Interesting premise, but heroine acted stupidly

What was most disappointing about Amanda Flowers story?

Heroine failed my 3-strike test: 1) she lied to the chief of police, whom she believed to be a good guy, about possibly being attacked on the street; 2) she withheld information in an ongoing murder investigation, and 3) she let a suspicious character, whom she knew worked for a company that opposed her family interest, into her car when she was on her way to gather info on the case. I stopped listening at about the halfway mark. Too bad, since the premise was interesting.

I have no complaint about Rachel Dulude's performance. I have not heard her before, so I have no basis for comparison.

Disappointment, since the premise intrigued me.

3 and a half stars

This was an okay cozy mystery. The pace is rather slow and the characters aren't fully developed. The plot was okay. The story wasn't bad but it was just typical. I will probably get the next one to see if it is more developed.

I enjoyed the book but was very let down by the sudden end. It didnt feel completed, like there were loose ends. That was disappointing.

This author is wonderful

Listening to Crime and Poetry gave me many hours of pleasure. Amanda Flower knows just what her readers want and her series is fresh and lovely. The narrator is particularly gifted. I highly recommend this series. I can't wait to read the next book.

Cozy and Tasty Mystery

I rate this as a fan of the genre of cozy mysteries, not literature in general. I really like this series and the recipes are good and inspiring too. I love the fact that Audible now provides the recipes as a download, so I don't need to pause the story and write the good ones down.

My judge of a good book is that the performance is entertaining does not distract from the story, the story is written and paced well and the two fit together in a way that I want to drive in the slow lane to hear more of the book before I reach my destination. This book hits all of those points.

I think it's a good thing when the thing I dislike most about a book is waiting for the next one in the series.

The best of the series!

This was my favorite book of the series hands down. We got a lot of Liddy & Mona, who are two are my favorites. We also saw a new side to Mona that was unexpected but fun. There was an overarching mystery going on with Aaron that kept me interested the whole way through also. The murder mystery was also interesting and kept me intrigued because I felt invested in the character who got axed. We first get to know Olivia a bit and develop a small connection, so when she's found killed it has more of an impact & I cared that justice is done. There is also an unexpected friendship blooming between 2 characters that I was surprised by, but really found myself loving...

As always the mini newspaper article stories & recipes tossed in make the this series unique & enjoyable. I enjoyed it all from start to finish & hope the books keep getting better as they go along!

Wonderful cozy mystery

I absolutely love this series! Even though the plots aren't the most believable, I look forward to each new book. The characters are fun and the story keeps me guessing. Plus they include a number of great recipes along the way.

Not Jance's best...

I've loved, loved, loved all the Joanna Brady books. I usually like the Ali Reynolds ones just fine, certainly enough to buy and read them. I don't care for the Beaumont ones at all. But despite my best expectations, this book was a disappointment.

The best news is Karen Ziembra as narrator -- considering how many gazillions of books Miz Jance must sell, she's had a collection of the worst narrators in Audible history. In the Brady books, she must have used six or seven different readers, most of them just dreadful -- which is the reason I now usually prefer to read those books, not listen to them. But Ziembra in this book was a pleasant surprise. Hope they use her again for subsequent books.

But in this one, the story line faltered and turned into a very different type of book. The beginning was good -- very good. And marginally believable, that otherwise reasonable people would turn their entire retirement accounts over to one guy, a "friend", to invest. That's really dumb -- we know that. But I could see it happening when the guy is a friend. So far, so good. I felt the terrible anguish Ali's parents must have felt -- that part was well done.

That said, somewhere about midpoint, the tables start to turn, and the book blossoms into a persistent smiley face that just won't quit. I'm obviously not against people doing "good deeds" and helping others. I greatly admire it, in real life. I like saints. But in reading mysteries, books of "suspense", where you're looking for dreadful things to happen, I really don't want to deal with a crowd of angels. Everybody here is working overtime to outdo everybody else in the "good works" division. It's seriously tiresome.

Ha ha ha -- I'm not a Scrooge. I just thought Jance went overboard in demonstrating saintly character in Ali, certainly -- who, granted, is always pretty much like that -- but also her long-suffering parents, Sister Anselm, who's overly saccharin in this book, the governor of the state (a selfless politician, for crying out loud?) in B. and all the High Noon employees -- even in the formerly (delightfully) nasty detective, who eventually earns his place in heaven too. Good grief. There's just too much happiness going on, all over the place.

If I'm looking for upbeat, inspiring and enriching literature, I'll read Mitch Albom. If I want a scary, tense tale chronicling the really nasty things people do to each other, I guess I'll have to stick to John Sanford.

Gripping

I kept expecting Lt. Joe Leaphorn to show up in various scenes. Chappell is a great story teller and I felt the book was almost in the league of Tony Hillerman. This is a modern day story set in the Navajo Reservation I the Four Corners Region. Our protagonist is Charlie Yazzie who has returned to The Res with a law degree, but finds few choices for his skills. He is unable to obtain employment in any law firms in off Reservation towns. The Navajo Nation hires him as a special investigator until a position opens up in the tribal legal department.

Thomas Begay, a school friend of Charlies from the Indian Bureaus tribal boarding school days, is charged with the murder of a Sioux Indian woman. It turns out she is an attorney with the Bureau of Indian Affairs investigating a problem with the Tribal watershed rights. Charlie sets out to prove Thomas innocent.

What makes the story interesting is Charlie has lost most of his fluency in the Navajo language and customs. The story provides a look at a people where the young are leaving behind the old ways but the older generation is hanging on tight to their past. Chappell provides an insight into the modern day problems of the Navajo people in a form of a good story. The story has engaging characters, fast action and some humor. Chappell provides explanations of Navajo history, culture and spirituality and how they have survived in such a rugged environment. Kaipo Schwab does a good job narrating the story. I cannot wait for more stories by Chappell.

An amazing audiobook!

The story was amazing and painted such a perfect picture with every scene. Also, the performance was perfect! They couldn't have picked a better reader. I loved this audiobook!

Enjoyable listen despite the abrupt ending

Kingdom Come - excellent detective story

This is an extremely enjoyable audiobook with a very sound, believable real-world plot that fans of detective novels, murder mysteries, and Jane Jensen's other works (Gabriel Knight, et al) will find altogether satisfying. The prose is warm, yet technical without going overboard. Mrs Jenson's sporadic inclusion of nerd pop culture and geek references are subtle and fun- unlike so many writers today who feel the need to bash their "nerd credentials" over the heads of the audience, Jenson writes with a confidence of knowing who she is and what type of story she wants to tell, while every so often sharing a fun wink of the eye with the reader.

The only criticism is that I found the story too brief. As a whole, a few additional chapters with some unexpected twists and turns might have changed my grade from "A" to an A+

Regardless, I highly recommend this book to any adult, and in particular, to any fans of Mrs. Jenson's other creations. If this book is the beginning of a detective series, I am sold on the sequel already.

The best Amish murder mystery story since "Witness

Okay, okay, so, I haven't read a whole lot of Amish murder mysteries. While I'm certain that there are more than the Harrison Ford movie and Jane Jensen's new book, "Kingdom Come", none come to mind. Certainly none that I've read. Despite originally being from Pennsylvania and spending a little bit of time in Lancaster, I can't say that I've spent an inordinate amount of time thinking about the Amish or their lifestyle and even less time reading fictional Amish murder mysteries. When it comes to the Amish, I like their baked goods, their rocking chairs, and their beards. I also like a good pair of suspenders. And horses. Horses are nice.

"Kingdom Come" is the first in a promised new series of mystery novels by writer Jane Jensen. Full disclosure: I've been a fan of Jensen for a very long time. I've played the video games that she's written and designed and I've read her previous novels. I am, loathe as I am to use the term, a Jane Jensen fanboy.

Even those unfamiliar with Jensen's work should appreciate and enjoy "Kingdom Come". It's a solid murder mystery; not too complicated (unless I've just gotten good at figuring out "whodunit") but creative, clever, and thoroughly enjoyable.

Jensen populates her novel with believable characters and dialogue, brisk pacing, and enough moments of pulse racing suspense to keep the pages turning.

the narrator was horrible....

The story was good but the narration was horrible. Angel Clark tried to change her voice for the male parts and failed miserably at it.

The Author had plenty of funny lines in this book that actually made me laugh out loud at times. But the story was good enough that I kept listening even though the narrator was horrible

Annoying narration

I really don't like Angel Clark's narration; her voices are ruining this for me. She makes the main character, Harper, sound like a nasal-y twelve-year old when she is supposed to be in her late 20s. Very annoying voices. She also tends to slow way down and almost sound like a robot reading at odd times. I am going to listen to samples before I buy from now on.

nice surprise

I bought this from Kindle Unlimited, thinking it might be cute. It ended-up being really witty and sometimes downright funny. The only drawback was that the narrator wasn't very good. She wasn't terrible, but she was often monotone and her voice is a little whiney. She also just couldn't capture the male lead. It made it hard to feel the chemistry between him and the female lead.

No need to shout(literally)!!!

This book was a light listen not to exciting but is pleasant enough. The narrator though...I don't understand why people who have this job feel the need to actually yell. Most people are hearing the books through earphones and this should be taken into consideration, she actually yells in parts the require a raised voice and even in parts that do not but that in her mind she thinks it is appropriate.

Yikes!

I like the Avery Shaw mysteries... but oh my goodness, this narrator is tough to continue listening to! Her cadence is off and nearly every guy-voice is high pitched and nasal.

It doesn't help that SEVERAL places have repeats from unedited recordings. I suffered through them, but I don't look forward to getting Book 7 through Audible. I'll probably bite the bullet and get the ebook.

As for the story, Book 6 may be my favorite as far as Avery's character development is concerned. I've wanted to like her from the get-go, but it was difficult in some of the earlier books... there was no end to her anger and it was starting to grate. At least in the last book in this series we see her anger and feisty nature doing more than upsetting her mother and making random people want to do her bodily harm.

Looking forward to more mysteries and more character development in future books!

*SPOILER ALERT* I don't know what it is with the name Ariel (perhaps the author has an arch nemesis and is immortilizing her in several bad characters or maybe The Little Mermaid was traumatic...) but it seems to pop up somewhere in nearly every book... for different characters... I think Book 6 also breaks this mold, unless I just blocked it out. : )

My favorite series

Love the characters, the banter, the stories. Narrator does good male voices. Got to be hard to pull off without sounding ridiculous. At least I know my Avery voice is. I've said too much.

Continues to be funny and full of crap

This book contains books 4 6. The hilarious adventures of Avery Shaw continues. She exasperates everyone with her crazy immature antics. Her aggressiveness to get the stories first, from the print media reporters is only slightly less murderous as she is toward television media reporters.

She takes malicious glee keeping conflict with her cousin, Derricks girlfriend and her former boyfriend, Jake Farwell former girlfriend who are both television news anchors.

Elliot, her boyfriend is driven mad with her reckless exploits which puts her in constant danger. What Elliot puts up for sex is just hysterical. Every Friday takes glee to raise her mothers blood pressure with her tee shirts with the sexual connotations.

If you like the earlier books, you will surely enjoy these.

Lots of errors but Avery showing growth

In Books 1-3 there were a lot of mispronunciations. In books 4-6 there were still a few mispronunciations but the main problem was repeated phrases and sentences. I don't understand why these are not being caught before publication.

I was pleased to see some growth in Avery's character and hope this continues.

Needs to reedited

Audible needs to pull this audio book and re-edit it. Multiple editing mistakes and repeats.

But overall the story is great! Absolutely love it!

Great Book

This is another great book in this series. Jenn McKinlay does a great job of developing her characters and the setting. There are several plot twist to keep the readers engaged. I can't wait for the next book.

Ok, on par with previous two in series

Finally figured out what bugs me about this narrator. She does a good job but sounds bored half the time. Then I was actually bored with the protagonist's love life "woes". I think this is as far as I go with this series.

I've enjoyed this series thus far.

I have noticed that Jenn McKinlay makes the important characters a bit obvious. Each new character who is introduced is rather extreme in one way or another, and you kind of know from the beginning that they are going to be involved somehow (the murderer or the one murdered or a red herring...).

Amazing story!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the characters in it. This is the third book in the series I've listened to and she has formed characters personalities so you want to know what happens with each one. Fantastic book! The narrator did an amazing job as well!

Story and Overall I loved. Read the previous two books on kindle and will go back to that for the next in line. I almost felt pitty with the Narrator. She does have a pretty nice voice, but more than often it felt like she's going to cry at any second. Sorry, I could not finish listening to it

Great Book

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite cozy mystery series. I enjoy the characters and how they continue to develop and grow. The mysteries provide enough twist and turns to keep the reader interested. Excepts from the books the characters write also add to the enjoyment of the book. Karen White does a great job reading and bring life into the characters. I can't wait for the next book in this series to be released by Audible.

Driven to lisren

A wonderful series to read or listen to and this one is no different! Love how the charters from the first book have continued thru. They feel like old friends now. completely invested in their lives. The plot lines are engaging, entertaining and a bit sad this time but in a wonderful way. Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed this book. There's a little bit of everything from suspense, to romance, to friendship, to mystery! Even the narrator's voice has grown on me!

Do not bother...

What would have made The Murderer's Daughter better?

I don't think anything could have saved this book, other than not writing it, in the first place.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jonathan Kellerman again?

I do not believe Jonathon Kellerman wrote this book. It was trite, shallow and made no sense to me. I could not finish this book.

How could the performance have been better?

The female leads voice was so depressing.

I am still a fan of Alex Delaware books and look forward to the next installment in the series.

Should be named diary of a schizophrenic. It started good but main character had no interaction with supposed villain.
