    Title: Purple Cane Road
Subtitle: A Dave Robicheaux Novel, Book 11
    Author: James Lee Burke
    Narrator: Nick Sullivan
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-26-12
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 237 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Dave Robicheaux has spent his life confronting the age-old adage that the sins of the father pass on to the son. But what was his mother's legacy? Dead to him since his youth, Mae Guillory has been shuttered away in the deep recesses of Robicheaux's mind. He's lived with the fact that he would never really know what happened to the woman who left him to the devices of a whiskey-driven father. But deep down, Dave still feels the loss of his mother and knows that the infinite series of disappointments in her life could not have come to a good end.
While helping out an old friend, Dave is stunned when a pimp looks at him sideways and asks if he is the son of Mae Guillory, the whore a bunch of cops murdered 30 years ago. Her body was dumped in the bayou bordering Purple Cane Road, and the cops who left her there are still on the job.
Dave's search for his mother's killers leads him to the darker places in his past, and solving this case teaches him what it means to be his mother's son. Purple Cane Road has the dimensions of a classic - passion, murder, and nearly heartbreaking poignancy - wrapped in a wonderfully executed plot that surprises from start to finish.

    Too bad about narration
I've read all Burke's Robicheaux books so far, and in order. First: narration. Will Patton read the first two, then Mark Hammer took over. At first I didn't like Hammer after the nearly pitch-perfect Patton, but by the 4th book, I realized how good he was. The one thing that makes Hammer not work for me, however, is that there is no getting around the fact that he sounds too old for Robicheaux. And for the women who are hard to distinguish from the men. Now we have Nick Sullivan. He has a pleasant voice and I'm sure he does well on other books, but he is not the reader for this series. And really, how is it our Dave the Cajun, Bootsie, Alafair and Clete don't have ANY accents, but everyone Else has some kind of southern-ish accent? I'm looking forward to Mark Hammer again, and then yes! Will Patton.
As for the books themselves, they deserve a very close listen. I needed something easy but good to 'read' while working on this fixer-upper we have. I'd heard about Burke for years, so I started with Neon Rain--not at all my favorite. But I kept going. And soon came to realize how much texture and complexity is in each book and how VERY much I enjoyed the little background and contextual jewels which are such great insights into the Bayou/Southern culture. Burke has a remarkable touch with this technique of building a story. Even though he could have used a better editor on this series (too much "protean", "fecund", "ceramic or porcelain", "gibbous", "come/came a borning", and skin-around-eyes-tightening, et al), I never got tired of listening to the rich, descriptive prose--especially as a context for the tightly wound, taciturn protagonist. I also love the moments of humor tucked so subtly into the writing.
There are other flaws. Any male worth his salt in this series is a Vietnam Vet, sometimes the "damaged warrior" gets a bit overdone, there has not been one female role so far which excited me, and sometimes I want to slap Dave upside the head. Last criticism.

An intriguing Tale with the Amish angle prominent.
Most of us approach a new Author & Narrator with a deal of trepidation but I can honestly say that I have thoroughly enjoyed all four of the books in this series.
The development of the lead characters over the course of the 4 books is subtle & gradual. This book has a good story which brings in the Amish setting in a surprising manner.
The narration is excellent and even though the main male character is quite gruff, Kathleen McInerney has developed a voice for him which conveys his troubled background admirably.
Altogether a most enjoyable read & series.
    Captivating Series

    Title: The Dreadful Lemon Sky
Subtitle: A Travis McGee Novel, Book 16
    Author: John D. MacDonald
    Narrator: Robert Petkoff
    Format: Unabridged

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Hero of The Dreadful Lemon Sky is Travis McGee, a man of universal interest and independent means who lives on an old houseboat he won in a poker game. One evening a young woman shows up with a suitcase full of cash. McGee agrees to be bagman. She tells him what to do if she doesn't return. When she doesn't, McGee is left alone to deal with an intrigue that involves drugs, fear, passion, and death.

    Florida; Oh Florida
McGee and Meyer head north to find out who killed a woman who came to Travis for help. Trav and Carrie Milligan once had a one night stand and it cemented an aura of trust. Carrie tells him if she can't get back for the money to give it to her sister Susan and not to worry about finding out the reason she didn't get back. Well we both know that McGee and Meyer can't do that so they unhook the lines and head north to Bayside. On the way up someone takes a shot at them in McGee's boat The Busted Flush. Upon arriving at the marina before they've even had the chance to check in; the behemoth who owns and runs the marina assaults both his wife and McGee. As the dynamic duo endeavor to locate Carrie's killer more people die; her sister Susan is sorta, kinda, maybe raped; at least that's MacDonald's 1974 definition of sexual assault. I won't go into specifics about anymore of the books main events in order to avoid spoilage. This is a good solid Travis McGee mystery; I rate it in the top half if not the third of the series.
McGee gets back on his swaybacked steed again
If you could sum up The Dreadful Lemon Sky in three words, what would they be?
    desperate poignant saddening
What did you like best about this story?
McGee is not a superhero, nor a secret agent. He is merely a man of slightly above average size and intellect, gifted with excellent reflexes and a changeable manner. Smooth operator comes to mind, but that doesn't fit, either. McGee struggles to understand what is going on himself, while the story unfolds, he is as lost as the reader and it shows.
What about Robert Petkoffs performance did you like?
    He was great
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
I've no idea how to draft a tag line...
    Great
Liked it all, could use less 'dears' and 'darlings'. Makes the relationships sound superficial, a bit sugary.
Grabbed my Attention on First Page
Would you listen to The Dreadful Lemon Sky again? Why?
    No.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
    Sort of.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Sorry. Can't bring one to mind.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    Not that kind of book.
    Any additional comments?
This is the kind of book I listen to while walking my dog. If I miss a bit of it, doesn't seem to matter. Keeps me interested but not really involved. Sort of like TV.

    Title: Deadlock
    Subtitle: A V.I. Warshawski Mystery, Book 2
    Author: Sara Paretsky
    Narrator: Susan Ericksen
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 143 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Deadlock, V. I. Warshawskis second case, involves the huge Great Lakes shipping industry. Once again the subject is murder - this time the accidental death of Boom-Boom Warshawski, an ex-hockey star and V. I.s beloved cousin, who fell - or was pushed - off a rain-slicked pier on Chicagos busy waterfront.
Convinced that Boom-Boom was in fact killed because of information he had uncovered about criminal doings on the shipping lines, V. I. begins a long and frustrating search for her cousins murderer. In the course of an investigation that takes her to a remote Canadian port city and a calamitous trip on a sabotaged freighter, V. I. finds all too many possible candidates for the killer, including a grain company executive involved in extortion; and rival heads of two shippers, one of whom is being blackmailed for his criminal past; a hockey player whose specialty is graft; and Boom-Booms lover, an icily beautiful dancer with expensive tastes in men and merchandise.

    Loving V.I.
Book 2 is just as good as book one. Your attention is riveted by everyone in the story. Having just found these books so many years after they were written, they seem to have modern issues that are relevant today. Hope to keep reading all the V.I. series.
    Susan Ericksen does it again!
Would you listen to Deadlock again? Why?
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves the female hero with mystery and a great story that is easy to follow.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The interesting part of this story is about all the danger that VI gets herself into; and then how she gets out of it.
Which character as performed by Susan Ericksen was your favorite?
My favorite character, performed by Susan Ericksen, was VI's best friend Lotty.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I would read this in one setting.
HUGE Boo-boo Mars an Otherwise Excellent Book
Susan Ericksen is an excellent audiobook performer. In this performance, however, she makes a HUGE mistake. It's one that the session engineer, together with any overseers, REALLY should have caught BEFORE the recording was finalized. What's the HUGE mistake? One of the characters in this book is a French-Canadian (Quebecois, to be specific) hockey player. When Ms. Ericksen voices that character, she uses a quite good FRANCE accent. (I think it's Parisian.) A France-French accent when speaking English is NOTHING like a Canadian-French accent when speaking English, and is ESPECIALLY NOT like a Quebecois accent. Each time that Ms. Ericksen voices the French-Canadian hockey player, her mistake is so jarring, that I am immediately transported OUT OF the world of the story, and into reality. This is really too bad, because Ms. Ericksen does a great job of performing the rest of Deadlock, and so she really immerses the reader into the story. However, her performance of a VERY incorrect accent wrenches out of the world of Deadlock any listener who can tell that the accent is incredibly incorrect. (It is so incorrect that it provokes a laughter response in me, and likely in many others. This REALLY pulls one back to reality.)
When the Quebecois hockey player is not in a scene, the listener is, thankfully, re-immersed in Deadlock's world.
Sara Paretsky is an excellent author, and this book is no exception.

    Publisher's Summary:
It was his first big murder case - and one of the bloodiest and most violent crimes LAPD detective Danny McGuire would ever encounter. Andrew Jakes, an elderly multimillionaire art dealer, had been brutally murdered in his Hollywood home, his lifeless body tied to his naked young wife. Raped and beaten, the lovely Angela Jakes had barely survived the attack herself. Gazing into her deep, soulful eyes, Danny swore that he'd find the psychopath behind this barbarous act. But the investigation didn't turn up a single solid lead, and within days of Angela's release from the hospital, the stunning young widow - Danny's only witness - had vanished.
For ten years Danny McGuire could not forget the sweet face of Angela Jakes and the terrible crime that had shattered her life; his obsession with her nearly cost him his sanity. Now in France, thousands of miles from the past - with a new life, a new job with Interpol, and a ravishing new wife - he's happier than he's ever been... until he meets Andrew Jakes's estranged son, Matt Daley.
Curious about his father's murder, Matt has been digging into the cold caseand made some shocking discoveries. Three killings nearly identical to his father's have taken place across the globe. The victims were elderly, newlywed millionaires, their young wives assaulted. And in each case the widow, the sole beneficiary of the will, donated her newfound wealth to children's charities and then vanished. Could it be true? Had the Jakes killer struck again? If so, Danny knows he must tread carefully or risk losing everything for good.
The evidence points to a single killer - a brilliant and ruthless criminal who travels across the globe under a string of assumed identities, cleverly keeping one step ahead of the law. Joining forces, Danny and Matt pursue this intriguing shadow from Los Angeles to London, New York to Italy and the French Riviera, in a tantalizing game of cat and mouse filled with promising leads and frustrating dead ends. When another murder fitting the profile occurs, Matt heads to Hong Kong, hoping to get answers from the latest widow, Lisa Baring, and perhaps uncover the hard evidence they need.
But Matt becomes besotted with the irresistible beauty, nearly derailing the investigation, and Danny wonders whether Lisa is truly a victim or something more sinister. When a break in the case sends Danny to Mumbai, he knows he must act quickly, for the clever killer is poised to strike again.
A fast-paced story full of mystery, glamour, excitement, and spectacular twists that build to a stunning ending, Sidney Sheldon's Angel of the Dark is quintessential Sheldon from first page to last.

    Very Entertaining
The beginning was a little confusing to me till it all tied together, then this is a can't put down listen. Narrator was excellent as well. It was one of those reads where you can't wait to find out how it turns out and I must say it was pretty far fetched but entertaining none the less. Now if somebody could explain the end to me I would love that, Who is Carlo Hernandez. So if you listen and get something I missed.

    Perfect Authentic 1960's Period Noir
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
John D MacDonald was an extremely prolific writer of mysteries and thrillers during the 50's through the mid 1980's. His popular Travis McGee series always placed a color in the title. Hence the Orange reference here. This story was copyrighted in 1965.
The value of this series is that it is written in its time with spot-on dialog, technology, prices, values, contemporary culture and morals. It was a wild and reckless time that this novel is set in. So essentially you have a master writer creating a novel in his time with a perfect pitch. Contrast this with contemporary writers trying to set crime novels in WWII, the 50's etc. and you get a story told through the prism of a 21st century writer, a big difference. People in the 1960's thought and acted quite differently.
The story is interesting, the characters developed and real. You care about all of them. John MacDonald takes the time to let you get to know the characters are real functioning people with strengths and weaknesses. He sets you down the pathway of the plot and you become an observer. The story reveals itself through logical, clever detection by Travis McGee, a stalwart knight that seeks to redress financial wrongs for a 50% cut of the recovery.
The story is set in the seedy Florida of the 1960's where land scams abounded and the innocent like the alligators were both skinned. This novel is crisply written, the run time on this Audible book is a little over 8 hours, just enough to tell a full story and not too much. The story unfolds fast. A feature of Travis McGee novels is that things work out in the end for the right people. So you find yourself cheering for the mistreated victim and share the redemption at the end. We have a first class villain and a cast of con-men that ring true. I place this series in the pantheon of historic crime masters like Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and Ross MacDonald (no relation) where perfect characters and plots are immortal.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Bright Orange for the Shroud?
It would be unfair to give up too much of the plot, but the search of the villain's property was a classic. McGee has a gift for the theatrical.
What about Robert Petkoffs performance did you like?
Excellent rendition of male and female characters. Good accents and a nice energy level to the reading.

    Couldn't quit listening!
As of this review I am sure I've read over a hundred novels about serial killers. What makes this one stand out is the focus is on a newly formed team of profilers. They are experienced cops, but entirely new to profiling. They are led, however, by a very prominent physcologist who specializes in criminal profiling, Tony Hill.
The integrity of this group is immediately challenged by a police force unimpressed with any use of physcology and this prejudice is continually exacerbated by an extremely manipulative killer. I learned a lot more about profiling than most any other book I've read.
The suspense kept me engrossed throughout the novel.
Even better than the first in the series
    Any additional comments?
A popular TV personality is killing fans revealed right at the start. The cops can't believe the beloved star could possibly do such a thing. Meanwhile, a group of smart cops are brought together to train with profiler Tony Hill and a serial arsonist is at work in detective Carol Jordan's jurisdiction. Everything ties together. An excellent example of the serial killer crime procedural, with subtle commentary on celebrity and gender politics. Bechdel test: pass.
    The narrator is excellent.
    Nice to go back
Where does The Wire in the Blood rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
In the top 15%, If you consider when it was written, it would be a lot higher. It was the first Val Mcdermid book I ever read and has lead to a long and happy succession of others.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Wire in the Blood?
The twists and turns of the plot.
What about Michael Tudor Barness performance did you like?
Does the characters very well, and kept the impetus of the story going.
    Any additional comments?
I do find Dr. Hill's comment very worth a chuckle now and again, sort of a deadpan, grave humor, no pun intended.
I think I get McDermid now: Kate Millet of crime?
but I prefer to get her in print, where I can skim/skip the violent detail. I don't think Wire in the Blood is anywhere close to as gritty as Mermaids Singing (and that goes for the three subsequent in the series that I "read" with text-to speech or Kindle as well) - but I'm still too squeamish to hear a good narrator get into the minds and hands of her killers.

    Ellis and Lena Succeed Again
If you are like me and are a fan of either (or all of) Michael Connely, Robert Crais, TJ Parker, Thomas Perry, Joseph Wambaugh, Robert Ferrigno, Ross Macdonald or Sue Grafton then Robert Ellis and Lina Gamble are for you. Not only has Ellis created a great central character in Lena but he uses the LA/Southern California backdrop as a supporting actor (or shall I say actress) in the tradition of the greats listed above. The plot twists will keep you guessing till the end. This was my first experience with Coleen Marlo and her voice was pleasant and easy to listen to. My only wish was that she would have exhibited a greater range of emotion when the plot situation call for some. I hope you enjoy this listen as much as I did.
    Best of the series
Any twists and turns. A dynamite ending. The best of the Lena Gambill series. I loved this one and highly recommend it.
    Excellent Story
Loved it! This book kept me in suspense until the end. I had no idea who the killer was.
    The BEST of Robert Ellis!
I really really enjoyed this book. It was the best in the "Lena Gamble" series and I hope it's not the last. Coleen Marlo did a great job in her performance for sure. For me the writing style in this book was such that I could really feel "murder season" and why it was happening as well as all the twists and turns of the plots.
Without giving the end away there is one section where the listener may feel that the author is wrapping up the plot and winding down the story line....it is done in a very clever way such that I was lulled into complacency while driving and listening, the speaker speaking rhythmically when a 180 degree turn in the plot is thrown in.....(with 15 min left in a 12 hour book) I sat straight up in the car seat having been slouching after driving for 3 hours. It sure woke me up!
    Shockingly Disapointing
This was a shocking disappointment... it strained credulity beyond any conceivable limit.
I was really disappointed. I guess that's why there are only 3 Lena Gamble books!

To Clare Cosi's surprise, this fall's hottest fashion trend is anything caffeinated - because designer Lottie Harmon, a loyal coffeehouse customer, has just created an ingenious collection of coffee-inspired fashion accessories. So naturally Lottie chooses the Village Blend as the perfect backdrop for fall Fashion Week insiders to view her new line of "Java Jewelry." When barista Tucker unwittingly serves a poisonous latte to a prominent figure on the fashion scene, Clare suspects that the real target may have been Lottie. Now she must protect her thriving business from negative publicity, Lottie from further danger, and Tucker from murder charges - even if it means jolting the fashion world with some shocking secrets.

Fun mystery centered around coffee & Fashion Week!
I really enjoy these coffee shop mysteries because they have the fun of cozies with a greater depth of characterization then most cozies, and they are filled with so many interesting facts about coffee, New York, and whatever subject matter that each book is centered around. In this third in the series, the glamor and competitiveness of the fashion world becomes the center focus.
The Village Blend coffee shop is hosting a party for Fashion Week near Bryant Park. All the rich, famous and beautiful people have come to mingle and drink expertly blended coffee. But when a cup of Clare Cosi's coffee is shared by two men and one drops dead and the other one is rushed to the hospital barely breathing, Clare's friend and favorite barista is arraigned for the murder. Once again Clare and her ex-husband and business partner go to work to prove his innocence. In this book, her rich , French mother-in-law is also enlisted by Clare because of her influence in this fashion world business set.
The fashion world and entrepreneurs of other businesses all become potential suspects making the mystery interesting right up until the final solution. Clare and her family also become more familiar and interesting in every book. This is definitely one of my favorite cozy mystery series!
    good clean mystery
entertaining and clean. I could listen to this with my teenage kids in the car. I know a lot of people were complaining about the amount of time she spends describing coffee, but I enjoyed that and I am not really a coffee drinker.
    Great 'lil mystery!
Nice little story, cute characters. It's a great listen to pass the time with. Great narrator too. I liked it very much!
    Great Series
Would you consider the audio edition of Latte Trouble to be better than the print version?
Haven't read the print version, but I prefer audio books in general.
What does Rebecca Gibel bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Personality of each character is made more real through the narrators voice.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It would be great to have the opportunity to listen to it in one sitting.
    Any additional comments?
Love Cleo Coyles Coffee House series.
    What a Delightful Romp
What made the experience of listening to Latte Trouble the most enjoyable?
I loved the main character of Claire trying to solve a murder mystery, being as she is only a coffee shop owner. Reminds me a lot of Goldie in the Diane Mott Davidson's series. The writing of Cleo Coyle was smooth, fast paced and totally kept my interest.

    Publisher's Summary:
When an Orthodox Jew is found shot to death in Montreal, Temperance Brennan is called in to examine the body and to figure out the puzzling damage to the corpse. Unexpectedly, a stranger slips her a photograph of a skeleton and assures her the picture is the key to the victim's death. Before she knows it, Tempe is involved in an international mystery as old as Jesus, a mystery that could rewrite 2000 years of religious history.
Tempe learns that the stranger's picture shows bones uncovered during an archeological dig. She discovers the Montreal shooting victim ran an import business that might have fronted for the trade of black market antiquities. Along with Detective Andrew Ryan and biblical archeologist Jake Drum, Tempe travels to Israel to probe the origins of the skeleton and the ancient crypt in which it was found.
They make a startling discovery that raises radical questions about Christ's death and places them squarely in the middle of a swirling controversy. Could one of the tombs really be Christ's last resting place? Or, has someone concocted an elaborate hoax?

    struggling to keep listening
If you could sum up Cross Bones in three words, what would they be?
Lots and lots and lots of education and research went into this book. You have to hand it to Kathy - she is indeed a smart cookie and will teach you something new with each book
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
This is, unfortunately, a must better read than a listen. I have been at it for awhile and have to keep going back because I tune out.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Michele Pawk?
Probably not. She sounds angry or perhaps very confused about the characters she is mimicking. She has difficulty giving the characters depth or personality even. I found her attempt to sound like a certain ethnicity just terrible and confusing.
    Shades of Dan Brown
I loved the background info woven into the plot. The conspiracy theories were fascinating. But the ending was firmly grounded in reality and plausibility.
    A case of biblical proportion!
In Cross Bones by Kathy Reichs, Temperance Brennan takes on a case of biblical proportions. A murder in Montreal leads to the discovery of a skeleton nicknamed Max which may prove to be the bones of Jesus. Tempe travels to Israel with Andrew Ryan where the trail leads to a mysterious tomb. A brilliant read and great listen Michele Pawk delivers a polished performance.
    Outlander
Just finished the Outlander series. Love the bones books but they can't compare to them.
starts strong then gets bogged down
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
No. The book started out strong and interesting but mid way through it became like reading Chronicles I (from the bible...all the begats). They kept repeating the lineage and going over mitochondrial DNA specifics.
