When they stop making full priced short stories.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The White House?
The book was too short to cut out anything

Jordan Kelly needs a new job and a new place to live. She's back in Harrison Falls, New York, living with her not so law-abiding uncles, in debt thanks to a credit card-stealing ex and pending grad school loans.
Enter the perfect job, a research position that includes room and board, which will allow her to spend her days hunting down rare mysteries for an avid book collector. There's just one problem: her employer, Vera Van Alst - the most hated citizen of Harrison Falls.
Jordan's first assignment is to track down a rumored Agatha Christie play. It seems easy enough, but Jordan soon finds out that her predecessor was killed while looking for it, and there is still someone out there willing to murder to keep the play out of Vera's hands. Jordan's new job is good...but is it worth her life?

    Love this book...
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes I would recommend this book to any of my friends who enjoy cozy mysteries - and it might be a good book for those who are not familiar with cozies to get started reading them.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the characterizations. I became very fond of Jordan and her uncles (and I was hoping that Officer Smiley would end up being a good guy). Also, the book moved along smoothly and didn't drag. It held my attention throughout.
Have you listened to any of Carla Mercer-Meyers other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to any of her other performances, but I have listened to a lot of audio books and I thought her performance was exceptional.
    Any additional comments?
I usually have two audio books going at once - one in the house on my Kindle and one in the car on my iPod. This one was in the car, but several times I brought it in because I didn't want to wait until I was on the road again to hear more. That's unusual for me, which is an indication of how much I enjoyed it. I will definitely be getting the remaining books in this series.
    Great new cozy series!
With cozy mysteries, it can be really easy to slip over the edge into sappy. This one doesn't do that. It's really quite good, and was so much fun to listen to! Victoria Abbott has done a good job of creating characters that work well together, and a plot that moved well and held my interest from beginning to end.
Jordan Kelly is just out of school and finds a job helping a very disagreeable woman research whether there is a missing Agatha Christie play somewhere in existence. This seems great work for her. Only problem, somebody out there is willing to kill people who are trying to find it. Jordan was raised by uncles who have a questionable relationship with the law, and she may be the only one who intends to make a living in an honest way. But these uncles turn out to be some of the best characters in the book. They may operate ouside the law, but they are there for Jordan when she needs it.

    That was fun!
Yet another bargain book success! Never heard of either the book or the author, but decided to roll the dice and take a chance -- and once again, that was a good idea.
It's funny, they say there are only four basic plots in all of fiction, but I'm not sure how that accounts for this one. As the story evolves, a pretty unique situation reveals itself -- although in today's crazy world I suppose it isn't quite as unique as I think it is. Even so, this was like nothing I'd ever read before. I loved the freshness of the whole thing.
Karen MacInerny has created interesting, likable characters and structured a truly unique plot but what makes this book a real delight is how funny it is. One of the side-stories deals with how Margie, formerly a stay at home mother, now a new, untrained, part-time private eye, is forced to deal with the head of her daughter's day care center. My kids are grown now, but it seems to me I had some of those same inane discussions with a similar Witch in Power when they were little -- you know, the "Solve (this issue with your child) by tomorrow, or we're expelling her." No, my daughter hadn't decided that she was a dog -- with all that entails, including eating on the floor, barking, biting, etc -- but I seem to recall similar disputes and similar chaos. And I also recall spending some evenings with one kid or the other, explaining just how important to Life As We Know it, that they amend their conduct by tomorrow morning, or all hell was going to break loose. Like Margie, I simply could not deal with having to find new child care arrangements. I'm sure most other working mothers will have had similar experiences. Odd how much more fun it is to remember those situations than was dealing with them in the first place!
Also odd was that so many readers compared this book to those of Janet Evanovitch. I don't get that at all. I've read/tried to read a couple of Evanovitch's books, and didn't enjoy them at all -- I've stopped even looking at her series. To me, the Evanovitch books came across as downright silly, whereas this one was genuinely funny. All in the eyes of the beholder, I suppose.
So? All in all, a good book and a great narrator. I'll be looking for more.
    Perfect!
Excellent and Smartly Quirky main character. If you like Steph Plum or Sookie Stackhouse you'll find this one a great beginning to what I hope will be a great series.

Book two gets a bit better
Well, that was certainly the most rapid fire recap of events and exposition from the first book. Seriously, did we need to get all that information again? It was way more repetitive than I like, but thankfully it was only the beginning of the book.
I liked this book much better than the first, mostly because the first book spent more time setting up the world and how things work there. Now that we have all that established, we can get into some serious cozy mystery solving. This mystery also brings us more into the culture of the crafters. We get to learn more about them with the introduction of Geo-crafters and magical charmed objects. Very interesting twists and turns.
There are a couple side plots that keep Darcy and Nick on their toes. A good cozy gives you more than one mystery to solve. I expect at least one of these plots to seep into future books. This also gives us more of the villagers that we loved in the first book. I love the familiars!!
I liked this narration by Coleen Marlo much better than the first. I am still bothered by her weird "o"s, but her pace feels more natural. It could have been a glitch in the upload or the production. She has a very warm quality to her voice that keeps the read flowing. She has a slight note of awe in her voice at times that fits Darcy wonderfully.
I am feeling more invested in the series and definitely curious what will happen next. I am a sucker for a series!
    Great Book

Alaska's salmon season is the perfect backdrop.
As I have said in some of my other reviews for this series, I love Stabenow's use of the state of Alaska, the description of its people and the land, the exploration of Aleut history, culture and government. I like Kate very much. I like the supporting cast very much. I like Alaska even more. In these books, it has become a very real, very odd, very quirky, and very appealing place. I have grown to love Alaska and all the craziness that comes with living there. In this book we find ourselves embroiled in the difficult, backbreaking work of salmon fishing. The setting is essential to the mystery which is lovely as it allows the story to flow from the circumstances. It is never jarring. This installment, and Breakup, are my two favorites of the series thus far.
    Kate's one of my Favs
I really love these, every one of them. They're good stories with great characters, but having them on audible is a real treat. Margureite Gavin does a bang up job narrating them.
    Loved this book
As always, I enjoyed the story telling. I love the characters and their interactions. I am absolutely a devoted Dana Stabenow fan. Marguerite has a lovely engaging voice and manner.
    Too much cliff-hanging...
Where does Killing Grounds rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
There's an awful lot of cliff-hanger scenes and the Monopoly game thread seems a bit forced, but Stabenow is becoming one of my favorite authors. It's probably in the top 2-3% of my many reads.
What about Marguerite Gavins performance did you like?
She's an excellent narrator for Stabenow's books.
    Stabenow's Alaska
Alaska through Stabenow -- one more time. The crime didn't occur until about a third of the way through the book. In this one, Kate's back in the fishing fleet, this time a deck hand. The characters are real people and the narrator's voice sounds like real people. The characters are subsistence fisherman -- their options about commercial fishermen are evident and it weaves into the theme of the story. And, in the end, the whodunit revolves around that issue. Kate #8 leads me to Kate #9...can't wait.

    A great story
I love the characters in this series and they truly come to life when this narrator reads them. I love the interplay between the characters and the believable way they treat each other. The story is a bit darker this time, but the situations and the conflicts are well written and interesting. I found myself hating the times I had to turn the story off. I find Callahan to be a woman of her times-independent but sometimes wishing for a help mate, a good friend to many although she does not sugar coat everything, a dreamer, and a professional business woman.she respects others, but she trusts her gut feelings, something that has kept me alive in some challenging situations. She find the support she needs to prove she is right in most cases and is sad when she is not. This is a great read!
    My favorite author!!!
I love Mary Kay Andrews. She takes me to a place in Georgia where family and friends make life easier and southern hospitality reigns. Hilarious characters and heartfelt plot!
    Boring
This book is not up to par with the others written in the past! I had to stop and move on! Great reader with. A great voice! So cute accent!
    Absolutely Love This Series
What aspect of Hillary Hubers performance would you have changed?
Being from Atlanta it drives me crazy when she mispronounces "Hapeville" it is not 'hap' 'e' 'ville' it is is 'hape' 'ville' Other than that it was great.
    Not Irish nor Southern accent!
I was a bit disappointed by the narration of this book. While the story was kind of interesting, the voice of the narrator sounded like if she was running was out of air, and at times it was hard to figure out which character was speaking. To describe it better, the narration sounded like of a very bored teenager asked to read a book out-loud by the teacher in class.

The type of cozy I don't enjoy
This is a specific type of cozy that I really don't enjoy. Many people clearly do, but for me they don't work. Specifically, the type of cozy that is just absolutely filled with annoying, demanding, mean and/or entitled characters. The main character is attractive and interesting, but in the first few chapters we're introduced to her bratty, self centered, spoiled brat of a "little" sister (over forty but acting like 15), the sisters icky fiancé, her destructively critical and continually carping mother, her "friend" who's constantly sniping, criticizing, and running her down (and also stole her husband), and a random cop who isn't interested in evidence just in bullying the main character to make himself feel tough. This is just a brief selection of some of the irritating characters we're treated to early on. There is another cop who seems nice, and is probably the romantic lead, but he's not sure about the main character because the obvious fact she's being framed is just too difficult for him to grasp. While some people like this sort of thing in a cozy for reasons that I don't understand, I prefer my cozies to be filled with largely attractive and fun characters since I read for pleasure and escape from the annoyances of the world, not to exacerbate them. I freely admit I didn't even come close to finishing this book, I only stuck with it as long as I did because the narrator is so excellent. I'll be looking for more books that she has read, but not from this series.
The Diva Runs out of Thyme
I had read another book in the series and really enjoyed it before listening to the audible book. At first I thought it wouldn't be good because the narrator's voice for the southern characters were so over the top. But once I got past it, the book started flowing and I got really really interested in it, and found the book enjoyable. I still didn't like the southern voice but thankfully was able to get past that.
    cute story but wishy-washy heroine
If you could sum up The Diva Runs Out of Thyme in three words, what would they be?
Sophie is good at what she does and is very nice person.

    Didn't Work For Me
This book has an unlikely premise - an inept Scotland Yard inspector receives assistance in solving crimes from his housekeeper. He's so inept he doesn't even realize she is helping him.
I don't want "realism" from cozy mysteries. What I look for are interesting characters (quirkiness helps), at least moderately complex plots and a good narrator. A little humor adds to my enjoyment.
The narrator of this book is fine. However, the characters seemed bland to me. The inspector was so clueless he annoyed me. There wasn't enough humor to overcome these problems.
I listened to about 70% of the book and gave up. I just didn't care how it ended.
    Fun cozy mystery!
I've read several Mrs. Jeffries stories and enjoyed them all. It was fun to catch the first in the series. Having some more background on all the characters gives the following stories more depth. I'll be reading another soon!
    REALLY BAD!!!
I can't understand how this book managed to get anything other than one star. I finished this book hoping that it would get better, but it was bad from start to finish. Who wants to read about a fumbling bumbling detective that is not only incapable of solving a case, but doesn't even know when someone is making fun of him. The way the case was solved with the help of his household was not entertaining but ridiculous. I'm going to have to get my credit back for this one!
    Very Entertaining
If you could sum up The Inspector and Mrs. Jeffries in three words, what would they be?
    Female servant rules!
Which character as performed by Lindy Nettleton was your favorite?
Mrs. Jeffries is vividly portrayed. She's no-nonsense but very devoted to her employer.
    HUM.............
I really wanted to like this book. I love the cover and I enjoy stories set in England, but try as I might I just couldn't warm up to it. I did try 3 times. I liked that Mrs. Jeffery was covert about her investigations into the murder of the doctor and I liked that the other staff members enjoyed helping her. Beyond that, this book just wasn't for me.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
The international best-selling novelist and Denmarks Queen of Crime, Sara Blaedel is entertaining all the way (Politiken) in this suspense-packed thriller featuring her acclaimed detective heroine Louise Rick.
An online flirtation can have horrific consequences, as Detective Inspector Louise Rick discovers when she is called to an idyllic Copenhagen neighborhood where a young woman has been left bound and gagged after a profoundly brutal rape attack. Susanne Hansson met her rapist on a popular dating website; fearing the assailant is trolling the site for his next target, Louise is determined to cut him off at the pass. But then a new victim is found - dead this time - and the case becomes even more complex when Susanne attempts suicide.
From scanning seemingly innocent singles profiles to exploring a digital window on the citys dark and dangerous nightlife, to understanding a troubled mother-daughter relationship, Louise races to uncover the shocking truth behind the crimes.
    Editorial Reviews:
Performer Alice Barrett Mitchell cuts into this crime thriller with the quick precision of an expert killers blade. A young woman is being brutally attacked. This, after all, is author Sara Blaedels dark, speedy world. Thrice voted "Most Popular Author" in Denmark, Blaedel, like her fellow Scandinavian, Stieg Larsson, delights in rendering psychosexual mysteries set within the loneliness of contemporary culture.
In Call Me Princess, the heroine, Detective Inspector Louise Rick, tracks an unknown rapist-murderer through the bowels of the Internet and the confounding employment of a false identity. The hardy will listen with the lights off. The squeamish shouldnt listen at all.

    Something went wrong for me
Maybe if I gave this review a few days to simmer I could identify what exactly I didn't like. I can say for starters that the narrator made the men sound like women, even more like women than the main character. Louise was great but she was the only character that was developed. Well, no, the victim developed too, but there were many interesting people that I wish had a greater description. It could be that there was too much inner dialogue? I'll leave at this: it's not a bad read, it has it's twists and suspense, but I have to give it a few days to decide if I want to commit to the series.
Nowhere Near As Good As Forgotten Girls
After listening to Forgotten Girls I was excited to hear more about Louise Rick and Camilla Lind but was very disappointed with this story. The narrator definitely isn't the same either and at times it was hard to tell when different characters were speaking because her inflections and tone was the same throughout most of the book.
The story never really picked up, there was never any part that was climactic. It just kind of moved along.
    Refreshingly different
Love my Scandinavian authors! Sara Blaedel has done a great job of keeping me guessing in a unique way. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

    Publisher's Summary:
When vintage cookware and cookbook collector Jaymie Leighton spies an original 1920s Hoosier brand kitchen cabinet at an estate auction, it's love at first sight. Despite the protests of her sister that the 19th-century yellow-brick house they share in Michigan is already too cluttered with Jaymie's "junk," she successfully outbids the other buyers and triumphantly takes home her Hoosier.
But that night on the summer porch where they've left the Hoosier to be cleaned up, a man is murdered, struck on the head with the steel meat grinder that is part of the cabinet. Who is this stranger - and what was he doing on their porch? Does his death have anything to do with the Hoosier?
As the police struggle to determine the man's identity, Jaymie can't help doing a little digging on her own, accompanied by her three-legged Yorkie Poo, Hopalong. But in her bid to uncover the truth about the hidden secrets of the Hoosier, Jaymie may be the one who ends up going, going...gone.
    Critic Reviews:
"Smartly written and successfully plotted, the debut of this new cozy series . . . exudes authenticity." (Library Journal)

History can be deadly in this cozy mystery!
A vintage Hoosier kitchen cabinet proves to be more than an interesting antique for Jamie Leighton. Against her sister's better judgment, Jamie really wanted that 1920's Hoosier to go along with all her old kitchen gadgets that she has collected in their old 19th century yellow brick house in Michigan, that she and her sister have inherited. She won the auction but she ended up getting a dead body on her back porch as well. Now she wants to find out what she has that others want before they kill her first.
The background story of the ownership connection between Canada and Michigan makes this story especially interesting. The Queen's Tea Celebration is fascinating, along with the description and history of the Hoosier Cabinet itself. The mystery starts out as purely a murder investigation and develops into a much more complicated quest for more parts of American history. A great start to this Vintage Kitchen Mystery Series.
A woman after my own heart!
If you could sum up A Deadly Grind in three words, what would they be?
    Entertaining, enthralling, memorable
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Deadly Grind?
The first scene with Brett Delgado definitely had me anticipating his role in the story.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The last scene with the perpetrator was my favorite. Jaymie used her brains to get herself out of the predicament instead of relying on dumb luck or someone else to save her.
    Any additional comments?
So glad the main character is one who finally uses her brain and doesn't get herself into stupid situations by acting on her feelings.
The narration was a little annoying at first, but I got used to it. The dialogue between characters sounded forced.
Hours of my life I'll never get back
I gave it a 3 because that's probably the protagonist ' s IQ. The plot stretched the limits of credulity and a few hours could have been shaved off this story. If this is a series I won't be listening to it.....ugh.
    Glad this one was cheep
Unfortunately the story was to cliche. I kept wanting to stop but hoped it would get better if I stuck it out.
