The Bible teaches in three ways, commands, implication and examples. In this sermon Gary takes us through 1 Corinthians. The Church in Corinth had many moral problems not unlike our problems today. Through inspiration Paul points out their sins and tells them what to do about it. He reminds them that they are to be separate from the world and shows them that faithfulness is the way to ultimate salvation. Any procedure, organization or structure has a due order or it falls apart. Gary McDade was in the Navy in the Vietnam era and his good friend John Shannon (See a link to his YouTube channel below) was in the army. They understand what orders are and together brought their military viewpoint and expertise to this lesson. To follow the due order implies that no part of the order is omitted or substituted. Every Church has due orders that are found in their creeds, confessions of faith or its leadership. If a person or particular congregation associated with a group stops following the due order they may be expelled from the group. The Church of Christ is no different. Its due order is necessarily found in the New Testament. The Church of Christ is the Church of New Testament. If any of its congregations cease to follow the due order--the New Testament--then it ceases to be associated with the New Testament Church--Church of Christ. Adding to or taking away from the Bible is condemned by the Bible yet every denominational Church does just that (Deut. 4:2; Pbs. 30:6; Rev. 22:18-19; James Boyd of Bryan College). It makes sense that followers of Christ be called Christians. As the old time preacher said, "without Christ I ain't nothing"! Isaiah prophesied that God's people would be called by a new name (Isa. 62). This was fulfilled in Acts 11:26 when, "the disciples were called Christians first at Antioch." Gary McDade presents several characteristics of Christians the most obvious of which is that they "come to Christ". As Jesus began his famous Sermon on the Mount he sat down, as teachers used to do and his disciples came to him and he taught them. Jesus said, "And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself" (John 12:32). Revelation 7:9 shows a picture of people from every nations praising Christ. Philippians chapter two says that every knee would bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of the father. This latter verse refers to everyone voluntarily confessing him, even those who are in rebellion against him. It will be undeniable to all that Jesus is Lord whether or not you follow him. The conquered ones may deny the superiority of their conqueror(s) but in that day everyone will acknowledge that Christ is Lord. Gary begins with the background not only of Cyprus but also Paul and his conversion to Christ. Do you think Paul's conversion was sincere and authentic? Do you believe he became saved based on his situation and actions? If so, do you think we can be saved in the same way he was saved? Not that Jesus will blind anyone with a bright light while traveling but rather, what was it that saved him and when was he considered in a saved state? Was he saved by grace only or faith only? This episode continues the topic of how and why the Church of Christ is different. Gary begins in Colossians 1:18 and explains the significance of the word "preiminence". He shows that Christ is the head of the Church and not any other person. Gary goes on to discuss differences between specific denominations and Pastors he has had discussions with and shows that they are following the doctrine of their denominations oversight or else positions they hold that are clearly Bible contradictions. There is really no surprise that this occurs. A prominent position held by many is that every denomination removes and/or adds verses to the Bible so they can teach their own brand of Christianity. Though not surprising it is appalling! It is no casual thing to delete or add to God's Word. Would you agree? If it is o.k. then one passage one would have to remove is Revelation 22:18-19. This passage condemns anyone who adds to or takes away from the Bible! Let that not be us! It is clear that life is full of suffering. Rather than eliminate sacrifice and suffering Christianity enjoins it upon Christians. In addition to suffering, sacrifices are required of Christians. Why then become a Christian? Because suffering as a Christian will be rewarded highly. May this encouraging sermon edify you as realize the inevitability of suffering and learn the joy that awaits beyond its grasp while gaining strength needed to endure it. Peter wrote:
