Wesley emerges from prison prepared to be the perfect hit man: calculating, deadly, and driven by money. On his release, Wesley follows Carmine's directions to locate a Mr. Petraglia. Pet and Wesley set up shop in Brooklyn, and execute their assignments with finesse - and occasionally, more explosives than are strictly called for. But Wesley isn't satisfied with his low-profile lot, and sets out to make a mark on the city that everyone will notice - which he does, in a shocking, dynamite conclusion.

    A Real Mind F%#*
Well written. The most realistic hit man book ever. Deeply disturbing. Great character development. Graphic violence.
There is no Reason for this Book to Exist 0 stars
This is the second Vachss book I bought. The first, Strega, a Burke Novel, was pretty bad, but not intolerable. I decided that I'd probably skip the Burke series and try another of his (generally) highly rated novels. Thus:
A Bomb Built in Hell - A truly horrible novel.
In essence, this is a biography of a very sick human (though I use that word advisedly).
He is a sociopath and is not even remotely likeable in any way. It is not entertaining. While the writing is OK, no amount of decent writing can overcome the garbage content. Even those who can handle extreme violence will find no comfort here.
The book starts early with killings and lots of violence... then continues with more killing and worse violence.
For six hours, I kept looking for any reason justifying Wesley's psychotic and super violent behavior. None. Absolutely NONE! He simply kills everyone, innocents included, throughout the book.
Even when he murders for a "reason" this is not vigilante stuff (which I can handle). Wesley is not only unlikeable from ANY viewpoint, he has no reason whatsoever to exist, and should have been removed from the chessboard at birth.
I bought this because of the generally positive reviews on Amazon, often a good source of reviews from those buying the print version. They let me down.
Other than the superb performance by Gigante (one of his best BTW), this is just trash. I bet he spent a long time in the shower after recording this thing.
I suggest you not even think a moment about spending your $$$ or a credit on this pap.
It is 100% junk "literature". Again... save your $$$.

Good World War II Espionage Tale
In "The Secret Vanguard," the 5th book in the Appleby series, Michael Innes starts the plot with a dead poet, then takes us on a wild ride around the English countryside as it was in 1940. Characters are kidnapped by strange foreigners, escapes are engineered, then escapees have to play desperate games of evasion, only to be caught again. As the story goes along, you are told that these bad guys are German agents, and if you stay alert, you will be told how all of this is tied to the murdered poet. The story is great fun, and reminds me a bit of "The Thirty-nine Steps" by John Buchan, which dealt with World War I spies in England.
I enjoy Innes's literate writing, his plots and his characters, especially Inspector Appleby, who is ordered by the Government to join in the chase after the Germans. Matt Addis delivers his usual excellent narration in this story, performing in both educated and regional working class accents in a polished and effective manner.
An excellent way to spend a day or two (or a long drive) listening.
Depends on what you're looking for...
I believed this would be a literary mystery, but it is really a wartime thriller circa 1939. If that is what you are looking for, it is quite good of its kind. But that is not the sort of story I like to read. This is my fault for never reading reviews before I chose a mystery, so I have only myself to blame.
    If I might explain...
Poet Philip Ploss lives an apparently comfortable, circumscribed existence on an estate in the Chiltern Hills. The opening chapter about him is lyrical and idyllic. Then we find he has been murdered.
In his house Dante's Purgatorio is open at Canto XXX: this is the 8th Circle, 10th Bolgia, the place of false witnesses, wicked impersonators, and counterfeiters.
Appleby and his friend Ambrose Heatherton, the archaeologist, discuss the case in their "customary place of refection." The crime appears entirely motiveless.
Clues leads to a library in Mecklenburg Square, replete with archaic denizens. We see a beautiful woman on a train reading Sir Walter Scott, and hear another passenger quoting Swinburne. In other words, there is every reason to think the essence of the mystery is literary.
Then abruptly the viewpoint shifts to the lady reading Scott and stays with her through the rest of the book, in a story about espionage, secrets, and wartime doings.
As I say, I was disappointed in the type of the story, but the writing is first rate, Appleby is his usual delightful self, and the story is good of its kind.
    Hope this helps.
    Great spy tale
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Secret Vanguard?
Just like The 39 Steps, this tale takes average people and throws them into a nest of German spys. What fun! I love Innes' Appleby books - you never know what you're going to get - murdering academics, the classic manor mystery, or a spy thriller. They are so much of their time and yet timeless.

    Prester John by John Buchan
If you want to learn how the British colonized South Africa, this is the book. If you want to learn how the native population may have viewed that colonization, you got it, this is the book. This book is about a Scottish immigrant who comes to South Africa and becomes involved in both situations. This book is a very active narrative that keeps the Scot on his feet, and then some, literally. Be prepared to try to understand the attitudes and customs of that time.
    Amazing adventure!
From start to finish an amazing adventure! Historical fiction that has brought a mythical priest king Prester John into a story of the early 20 th century.
A rousing tale, by th'eternal, rousingly told
The tale speaks of the white man's duties to uplift and govern natives. If you can put a hold on the natural self-righteousness that you'll get while reading this gem, you'll find yourself dashing through a "story of glory."
It's as good an adventure yarn as you'll get anywhere: real men doing real deeds...some for love of tribe, some for love of country, some for love of gold.
I'd not heard of John Buchan before this, but I'm surely going to look for other works of his.

    Too Confusing
I had a lot of trouble getting into this book. In fact, I had listened to the first 2 1/2 hours and then put it aside for a while because I couldn't get into it. Then when I decided to try it again I had to start from the very beginning since I couldn't remember anything about it. At least the second time through I started to understand it a little better. This book might have been easier to read than to listen to because it took a lot of concentration to figure out what was going on and the formatting. In fact, I never did figure out a lot of it. It keeps jumping back and forth between all these different characters. You would hear about something from one person's view and then the same situation from the other person's view. Sometimes it even seemed like some of the chapters might have been out of order. My mind kept drifting and I didn't care enough to go back and listen to what I might have missed. I just wanted to get to the end, which of course I didn't understand. Not the part where you finally find out what was going on, but the very end.
Considering the material I think the two narrators did a very good job.
    Very difficult listen
What could Will Carver have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Tell the story in a more understandable way so that it could be followed.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
    Narration was clear and entertaining.
    Any additional comments?
At multiple points while listening to this book I thought someone had put chapters together in the wrong order. The book/plot was very convoluted and confusing. I continued to listen to all of it to try to understand what they had done wrong. At the end I was convinced it wasn't their problem, it was the author's. Interesting idea but very poorly constructed!
    Scattered Story
I'm not sure how I came across this book and decided to use one of my credits at Audible for it, but it is definitely not my cup of tea. I don't like the constant visions the detective is having. They are drawn out and unhelpful. I thought the description of the main character waking up after a long night and responding to a knock on his door while retching three times was especially annoying. This author is a talented wordsmith. He's just terrific in some of his descriptions of places and people. It's just that the premise is not one I buy into (visions, good and evil, etc.). The switching between the different characters is not clever. I don't find the view of the victim knowing that his/her death is going to occur moves the story along at all. The book is tedious.

    "A pretty good mystery novel"
Bernadette Calonego is a native of Switzerland raised in the German-speaking part of the country. She obtained a teaching diploma from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland majoring in German, French and English literature. She worked for a time as a reporter-editor for Reuters news service in Zurich assigned to the financial desk, and it was from this experience that inspired her to write "The Zurich Conspiracy".
Calonego's mystery/murder novel is born of a very complex plot, taking its intrigue from the nefarious behind the scenes maneuverings of the rich and powerful of a high image corporate machine. Everyone is scratching and clawing to get to the top, and some don't care what it takes to get there. Calonego draws upon a considerable number of characters in her work and that throws certain confusion into the soup that successfully keeps the reader pondering the connections. The heroine of the story, Josefa Rehmer, steadfastly progresses the reader through the anonymous narrated mystery step by step until the final conclusion.
This was a pretty engaging murder/mystery conspiracy type theme, well written, and as mentioned, rather complex in its character devices. It was a bit anti-climatic at the conclusion and somewhat puzzling too. Because of the intricate weaving that Calonego does with her characters, it takes a bit more than casual attention to understand the full interplay; I felt like I needed to read it again to clear up some of my lost connections. I will have to admit that I never did fully figure out the end, there seemed to be some motivation missing to explain it. One other trouble I had was visualizing Frau Rehmer. I know this was a translation, but the German to English translation left me somewhat perplexed. I just couldn't come to grips with a female named Josefa; it just didn't conjure up an image of someone feminine - I kept thinking of Ruth Buzzi's character in the old Rowan & Martin Laugh-In TV series.
All in all this was a good mystery-murder novel steeped with intrigue, and I would recommend you add it to your reading list. I would rate it pleasurable, not particularly memorable but pretty good just the same.
I enjoyed the various places in Switzerland because I had been ...
Bernadette Calonego has produced a very interesting book, but, for my taste she has spread the story
a little thin in that there seem to be too many people to cover in the mystery.

    decent pastime book
decent book, very graphic & not for the faint heart. Not my style but it wasn't a bad book.
    this story makes no sense.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
no. the book was entertaining but it really was quite silly.
What was most disappointing about Irving Wallaces story?
this author expects you to listen to 4 really supid egotistical men who kidnap a movie star, then one of the dumbbells gets away and just goes home.
Which character as performed by Eric G. Dove was your favorite?
the mechanic was done very well as was the milktoast and the insurance salesman.
Was The Fan Club worth the listening time?
it had potential to be a great book. either a really thriller or a funny book. these kidnappers had a very low iq.
the sex was boriing and should have been cut a lot shorter in the story.
    it was a strange book.
    Any additional comments?
i thouhgt it was going to be a thriller. at first i thought it was a comedy but in the end i am not sure what it was.
Irving Wallace - a Master in character development
If you could sum up The Fan Club in three words, what would they be?
    incredible detail, unforgettable
What other book might you compare The Fan Club to and why?
Although I can't come up with a similarly - themed book that has this kind of character development which comparable to the great Russian authors of the 1800's. The theme is definitely "be careful what you wish for, the wish may come true." Crime and Punishment might be a good book to compare this to, not for a parallel theme, but for the way you can't let go of thinking about it once you have committed yourself to listen. It is long, but if you listen to it you will not forget it.
I read this book when it came out in the 70's and I never forgot how powerful this novel was - maybe because of the subject, but I think mostly because of the way it was written.
I think Irving Wallace was one of the best writers to come out of the 1900's.
    Which scene was your favorite?
When Sharon Fields shoots the rapist, that decides to kill her, in the nuts,
even though he is dying with a knife in his back.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
be careful what you wish for, the wish may come true
    Any additional comments?
I noticed that this novel received only a couple of reviews and they were average at best. If you have never heard of this author or did not finish listening to the complete
book, I would recommend checking them both out again.
Also, I am a male in his 50's, so I remember when we had female actresses that were iconic. Remember this book was written before aids, breast implants, etc.
Bob Hope would bring the iconic beauties to visit and perform before the troops overseas. Although this story, of course, takes this adoration for these women
to an extreme, Irving Wallace masterfully wrote what could have actually happened.
A female may look at this story completely different than a male.

Rucka Grabs You On Page One And Never Lets Go
Greg Rucka is one of the most creative and readable authors working today. His stand alones are often great and I love his Atticus Kodiak series--which are too infrequent for my desires. But in "Alpha", Rucka is apparently debuting a new series character named "Jad" Bell, former Delta, who now hires out for cause and country. Based on this initial effort, Bell is a character well worth watching (reading) in that he is highly trained, intuitive, conflicted with a still unclear back story, and very deadly. He leads a team of four former co-warriors, each with skills and training that make them a most formidable foe.
Rucka has a knack for seizing on some element of everyday life around which to build his thrillers and in "Alpha", that practice is continued as Wilsonville, the world's largest theme park located in Southern California--think Disneyland on steroids--comes under an apparent terrorist attack. Jad Bell along with one of his team members is working undercover in the park as secret governmental leaders are covering several theme parks as possible targets for a rumored terrorist attack. A sleeper agent has been "awakened" to plant a dirty bomb in Wilsonville at the height of summer attendance, capture some hostages, and issue vague demands for release of world terrorist prisoners. But as Bell springs into action, he wonders if this is the real end game or if something even more sinister is afoot?
Oh, and you want complications? How about the fact that Bell's former wife, their hearing impaired daughter, and her deaf classmates are in the park and become hostages by the terrorists. The evolution of Bell's character as this deadly warrior has to deal with familial roadblocks is fascinating reading. Another complication is the question of who is financing this enterprise and who, on the inside, is actually a part of the scheme? Rucka employs twists, double crosses, and sleight of hand to keep readers wondering who really is who they say they are and who really trusts whom--among both the good guys and the bad guys. With continual impressive chess-like maneuvering between Bell and his deadly antagonist, readers must speculate as to who will ultimately survive on both sides of this conflict.
Rucka is an adept story teller who employs tight plotting and fast precise pacing to build a sense of relentless suspense and tension. His knowledge of weaponry and military tactics and strategy gives a level of authenticity to his books as does his highly believable dialogue and characterizations.
