Great second book to a (hopefully) ongoing series

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I was hesitant to start this series based on some negative reviews, but I finally broke down and got the first book. I was pleasantly surprised and have now read the first 3 books. All are good, solid entertaining books.

Better than TV

Anna Lee Huber, surprisingly an American living in the South, writes mystery stories with interesting plots and well drawn characters. I much prefer listening to her novels while I work on crafts than watch television. I would recommend her books to readers who like series books and historical fiction. The narrator does a good job providing a low key performance that nicely reflects the complicated personalities of the characters.

Excellent

I love it. Always enjoy being transported back in time in 1830's Scotland to solve a mystery with Lady Darby. The narrator was excellent.

Great story, so-so narration

I really like this series but I SO wish the author or her agent had selected a better narrator. There is a lot of first-person narration by Lady Darby and this is when the narrator is most annoying and monotonous. The dialog portions are not as bad since she does vary the voices.

Cannot wait until the next one

I am really enjoying this series of books. Ms. Huber has a traditional way of forming her books that keep you wondering to the end. I also like her characters.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No, Because the protagonist keeps mentioning how smart she is. Arrogance. Police procedures are not followed by the cops. Duh. Author has them blundering. Also, Police dog procedures are not followed. Author doesn't have good knowledge of police dog handling. Author has this dog out of control all the time. For example: eating up crime scene morsels. Police dogs don't gobble up stuff at a crime scene. Example of blunder: Cop sits down at her beat in a food court to eat lunch and is unaware of teens behind her giving her the finger and making faces which is caught on security tape. A cop would never sit down EVER with back to activity and crowd. They sit facing the crowd. In their nature. Then she leaves her weapon and dog at home at final scene to get her in trouble. This would never happen in real life. Why take the dog to church, and leave it at home along with your weapons when you are going to a former crime scene and your regular beat? duh.....

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Least: Heroine takes police dog to church and the dog is out of control in many areas. Author has things happen to try and be funny. Not funny.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Just out of pace because the book is out of pace.

A few interesting twists and turns to keep you involved. A good bit of local NYC color to make expats want to return. Anything can happen in the big Apple so the implausible seems to work.

The Making of a PI

I enjoyed this book because it had a great storyline, the characters were fun and witty and the bittersweet end got me hooked. I'm looking forward to reading the entire series. the narration was also well done, adding to the story. Recommend!

Coming of Age intertwined with a detective mystery

I am not sure exactly what I was kind of book this would be when I requested it from Audiobook Jukebox. I have seen the series around, downloaded the first book for free from Amazon, and even did a Choose the Narrator Tour for the series back in March. But I hadn't read it. One thing I can say: this is not a cozy mystery. It is very much a cross between a thriller and a detective mystery interwined with a coming of age story. Because that's what Joy Humbolt does in the book, she grows up the hard way.

The book opens on Joy Humbolt telling us she became Sydney Rye, how it all started. Joy is a young woman, who's biggest problem each day is how blitzed to get when she goes out with her brother and friends. As a pretentious barista in a non chain coffee shop, and recently breaking up with her loser boyfriend Marcus, she snaps and loses in the middle of her shift. The victim, a middle aged woman who comes in orders a drink, really wanting a Frappuccino trademark item, but clueless about what she will really be getting. Needless to say the manager fires her, especially after she makes a comment about him masturbating in the beans. Yes, Joy is that young and stupid.

In a fit of pique, she heads off to the pound to get a dog. One that will give her the unconditional love and support that she hasn't been able to find from either a boyfriend or her mother. She ends up with Blue. Blue has one blue eye, one brown eye, has the head shape of a collie, with the body size of a great dane and the coloring of a siberian husky. He is a big, big dog, but she falls in love with him at first glance. It is Blue that leads her neighbor to tell Joy about a friend of a friend who knows someone who has a dog walking business she wants to sell. Which leads to her discovering a dead body and eventually becoming Sydney Rye.

This wasn't like anything I have read before. I tend to stick to cozy mysteries, though I am a fan of soft-boiled mysteries. This was darker, harder, grittier. Joy had to grow up fast and is left to deal with the consequences of her actions and how they affect other people. She ends up seeing the darker side of humanity, both in others and in herself.

Sonja Field had an interesting take on Joy. Sonja really nailed a lot of the voices, especially that New York Jewish motherly tone and the bored socialites. One voice in particular, I didn't agree with, at least not until after the book ended and I really thought about it. Now I think she was foreshadowing with her voice. Scary good job.

Good Norwegian Procedural

What a macabre beginning! Why are all these left feet showing up on Norway's shore? Steig Larsson's legacy continues as we get exposed to more Scandinavian mysteries and procedurals that are worthy of our listen. Horst has written a good book that includes lots of details about Norwegian life, criminal system, banking and other topics. I thought this police procedural was well paced and the reveal of information made sense. Kudos to Horst on his writing and well developed characters. I struggled with keeping up with the numerous names. Fortunately, the chapters are short in case you have to listen a second time.

I feel very neutral about the narrator. He did a fine job with the pronunciation of difficult language. He voice did not distract or enhance -- just neutral.

Whenever I listen to a Scandinavian book, I find myself spending lots of time on the internet researching vacations in Norway and Sweden. I will get there some day.

Tediously Slow

What disappointed you about Dregs?

Too long to get to any point. The main character was always tired. Poor policing skills. The plot was basically good, should have been an exciting read. If editors ever read the translation through I'd be surprised.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jrn Lier Horst again?

No. It's what I imagine hell is.

Slow boring voice. Inflection was poor. I will never listen to him narrating again

Not a Good Ad for Athletic Shoes

Name brand running shoes on severed feet, washing up on the shore . . . each LEFT feet, from four different victims . . . it has the Stavern police department turned upside down and Inspector Wisting befuddled . . . at first thought to be a boating accident, when there was only ONE foot . . . now known to be something much more sinister, Wisting and his team of investigators can't seem to find the common thread between the victims . . . meanwhile Line, Wisting's daughter, a journalist for a popular Norwegian newspaper is writing a piece on convicted murders and whether their years on incarceration has been beneficial in rehabilitating them . . . I found this thinking rather strange and naive . . . and very opposed to American thinking on crime and punishment . . . while allowing that Line is still young and idealistic . . . the prison sentences in Europe are ridiculously low, even for murder . . . and those convicted come out, only to repeat their crimes . . . the mystery of the murders, the severed feet and even Line's involvement with convicted murderers makes for an excellent story . . . I enjoy the details that this author goes in to . . .

Heavy on drama, light on mystery

I really enjoyed the 1st in the series and anxiously awaited this sophomore effort. However, as a mystery lover, I felt this book fell a bit flat. The mystery was tertiary in the book, following the relationship drama of the newlywed protagonists, Acton and Doyle, and the internal politics at the police station. Cleeland makes up for the thin mystery with wonderful writing (although Doyle has a few too many internal monologues, I found those to be the most amusing bits in the book.)

Overall, I enjoyed this book and loved "visiting" again with these characters, but I hope we see more police procedural in the 3rd entry in this series and less family drama.

Marcella Riordan is FABULOUS. She handles a range of voices, male and female, with aplomb. I plan to see out other books she has narrated.

Obviously a continuation

This book was just a tad repetitive, in part. You absolutely need to have read the first book to appreciate the background of this one. Additionally, it "ends", but without an ending. I feel as though the book was written to be part of a tied in series.

"Murder in Retribution" was a little bit of a slog, at first, as I needed to tie in the first of the series, which I had read some time ago.

I did enjoy the narration. Marcella Riordan does a very good job of changing accents, between the Irish, Oxbridge, and "lower class". In the same vein, the author manages to mix in quite a number of Irish phrases to provide a real sense of place.

Frankly, I can't wait for the next chapter.

If you like chick lit

The 1st book was mediocre, this one awful. She spent most of her time on sex and bitchy women. Even the reader seemed to drone on. I finally speeded up the narration just to get it over with. I will waste no more time or money on Cleeland.

Fun Psychopathic Romance & Mystery

Listen to first book first. Enjoyable off kilter detective & romance novel. Really enjoyed. I can't wait for the fourth installment.

Any additional comments?

I have to agree with a few other reviewers. The story was slow to start, the middle was okay, but not great, and the ending was too quick. Like a movie that ends leaving you feeling 'wait, it is over?' All that build up for a less than satisfying climax to the story.

The narrator was not great either. Her male voices were annoying, and her attempts at accents not very believable.

I was glad when it was over, and glad it had been on sale. Do not recommend unless you find a copy for free - pick up an earlier Jackson title instead. Or Patterson or Sanford or Hoag

Is there a zero star rating?

Not sure which I liked less, the writing or the reading. An eighth grader could have written this story. And towards the end, I started to wonder if someone had challenged the author to include 'damn' at least once in every other paragraph. Ridiculous, any cursing should feel natural, this was just weird. The cast of characters was incredibly diverse considering the setting was a small Montana town. As a Montanan, I can say that alone was quite a stretch, as was the mostly female sheriff's department.

As far as the narration--oh my, so very breathless. It made the protagonist seem like a 15 year old nitwit. And someone needs to let the reader know that Montanans--westerners--do not have some kind of modified southern accent.

The book was cheap, but sadly still overpriced.

Exciting Story

Another great story by Lisa Jackson. Only criticism that I have is when narrator is in the Alverez character her accent is Irish sounding and Hispanic. I would think Alvarez would be a Latina.

Worth the read

There were a few points I got confused within the story. The climactic wrap up was too quick for me. All those hours of build up and then it was a quick "end". Overall though I did enjoy the book

Fun and entertaining

This was a quick read. Meg keeps getting pulled in to a mystery at another museum while trying to run her own museum. The plot and characters are realistic. The pacing of the story was quick and kept me interested. It was a good book.

Interesting Setting and No Cats

I like cats. However, it seems to me that many cozy mystery series feature a protagonist who has cats. I read and enjoy some of those series. However, it is refreshing to find a series in which the protagonist does not have cats.

Nell Pratt has recently been promoted to Director of a museum in Philadelphia. I like Nell.

And I find her work, as described in this book, interesting. This is the second book of this series. The action picks up a month or two after the events in the first book. The "back story" is briefly explained in the second book. I believe a reader could enjoy this book without reading the first one.

The pace of this book is moderate. The mystery is not especially complex. What I enjoy about this book is the day to day events of Nell's life. Two unique new characters are introduced; I believe they will add interest in future books.

This is an easy going book with no graphic sex, violence or language. I don't find it as compelling as some of my favorite authors. However, I plan to read the next entry in the series because I look forward to more time with Nell.

The Best for Last

I think Sheila saved the best for last. I can just see the exhibits and they are adorable. I can relate to the daughter as well. A very good "read."

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I hate when the narrator tries to "act out" the different voices. Ex: She used a baby voice that sounded absolutely ridiculous. I couldn't even finish the book, and it was probably a good story. Thank God Audible let's you return stuff!

Boring narrator kills the story

I suspect that this might be a good book but the narrator is so flat and unemotional, that I found myself drifting off everytime I listened to it. The narrator is also not very good at varying the voice of her characters. It is more challenging for female narrators to "voice" male characters but this narrator really does a poor job. The men all sound alike.

Maybe I'll borrow the book from my library!

What made the experience of listening to The Dead Will Tell the most enjoyable?

Linda Castillo's books are like works of art and should be enjoyed with good wine and silence. She is so good at depicting the lives of the Penn. dutch or Amish if you prefer. I grew up very close to the Amish and remember as a child one of the mother's bring her daughter to us. We rushed her to the hospital with pneumonia, against the ordinance. They are harsh to some but there is something special about living a simple life with God. Her books are always well written and have "killer" plots. This one is really twisted and unpredictable.

GREAT story with plenty of twists & turns!

I've enjoyed all of Linda Castillo's stories. Just when I think she cannot top her last book, another is released that's even better. This one is her best, held me captive from the beginning to the end. No dull parts in this book!

Love this series.

Best cozy series EVER!!

Clare Cosi and all the crew at New York's legendary Village Coffeehouse are back in the latest adventures in this series. Finally out in Audible, which is my guilty pleasure for this favorite cozy series of mine .

A young billionaire Internet genius, Eric, has been making daily visits to Clare's coffeehouse, drilling all her baristas on differing coffee drinks. Clare suspects he's planning to filch her best ones, but before she can question him about this, a car bomb explodes outside of the shop, killing his driver and injuring people in the coffeehouse. Injured Eric was aided by Clare, and now he seems bent on giving her present upon present. Clare gets involved with the bomb squad to investigate who wants to kill Eric.

As always, this coffeehouse mystery if full of coffee facts, and compellingly interesting information on the subjects of this mystery--bomb squad of New York, billionaire's lifestyles, foodie events, and internet apt development. The best part is that all this information is integral to the mystery and adds so much to the fun of these books. The Audible narrator is excellent, accents and all. Of corse , we also delve more into Clare's love life with her New York cop, and Clare's daughter and ex husband's adventures too . Love love love this series.

Fast paced plot and interesting characters. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Good stories - 2 in one!

The stories were good. I didnt realize there were two. Mightve been interesting to have them intertwine more. Not a fan of smokers voice in the first book, especially when trying to sound like a man. Yikes

Don't think so. Purchased number 2 book Hit & Run, but want bother to listen to this to it, since this one was such a disappointment.
