This might be one of the best books in the series so far. It's the perfect blend of a ghost story and a very clever mystery. It also has interesting and likable characters. I especially enjoyed Mel's blossoming relationship. This is a great series and I look forward to the next book.

Murder & Mayhem all around

Fun to listen to murder mystery with a tad little bit of romance.Lots of character's,it was a bit hard keeping up with them all but the narrator didn't seem to have any problem with that herself.She did a great job giving each character individuality & personality.The only thing I could be disappointed in was some of the character's in the story weren't accounted for in the end leaving you to wonder what happened to them,like Tom Avery for example.He supposedly to sailed away but to me it didn't sound like something the man would have done.Over all,very cute story with murder & ghosts & lots of curious friends.Would recommend reading for any one at any age.

Sweet book

Enjoyable light hearted story. Although a bit predictable with one little twist. Be sure to read the other books in the series.

My new favorite series

The first two books in the series were good. This one though goes a step ahead in developing characters and the story line. It also sets the premise for Mel to accept her unwanted ability to see ghosts.

The narrator is perfect for the series. She sets the right tone and hits all the right emotional pitches.

Wonderful "logic puzzle"--great listen, great fun!

This was my first Ellery Queen. Loving mysteries, I have long intended to get to these books because they're a significant part of the American contributions during the classic mystery writing period. (This one was originally published in 1929). Being a lover of mysteries from that time, so far as I can tell, this is about as good as it gets.

This is the "fun" kind of mystery--where it is laid out as a pure logic problem for the reader from beginning to end. Clues and suspects are plentiful, but the author has (now looking back on it) been very clever in creating a straightforward mystery that the reader could [theoretically] solve along with them. (Clues are everywhere but few red herrings). Toward the end, the author has an aside to the reader, stating that now, at this point, we know as much as the detectives do--there will be no surprises thrown in at the end--and invites the reader to use their own deductive powers to solve the murder/puzzle. Quite a fun book, really--like a giant cerebral murder puzzle. It's "Clue" on steroids. If you know how to pay attention, you can solve the mystery (but fair warning--it is far from obvious and I won't say if I was smart enough to figure it out :-) .

Richard Queen (the father) is a member of the homicide squad--greatly respected by all his peers and superiors (there's a different idea--modern detective stories so often have the main characters butting up against forces that do not support them--so they become lone wolves). But not here--this is a book with "class". Ellery Queen is the son, who for all practical purposes is not a detective, but a book lover, but father & son are unusually close, and Ellery does a great deal of the "detecting" in the team. The book is written without a single swear word, in fact I would call it "polite" much of the time because it is not meant as a series of shocks, but a series of clues to the reader.

It is peppered with some literary allusions, and the occasional Latin phrase (to point out how erudite the father & son are). I feel the need to just comment on how it has a small amount of what would today be viewed as a sort of political incorrectness--a very few comments by characters left me cringing and sad, but I finally decided that the writing represents mindsets of that era, and I believe the authors would be sensitive enough to present a couple of offhand remarks differently today.

Another great one!

Another great book in the Kathleen Turner series. I rarely feel compelled to read/listen to all the books in a series, one after the other. But that's not the case here. I'm hooked!

Horrid narration of lackluster novel.

I find Angela Dawe's voice irritating like fingernails on a chalk board.

Audible classifies Turning Point as a modern detective novel. It is actually a contemporary romance novel.

I will admit that the blurb is what drew me into the story: the ability to present a murder mystery with a main character who is just the right brand of crazy to be funny, not too obsessed with taking herself or her reputation seriously, and wanting to help her familys financial situation so that saving $3 on cheap toilet tissue is not the driving force to her knowing the aisles at W*****t well enough to walk them in her sleep.

Fairly recently relocated to a small town of Hudson, west of Boston and just inside the Tech Belt in Massachusetts, Maggie and her husband Neil ( a retired Navy SEAL) have found a modest house for they and their two sons to settle in. Decent schools, not quite strapped enough to be house-poor, the opportunity for Maggie to take on some housecleaning jobs in the little neighborhood is a perfect one for extra money. And, with the encouragement of her best friend, she decides to go for it, calling her company The Laundry Hag.

When the wife of her first client is found dead, all eyes turn to him. But, Maggie was enjoying one of several uncomfortable moments with this man with his fascination for torturous devices and their history, and is the alibi that proves he didnt physically kill his wife. But, Maggie (and her best friend Sylvia) have their own ideas and a misguided sense of their own abilities and are determined to unveil the murderer themselves.

Several twists and turns, with an incredibly well-plotted story that kept the killer under wraps until the end, Maggie is delightful and clever, with a knack for seeing herself with brutally honest eyes, and finding the funny. Her relationship with her husband and son are delightfully portrayed and very real, with Neils acceptance of her happy place moves as she stands in her kitchen and just sniffs, to ground herself in the moment and release tension. These two are perfectly matched with his protective abilities and sense, and her own particular brand of crazy that is wholly engaging and utterly devoid of deception or ill will.

Secondary characters are far more than just additions: arriving with an instant impression from Maggie, and then allowed to develop and show themselves as the story continues.

Excellent Shorter Suspense Novel

This relatively short debut novel keeps up a steady suspenseful pace with a well-considered plot, dramatizing wickedly the psyche of female survivors of long-term degrading captivity by a psychopathic rapist. I thought the ramifications of the abuse on the friendship between 2 of the captives was played out well with an unexpected twist.

The novel shows the great promise of bigger and better stories from a new whiz kid on the crime novel block, Koethi Zan. I will definitely look forward to the publication of her next book.

The narrator superbly portrayed the anxiety of long-term rape survivors and enhanced the experience of the novel.

Eerie similarities to Cleveland kidnappings...

The Never List chronicles the aftermath of heroine Sarahs traumatic kidnapping, in which she and her best friend were chained in a basement and tortured with two other girls. It is a quick read and it is hard not to fall for Sarahs frank and wry narrative voice.

Clearly, this is a book only for the bravest of readers. I was a bit hesitant about the subject matter, as I enjoy a great twisted tale of suspense but dislike the sort of gruesome and gory torture porn that horror films like Hostel have made popular. The Never List is tastefully done for such dark subject matter, in the way that I think the best tales of suspense often are. Although we get flashbacks of what Sarah and the other girls suffered through, the focus of the book is not on human suffering.

Zan has done a great job of creating a gang of likable female sleuths who have overcome an awful trauma together. When the three kidnapping victims who escaped the basement are told their captor will be eligible for parole, they reunite to investigate loose ends of their case. The male FBI agent assigned to their case is comically absent, a benevolent force always a phone call away but a bit too slow.

Good story, weak performance.

What made the experience of listening to A Wild Ghost Chase the most enjoyable?

It is another good E.J. Copperman story. Great for a short trip, and for a slight change of pace.

What other book might you compare A Wild Ghost Chase to and why?

The other four Haunted Guesthouse Mystery books (I got out of order on my listening). I am very much enjoying the story line and the characters, but mostly because I don't have to turn off the sound or yell "migraine" when children are around, great work E.J. Copperman, whoever you are.

What didnt you like about James Patrick Cronins performance?

As he was portraying Paul, a tall (6 foot plus) +- 225 lbs Private Eye, he shouldn't sound like he is 5'5" and around 145 lbs. He totally missed the mark with Alison, way to curt in her mannerisms, no matter how busy the story had her. Maxie was almost unrecognizable. But the worst of all was the grandmother (Loretta?). The actor made her sound like she was over 90, shuffling around with a walker, this book was not written in or about the late 60's when people were old at 65.

Kate Shaguk Stalker and Identity Thief!

Although I still like Kate and love the series' exploration of Alaskan culture I am frustrated by Kate's behavior in this book. She stole an identity, stole money, and acted as a stalker. I suspend my belief often while reading because I am a big fan of mysteries and they often require it. But in this case the crimes were not committed while solving a crime... they were planned and premeditated acts. It really concerned me that these acts were justified by Kate to herself and to Jack, and justified by the author to the reader.

This is where it started to come together

This is the book that really hooked me on the series. Grimes spread her wings and it shows in character development and dialog. Just the right amount of sweet, sad and dry humor.

This series won't be for every mystery lover, lots off British colloquialisms and I'm sure some people will be offended by Ash the Flash in this very sensitive century. This book was written in1983 and even with Ash the Flash in my very humble opinion is not dated.

Ahhh, Richard Jury!

Even though many of the regular characters are missing from this story, it is my favorite of the Richard Jury series available on Audible and I am anxiously awaiting the addition of more titles. One of my favorite mystery writers, Martha Grimes continues to add new cast members and develop their relationships as the series progresses. I particularly appreciate her characterizations of self sufficient children in books 2 and 3. Sorry to say Aunt Agatha is not a continuing presence in this story and I missed her but she will return! Years ago I owned the series on audio cassettes, read by Tim Curry, and I personally prefer Steve West's less stilted narration

Just not my cup of tea.

I love British mysteries and was hoping for a good long series to settle into. But, this will be my last. The characters had redeeming qualities, but nothing that made me care ever to read about them again. The ending, in my opinion, was really soft. There were some twists and turns, but most were broadcast before the action started.

Another goodie by Ms Grimes

I so enjoy these audio books that are available read by someone with an accent! The mystery keeps you listening and it is fun!

I want more of this series

This is a good series with good solid realistic characters. Callahan is funny, intelligent and bravee. I like her and her supporting cast. If i can't find these books on audible, I will get them for my kindle.

Good read...but...

Great plot! :-) Good development of characters. Probably the best in the series for me thus far. BUT a bit too much cursing for my taste... too many F bombs. :-(

A little rough in the beginning, but once it gets going it's OK. Early discussions with the perp gave it away, although I had the motive wrong.

A perfect thanksgiving

this was a fun book and Diana reading was perfect and a great Thanksgiving ending

Not the best narration. Very bad character voices and extremely squeeky voice. Story was OK but dragged out and inconsistent in character interaction. I would not recommend it to my book club.
