    Enemies are everywhere.
When Sophie Brinkmann - nurse, widow, single mother - meets Hector Guzman, her life is uneventful. She likes his quiet charm and easy smile; she likes the way he welcomes her into his family. She quickly learns, though, that his smooth facade masks something much more sinister.
Guzman is the head of a powerful international crime ring with a reach into drugs and weapons that extends from Europe to South America. His interests are under siege by a ruthless German syndicate who will stop at nothing to stake their claim. But the Guzmans are fighters and will go to war to protect whats rightfully theirs. The conflict quickly escalates to become a deadly turf war between the rival organizations that includes an itinerant arms dealer, a deeply disturbed detective, a vicious hit man, and a wily police chief. Sophie, too, is unwittingly caught in the middle. She must summon everything within her to navigate this intricate web of moral ambiguity, deadly obsession, and craven gamesmanship.
The Andalucian Friend is a powerhouse of a novel - turbo-charged, action-packed, highly sophisticated, and epic in scope - and announces Alexander Söderberg as the most exciting new voice in thrillers in a generation.

    "[An]...excellent debut." (Publisher's Weekly)
"The international cast is packed with compelling bad guys, the plot is intricate and urgent, and the dialogue is tense and true and sometimes even funny. A joyride of a read." (Chris Pavone, author of The Expats)

Normally I don't review before I finish a book but I could not bring myself to listen to any more of it. The narrator doesn't help this book at all. And it needs a lot of help. The characters are disconnected. The plot is disconnected (or maybe it pulls together at some point but I never got there). Supposedly this is part of a three-part series, but it's the only one from the series I'll be accessing.
The reviews are all over the place. There are people who love it (and I'm glad for them) but it was not worth listening to and I wasn't going to waste time on the second half. There are hundreds of thousands of good books. I've switched over to one of those now.

    Publisher's Summary:
Charles Burton, journalist, cannot get work past Iron Curtain censors and knows he should leave the country. However, he is in love with his secretary, Anna Maras, and she is in danger. Then the President is assassinated and one of Burtons office workers is found dead. He decides to smuggle Anna out of the country, but her reluctance impedes him, as does being sought by secret police and counterrevolutionaries alike.
Eric Ambler was born into a family of entertainers and in his early years helped out as a puppeteer. However, he initially chose engineering as a full time career, although this quickly gave way to writing. In World War II he entered the army and looked likely to fight in the line, but was soon after commissioned and ended the war as assistant director of the army film unit and a lieutenant-colonel. This experience translated into civilian life and Ambler had a very successful career as a screenwriter, receiving an Academy Award for his work on The Cruel Sea by Nicolas Monsarrat in 1953. Many of his own works have been filmed, the most famous probably being Light of Day, filmed as Topkapi, under which title it is now published.
He established a reputation as a thriller writer of extraordinary depth and originality and received many other accolades during his lifetime, including two Edgar Awards from The Mystery Writers of America (best novel for Topkapi and best biographical work for Here Lies Eric Ambler), and two Gold Dagger Awards from the Crime Writer's Association (Passage of Arms and The Levanter). Often credited as being the inventor of the modern political thriller, John Le Carre once described Ambler as "the source on which we all draw." A recurring theme in his works is the success of the well-meaning yet somewhat-bungling amateur who triumphs in the face of both adversity and hardened professionals. Ambler wrote under his own name and also during the 1950's a series of novels as Eliot Reed, with Charles Rhodda. These are now published under the 'Ambler' umbrella.

    disappointing
Eric ambler is a favorite of mine but this book is stilted and uneven. The characters are superficial and the story gets bogged down. I couldn't even finish it-
    Ambler lite
This is not one of Eric Ambler's better novels, which may be the reason he published it under a pseudonym. Still, second-rate Ambler is better than most of the genre. As always, Ambler shows a formidable grasp of the geopolitics of his time. One would be tempted to think "The Maras Affair" was a quick exploitation of the Hungarian Uprising of 1956--except that Ambler published it in 1953! Like all of Ambler's novels, this one has no heroes, but I find the non-heroes of those published under his own name are more sympathetic.
    Re Mras Aaffair Eric Ambler
Very boring, glad to finish it.
Well below Eric Ambler's high standard.
Lacked suspense and in no way resembled previous novels.
Did Eric Ambler really write this?
    Five Stars
    Very good story

Night Life, a brilliant sequel to the classic novel of vampires re-imagined - Live Girls
When Ray Gartons Live Girls was published in 1987, it changed the face of vampire fiction. The gritty, urban story of Davey Owens dark seduction and reluctant transformation into a creature of the undead has become a classic of the genre.
In Night Life, nearly two decades after battling the vampires of the Midnight Club in New York City, Davey is a marked man. He lives a quiet life in Los Angeles with the love of his life, Casey Thorne. The vampires he did not destroy back then have been hunting him ever since, eager to take their revenge - and now they have found him. For what he did to them, they are determined to make him pay with his last drop of blood. With the help of old friends and new allies, Davey and Casey must face the bloodthirsty nightmare of their past. This time, they may not have a future.

A very good follow up to Live Girls.
    Any additional comments?
Its been almost 20 years since Davey blew the shit out of Live Girls. Vampires are still alive (you know what I mean) and well in the sex trade and they havent forgotten. They thirst for revenge. Now that Davey is out from hiding, he wants to finish what he started all those years ago. Mutants and Brutals and Anyaoh my!! It is going to hit the fan big time and its going to get bloody.
A very good follow up to Live Girls. It was nice to see a few of the LG characters revisited and the story continued. Vampires are cool when they are nasty and mean and violent. These be those.

What do you get when you put a heavyweight boxer, a full-blooded Apache, an itinerant preacher, a movie stuntman, and a bunch of other colorful misfits together in the jungles of Guadalcanal behind a grizzled old sergeant on a mission to take out a Japanese observational post? You get the Rat Bastards and a whole mess of blood and guts. Ray Porter performs this audiobook as if between puffs of a cigar in the back of a helicopter, dripping blood and sweat. This WWII adventure story is a violent and gritty ride where youll hear glorified heroics next to real gritty, problems - from jock itch to Dear John letters - that soldiers have to deal with.

    Editorial Reviews:
Death Squad: The Rat Bastards is the second book in Len Levinson's action-packed men's adventure series. In scenes dripping with gore and slithering with snakes, Death Squad follows a platoon of outcast soldiers in the South Pacific during World War II. Most of the platoon's members - including a certified lunatic, a racketeer, a bank robber, an Apache warrior, and a movie stuntman - would be in jail or the psych ward if they weren't in the Army, and the soldiers' personalities clash in memorable ways. Levinson's vivid writing brings the scenes alive, and performer Ray Porter does a superb job capturing the soldiers' regional accents. Recommended for fans of tough-guy war fiction, and anyone who enjoys blood, guts, and explosions.

    Exhaustively descriptive, annoying!
Would you try another book from Ken Goddard and/or R. C. Bray?
Not sure. Loved his narration of Brown's Requiem by James Elroy, but not so much in this book.
Would you recommend The Alchemist to your friends? Why or why not?
    Probably not
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
    So so.
Was The Alchemist worth the listening time?
No - I couldn't finish it. Found the descriptive language distracting and annoying.
    Any additional comments?
Audible reviews don't feel as trustworthy as they have in the past. Amazon?!? I've been a big audible fan and customer for years. Not so sure anymore...
    The Alchemist
Absolutely riveting not to mention scary. As a chemist , this a very real scenario and is actually happening in Russia , a substance called knockoff heroin. a substance whose main side affect is the flesh eating bacteria. People who continually use that product have a life span of 2 years.
    Skip this one!
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. I had high hopes for this book, but just couldn't finish it. Not sure whether the fault lies w/ the author or narrator, but the accent, speech patterns and dialog for one of the novels central characters, "Rainbow", was delivered in a manner that was offensive. Clearly, the narrator/author don't have a clue on how Black people, educated or otherwise, speak. I had a similar experience with another book I bought some time ago about the Baja Drug Cartels in which most of the locations and characters were in Baja California, Mexico and all of the characters names were Hispanic. Apparently, the narrator had spent little or no time learning to pronounce any of the names of the characters or Mexican place names. His Spanish accented English equally poor. It showed little respect for the people or the language of the area.
Would you be willing to try another book from Ken Goddard? Why or why not?
    Maybe
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of R. C. Bray?
Someone with greater sensitivity towards how ethnic characters speak.
Could you see The Alchemist being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
re: Movie - No. Not w/o a major rewrite of how the ethnic characters (especially "Rainbow") speak and act. As written, Rainbow's dialog and delivery were racially offensive.
    Great book good twists
Great book, good characters and an interesting plot.

"Dead Dog is a sharp, intelligent thriller, reminiscent of the Hap and Leonard series. A very satisfying read!" (Ryan C. Thomas, author of Hissers)
    Members Reviews:
    Enjoyable read
Would you listen to Dead Dog again? Why?
I would not listen to it again but I would recommend it. The story was told well enough that I would not need to have another reading to remember it.
What did you like best about this story?
This isn't my typical story genre but it came highly recommended. The story moved at a good pace and kept me interested the entire time. I also enjoyed the location and the description of the terrain and creatures. That brought a well rounded feel to the story.
Have you listened to any of Michael Hackers other performances before? How does this one compare?
My first Mr. Hacker performance and I will be looking for more. His style brings a lot of depth to the characters and really pulls you into the story. Quite often a reader can make or break a book. Mr. Hacker makes this book for me.
    Outstanding
Would you consider the audio edition of Dead Dog to be better than the print version?
Yes. I could never read any book as well as this audio book was read.
What other book might you compare Dead Dog to and why?
The descriptions through out the story reminds me of listening to Will Patton reading a James Lee Burke story.
What does Michael Hacker bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Feelings. You are part of each character.
    Any additional comments?
Foul language is constantly used and is part of the story for the characters. If off color language is acceptable to you then this book will be in your all time top ten list.
Amazing story from an incredible voice
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would absolutely recommend Dead Dog to a friend. The story is gripping, gritty & incredibly funny. Michael Hacker's narration brings this story to life in ways that I can't hear anyone else narrating it. He actually becomes Max.
What other book might you compare Dead Dog to and why?
The performance is reminiscent of Mystic River read by Scott Brick. The vocal cadence & timber reminds me of Bricks performance. The story, not so much but just the performance.
Which character as performed by Michael Hacker was your favorite?
I gotta say Max is my favorite character. Just badass & doesn't take any crap from anybody.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Definitely.
    Any additional comments?
If you like your stories gritty with a sense of humor then I highly recommend this book. The accents aren't over the top, the production is top notch & it's about a man & his dead dog named Gator. Whats not to like?!

    Not the best
This is not one of his greatest books very poorly written in my opinion.it was that bad I never even finished it .
    grate
another good book by this man intresting very enjoyable lision one to hear over again
Simple and easy to get into , looking forward to the next ,
My first Andy mcnabb and I enjoyed it , straight onto the next now without hesitation , think I'm gonna enjoy this mans stuff , narrator seemed to young but I guess it fits with the characters age and I enjoyed his style , a great listen , hope the rest are longer ,
A matter of life and death
The beginning dragged a little for me but once training was over, oh, my, word! What an adrenaline filled race to the end!
You watch these things on film and the heroes come home, but this is reality and not everyone comes home. And those who do, will never be the same again.
I could not put it down I the end and desperately wanted to know what happens when the pressure and danger kept mounting. When this you must trust are not trustworthy, what is left?
I am glad I persevered through training, it was worth it!
The narrator was adequate. He would not have been my first choice but succeeded in presenting the tension buildup.
Great narration - typical Andy McNab story :)
What did you like most about The New Recruit?
Andy McNab's attention to detail makes the story believable.
What did you like best about this story?
The narration really brought the characters to life - good fun.
What does Jack Hawkins bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
The hardness of the characters shines through thanks to Jack Hawkins
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Dangers surrounds you from all sides in the deserts of Afghanistan

    Members Reviews:
Deeply disturbed, but at times close to poetic
I read several, I think 3, of Jack O'Connell's novels, back 20 years ago or so. He had a sort of cock-eyed view of the world, with events in his book being tinged with a bit of dark humor. I can remember one of his books having a hook on the back cover involving the question of where the undercover vice cop, masquerading as a hooker, was supposed to put her .357 revolver, when she was dressed in a skimpy dress and carrying a tiny purse. As he progressed, however, O'Connell got darker and darker, and somehow I lost track of this current book, coming across it and reading it just now. It's incredibly dark and forbidding, with atmosphere that's so noir it might give you nightmares.
By now Quinsigamond has become sort of a dark allegory for everything wrong with American society. My guess is that politically O'Connell is of the very far right or the very far left. The political machine that runs the city in which his novels are set is so politically dysfunctional it's darkly funny, but very depressing. Our hero is an ex-cop who has turned himself into a cabbie in the aftermath of the death of his wife, also a cop, in a mysterious explosion. She worked for a shadowy character known as the Inspector. No one really knows what he does, or did, but everyone was once intimidated by his power and authority. His chief talent is an almost inhuman ability to get suspects to talk, but how it works and whether the information they relate can be relied on is another matter. As the story begins, a crime boss's thugs try to torture our protagonist, Gilrein. They want something they think he has, but he has no idea what it is, and after being rescued, he tries to look into what he's supposed to have, and where it actually is.
It's hard to follow the plot in this book, and at times frankly it's so dark it's not really that believable. Part of the plot takes place in an imaginary country somewhere in Eastern Europe that seems to be a cross between the worst aspects of Nazi Germany and something from the Eastern Block during the Cold War. Pairing that with Gilrein navigating the streets of Quinsigamond trying to figure out why dark forces are trying to kill him, and you get a very perverse, dark novel. By the end, when you discover what the crime boss wants and why, the sickness of the novel has almost overtaken everything else.
If you know O'Connell and you've read other books he's written, the ending isn't out of bounds, but otherwise, if you don't like horror stories, this book might not be for you.

    Great Story, Meh Narration
I loved the story, but the narrator was a bit lacking in emotion, especially during the very emotional scenes.
