This week on Inside the Headset we speak with TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson. We discuss how he and his staff work to project and develop talent in student-athletes, as well as the importance of being yourself as a coach.
Coach Patterson's career began as a graduate assistant at Kansas State in 1982 after he finished his playing days for the Wildcats. He went on to serve as the linebackers coach at Tennessee Tech (1983-1984) and UC Davis (1986) before becoming the defensive coordinator at Cal Lutheran (1987). Coach Patterson also spent time at Pittsburg (KS) State working with the linebackers, was the defensive coordinator for Sonoma (CA) State (1989-1991), and coached in the secondary at Utah State (1992-1994) and Navy (1995). In 1996, Patterson was named defensive coordinator and safeties coach at New Mexico. He arrived at TCU in 1998 as the defensive coordinator, and after leading the defensive unit for three seasons, Patterson was named head coach prior to the Horned Frogs' bowl game in 2000 and heads into his 19th season leading the program. Coach Patterson is a two-time recipient of the AFCA Coach of the Year Award (2009, 2014), and he is the winningest coach in TCU's history.
