. @anatomyhunter, to better understand why we sometimes lose whitetails after what seems like a perfect shot. There’s a lot at play here, and Brian is on a mission to help hunters gain deeper insight. As a former taxidermist and wildlife sculptor, Brian has a keen eye for detail—and he’s applied that precision to studying the internal placement of vital organs in relation to the angles from which hunters take their shots. We learned a ton. Brian dives into topics like the infamous “no-man’s-land,” lack of a blood trail, and whether a deer can survive on one lung? Which side of the deer offers the best angle at the liver? Many animals are lost each season, and Brian’s life mission is to help hunters recover more of them. It’s a fascinating discussion. Listen, learn, enjoy

This week, we’re joined by Capt. David Stiller and Capt. Lew Childre, who share the incredible story of the giant bull shark they recently caught in the coastal waters of Alabama. David Stiller’s story is nothing short of amazing—he’s a real-life Quint from Jaws. Lew Childre, a seasoned shark fisherman himself, adds color and insight to the tale. We also dive into the techniques of shark fishing with long lines, baited buoys, and some of the legal considerations involved. Listen, learn, and enjoy.

This week, we’re joined by Claude Strother of Wilcox County, Alabama—a seasoned turkey hunter who was recently attacked by a bobcat during a hunt. The story itself is fascinating, but there is much more to the man than that incident. He is a serious turkey hunter who has kept records of the 247 turkeys he has killed and the more than 70 he has called up for others. He has witnessed the wild turkey population grow from very few to where it is today. We ask him a lot of questions, but it’s about more than just the scary bobcat attack. In the end, it’s about a man staring into an uncertain future and holding on dearly to what he loves most. Listen, learn, and enjoy.

This week we’re joined by our good friend, Dr. Marcus Lashley, a.k.a. @drdisturbance, from the University of Florida to discuss the beginnings and future of a recent study involving Osceola subspecies turkey poults. His team incubated wild turkey eggs from nests that were unfortunately abandoned in their wild setting, hatched them, and will be collecting all sorts of data while the little miracles live and grow inside very large enclosures on the UF campus. It branches into a wider research discussion where we learn how they capture and band and the importance of the Florida Corridor. Listen, Learn and Enjoy.

This week we’re joined in studio by spraying experts Twinky Estes and Bryson Whitmon of Nutrien Ag Solutions. We thoroughly discuss the benefits and techniques of sprayer calibration and the nuances of spraying effectively. There are so many benefits to spraying but so many confusing questions. We ask about calibrating the sprayer, boomless vs. booms, how to mix, cleaning the tank, water pH, speed of spraying, gallons per acre and per minute, safety, when to spray and much more. If your managing a property and considering using herbicides you’ll find this one very informative.
Listen, Learn, Enjoy.
Determine Nozzle Spacing in inches
Ex. 25ft spray pattern boomless nozzle is 300”. Most boom sprayers are 20” nozzle spacing Determine you MPH (Miles Per Hour) you’re going to apply at. Catch water for 15 seconds. Take those fluid ounces x 4 to get ounces per minutes. Divide ounces per minutes by 128 to get GPM (Gallons per Minute)
GPA = GPM x 5940 / MPH x Width

This week we’re joined by Dr. Colter Chitwood of Oklahoma State University and his grad assistant Cyrena Bedoian to learn about their poult research project. It’s an amazing story as his team has actually been capturing young day old poults and sewing small transponders on their backs to track their movements and survivability. They explain what they have been able to learn from monitoring both adults and poults. We were amazed at how they actually caught the poults. Listen, Learn and Enjoy.
