Sweet and Kind
Regina Puckett is an American author, raised in Tennessee. She writes romance, inspiration short stories, and this delightful anthology of poetry. AN OPENED HEART allows you to open the book anywhere and find a poem with strong imagery and a cozy, heart-warming theme. "Life and Death's Daily Visit"--Powerful rivers pool around my feet/Where life and death regularly meet/A hint each second should be treasured." Good reminder to all of us.
There are poems about love and poems about writing, poems about angels, even treachery among friends.
Her title poem is my favorite,
Splayed and opened widee
No longer able to protect or hide
This opened heart lies without its shield
Waiting for love to submit and yield.
This anthology will be a boon to people of all ages, in all states of mind. I gave four stars only because rhymed poetry becomes hard to read and enjoy in a book. It jangles here and there. But still, a lovely effort from a lovely lady.
"A Story in Each Poem"
Author Regina Puckett is a very unique author. She writes short stories of love, romance, children's books, and my favorite: horror stories. "An Opened Heart" is a compilation of very short poems to savor. They apply to all aspects of emotions and dreams and are worth reading repeatedly. "Thankful" is akin to a prayer we all make from time to time. "Kiss the Babies" is a poetic political rant we all know is true. In all, there are 21 poems to entice the reader to relax for a few moments to appreciate the wonderful scent of a beautiful rose. Worth reading at bedtime, over and over again.
Life Experience Transcends Circumstance and Transfigures into Wisdom
The pages of "An Opened Heart" display a wide array of emotion; as if Regina Puckett's life experience transcends circumstance and transfigures into wisdom. The poems are short but dynamic and sound in structure; at the end of each one, I am provoked to thought, to wonder, and to inquire of the next piece what additional knowledge can be gained.
From the moment I first started reading, I knew I was going to be a fan of Regina Puckett; in her acknowledgements, she recognizes her family, friends, and even foes as those who inspire her to set her goals higher; I enjoyed reading this as a precedent for the rest of the book.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in structured poetry.
