Meet Rook. A middle-aged philosophy professor with a sarcastic sense of humour, an ongoing rivalry with his highly-strung colleague Jeremy, and a rocky relationship with his ex-wife. But he has far more pressing matters to attend to than domestic disputes and academic feuds. He moonlights as a private investigator.
Armed with a quick, inquisitive mind, an arsenal of philosophic quotations and an addiction to fear, he is willing to embroil himself in any sticky situation which comes his way. His latest assignment involves the Steele family - a set of notorious criminal gangsters. Coming from a world of underhand dealings they do not want to get the police involved when a member of the family is murdered. So they turn to Rook.
Will his philosophical investigations get to the heart of the matter and solve the case? Or will their dark and dangerous world prove too hard to crack?

    Dark, tight, and wicked fun!
    Any additional comments?
This is another book that had me from the first paragraph. Not so much for plot twists and turns, but for the Chandleresque character studies and moral dilemmas in the plot. Loved the struggle between the protagonist and his head of department and the outcome of that subplot. Made me laugh!
A fine example of the genre.
If you enjoy intelligent detective fiction that nods knowingly to some of the greats, youll love this. As good a mystery as Ive heard, and performed to perfection.

    Publisher's Summary:
When the fellows at an Oxford college appeal to Peter Wimsey to resolve a dispute, he and Harriet are happy to oblige. The dispute between the two passionate parties is evenly balanced, that is, until several of the fellows unexpectedly die. And the causes of death bear an uncanny resemblance to the murder methods in Peter's past cases - methods that Harriet has used in her novels.
    Critic Reviews:
"Sayers's fans won't be disappointed, and newcomers are in for a treat" (Guardian on The Attenbury Emeralds)
"A pitch-perfect Golden Age mystery; not a pastiche but a gem of a period puzzle that belongs on the shelf beside the Wimsey originals." (Financial Times on The Attenbury Emeralds)
    Members Reviews:
    A Reasonable Progression
I write this after reading some less than positive reviews from others. JPW has made a good effort to keep the Wimsey canon going, and has done quite well. The stories have progressed the timeline reasonably although there seems an undue concentration on the domestic arrangements rather than the 'plot'.
Generally JPW books are longer, slower and more ponderous than those of Dorothy Sayers herself. The originals were much tighter, even if Sayers had a predilection for literary quotations, a predilection that JPW overuses.
I think The Late Scholar is one of JPWs better efforts, along the lines of The Attenbury Diamonds (athough in that book the fire a Dukes Denver and ducal accession were unecessary distractions). I enjoyed its sense of time and style and a good evocation of Oxford, certainly as good as the Gaudy Night sense of the University.
The narration was not good and did not add to the experience nor help the book, but this is compared to Ian Carmichael who was made for the part, as a narrator or actor.
Yes there were mispronunciations, yes the was confusion over character voices (Parker was the wrong voice altogether), but overall the sense of the place and time and people was reasonable. I do not agree with the reviewer who could not finish the audiobook. I have listened to it three times this year (in full) and probably will do again in the next few months.
Just a few other points, in my subjective view:
    - Contrary to the Publishers Note, Gaudy Night was not one of Sayers's best, it also was too slow and ponderous.
    - The Wimsey canon is just that, about Lord Peter Wimsey, and should not be just a vehicle for Harriet Vane.
    - I hope JPW does continue the canon, about and of Wimsey, preferably set in the pre-WWII years, because that is his real period.
    - I hope Ian Carmichael can be convinced to revive from his eternal rest too give us the best narration, or if not then a IC clone.
    Underwhelming
What was most disappointing about Jill Paton Walshs story?
The story is contrived. Too many bits brought in from earlier Sayers books in a very contrived way and lacking the development of relationship between Peter and Harriet. Lovely descriptions of Oxford but really not as good as Jill Paton walsh's earlier Sayers books.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Like the other reviewers I love Edward Petherbridge and Ian Carmichael. Gordon Griffiths was a shock. You become used to it after a while but it lacks Peter's tone of irony and bunter's voice didn't seem to match at all.
    Any additional comments?
I did listen all the way through but it was never gripping.

Love author but TERRIBLE book and narrator
The narrator was terrible and it took 16 chapters to get to the murder. I love her other books but don't waste your time on this one.
    Story doesn't deserve Guidall's narration
I love George Guidall - He could read a grocery list and keep me listening - but this story was so completely far-fetched and incredibly stupid that I had a hard time finishing it. Alzheimer's patients can't remember how to turn ON the television, let alone hit the record button and switch channels. This "drug" that is supposed to mimic Alzheimer's symptoms given to the goon's daughter to shut her up - well, let's just say it's a total misrepresentation of the symptoms themselves. And the other characters? No group of people could all be that dumb. I suppose the concept is plausible, but lack of character development and dialogue so shallow that half the time you don't know who's speaking is not my idea of good writing. Skip this one - but keep listening to George Guidall!

Red Dragon, kept me on the edge of my seat
Hi really enjoyed this, despite having previously watched Manhunter, which is the 1986(?) film adaptation and knowing what was coming, I was still captivated and kept on the edge of my seat. I listened to this whilst completing a large painting and it kept me alert and interested throughout, I often didn't want to stop for a rest as it meant stopping listening.
I was enthralled by the mind of the Dragon, in particular his requirement to evolve and the processes that he went through in order to become.
    A very satisfying listen.
Great intro to the world of Hannibal
I didn't realise this was the first book but I'm glad I purchased and listened. What an intro into the world of Will Graham and Hannibal Lector. The voice actor was well suited to the tone and pleasing to the ear, shame about his interpretation of the female voices, which were a little annoying though.
    The writing is superb.
A classic anyway you look at it no gimmicks just story and literate in a way most crime books are not.

    Title: State vs. Elinor Norton

    Publisher's Summary:
The trial was a media sensation. Right from the start, Elinor Norton had confessed to committing the gruesome murder. But was it the truth? What had actually happened that dark afternoon on her bleak and isolated estate? And when the jury handed in its verdict, would it read guilty or innocent?
    Members Reviews:
Gloom and doom is hard to listen to (3.5 stars really) but it is Rinehart
For die hard Rinehart fans. Do not make this your first Rinehart novel.
I had a difficult time rating this particular novel by MRR. It was so hard to listen to, the unrelenting pending doom that overhangs every chapter. I decided that I could not say I exactly liked it. It is the novel itself that is getting the rating and not the reader, Stephen Hoye, who does a fine job.
This novel does not have a tremendous amount of action. It is mostly conversations and emotions. The conversations are short, the emotions are long and very heavy.
It is a recounting of the life of a character named Elinor Norton, from childhood to the point at which the novel ends, by a male character named Carroll Warner. They were friends from meeting during childhood, despite the disapproval of Elinor's social climbing and cold mother, Caroline. Elinor's father, an ambassador, died when she was very young, leaving her to be raised by her merciless cold mother. There are many villians of different degrees in this novel who contribute to the misery of Elinor's life that ends in her trial of premeditated murder of a man who really deserved to die. Besides her mother, the two chief villians are Lloyd Norton, who Caroline forces Elinor to marry because he has the proper social standing, and the man Elinor eventually kills, Blair Leighton, who takes so much from Elinor and gives her nothing back in return.
Lloyd Norton was never a very good husband but after coming back from serving in the army during WW1, he was even worse. Not insane exactly, but damaged psychically. His ego was destroyed because his ego had depended on his social status which counted for nothing in the army. He had also lost most of his money which had been invested poorly. Lloyd also became convinced that Elinor was cheating on him. He had cheated on her but she had not cheated on him, although she was deeply attracted to Blair Leighton, a perpetual playboy. Lloyd decides he needs to leave NYC and the East Coast to "recover" and hits on the idea to buy a ranch in Montana. He is talked into this by Blair Leighton.
The irony is that Lloyd never suspects Blair Leighton in his ravings about Elinor being unfaithful, that Blair is the biggest threat to him, to Lloyd. All three of them end up in Montana on the ranch. Only Blair is happy there.
The part about the ranch life seems to go on forever. They do not live near any of the bigger cities in Montana (which I have visited), but in some dry desolate remote part of Montana where life was especially hard and lonely in 1920. The first year is somewhat successful for them. The following years are miserable.
When I got to the end, I realised why the author chose to have the character, Carroll Warner, be the first person narrator of the book instead of Elinor, herself. I was glad I had listened to this novel, wading through the sad years of the life of these characters, to the end of the novel. It was not an easy listen, the way many of her other novels are, not fun like many of the others.

    A real cracking story
The storyline keep you hooked from the start, and only get's better and real intense on the way.
"Ripping Yarn" revises our view of Brits in India
The Strangler Vine covers a serious subject, disguised in a rollicking good yarn about the days leading up to the British Raj. Taken simply as a story, its thoroughly enjoyable. I liked Sam Dastor's narration, which seemed vocally accurate and conjured the feel of the period and place well.
This fictional account intrigued me such that I did further reading about the history of the period. Since India's Independence, their historians have rightly taken a fresh look at the British versions of the history of the East India Company and the British Raj. It is not a surprise that they find that the British were somtimes cynical and ruthless in achieving their Colonial ambitions. I have no idea whether the 21st century appraisal of the days of the Thuggee threat are any more accurate than that in British histories, but it seems entirely plausible. Until I read this book, I didnt even know there was a controversy, so I guess it has achieved its job of bringing the subject to a wider audience. But its as a good story that most will enjoy it and I can recommend as such.
One of my most favourite audio books - loved it!
What did you like most about The Strangler Vine?
There's nothing to dislike: there is history, adventure, travel, strong characters, murder and mystery. All set in Victoria's Indian Empire with jewels and opium and dust. Most of all it is about the building of an unlikely friendship between the two main characters.
What about Sam Dastors performance did you like?
I loved his accent and narration. It seems perfect for the place and time in India.
    Any additional comments?
Still waiting for M J Carter's sequel to be turned into an audio book and read by Sam Dastor. Why is it taking so long?!
    Good story
    Any additional comments?
I agree with much of what the previous reviewer said. I came across the book by chance. It was a really good story - although every time the word 'Thugs' was mentioned I could not get our modern day equivalents out of my mind.

Lexi Morgan has always had "The Touch;" the ability to pick up an object and 'see' its past. Doomed to wearing protective gloves at all times, she learned to accept it as equal parts gift and curse. When her brother in law Neil disappears, she'd rather tell her sister to celebrate than try to help find the jerk. But after her young niece vanishes as well, it's time to put her gift to good use and help track her down, especially when handsome Detective Gabriel Ryan takes over the case. When the investigation leads them to the restless spirits of long dead children, they must work together to keep history from repeating itself before it's too late.
    Members Reviews:
A Few Holes, But Pretty Good
Lexi Morgan's hands have an incredible power; when she touches an object it's history is transmuted into her. Her Sister Allison and her husband and child are in the midst of a severe crisis; including living in a haunted house. Lexi's niece Chloe has evidently inherited some paranormal abilities of her own because she is being afflicted by ghosts. When Allie's husband and Chloe's father is found in the trunk of his car, then Chloe goes missing, obviously something is not right in River City. There are huge holes in the plot and bright people doing stupid things for no apparent reason. On the positive side Lexi is a spirited offbeat character and Gabriel the cop isn't too much of a cliche. The narrator Andi Arndt does an excellent job; it's not too strong of a recommendation but it is a recommendation.
Not my style but I liked it!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would tell my friends the concept of the story and let them decide if they want to read it. I'm not big on romance stories but Lisa blends it along with the suspense well.
What other book might you compare The Touch to and why?
None come to mind - as I said, this really isn't my style of book overall so I don't know of any other supernatural romance books.
Which character as performed by Andi Arndt was your favorite?
Detective Cooper. I knew too many of those types of guys in college and she nailed down their blind sense of self worth perfectly in her tone.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. It was a quick and light story that I think I would have enjoyed more than doing my usual routine of listening to audio books while driving over long distances.
    Any additional comments?
This was an interesting blend between supernatural and romance - especially a new/budding relationship. My personal taste would be for more spooky and less romance but for those who enjoy a balanced combination of both, this is a good book.
    the touch
I really enjoyed this book. I found it hard to put down or even take a break. I wish it had a bit more paranormal activity in it, but it was very well written and read.
Another great book from Lisa Olsen
What did you love best about The Touch?
A unique subject matter with a tantalizing bit of romance.
What did you like best about this story?
Loved Gabriel; he seemed so sweet.
Have you listened to any of Andi Arndts other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No

    I Demand A Re-Write to Chapter 71! Grrrrrrrr...
    Any additional comments?
This is such a fantastic WTF is going on mystery, bound with nerve-shaking-suspense, and heart thumping action!
I was completely blown away when the mystery was solved! I honestly listened to this audio in one sitting!! Yep, it was that good!!!
The only reason I did not give this an overall 5 stars is because of the total TEASE of brutal, animalistic, raunchy, dirty, knock down, fight to the excruciating death between two hardened warriors in Chapter 71.
    ************SPOILER ALERT*************
Mr. McKenzie ripped my anxious and excited heart out by its root by completely ending that scene the way he did. I mean, he built that scene up beautifully.
Through out the whole story it was about a man, a regular man fighting for his family against warriors and though entertaining, it's not the same when two warriors who are equally match go to war!! And I was ready for that one on one. Just broke my heart, how he ended that scene!!
Also, I wished there had been a scene where those detectives and men in black d*ck heads had had to apologize (you'll just have to read to know who I'm talking about).
    **************SPOILER ALERT END*******
So, I loved the performance and the story was an extremely well written, action suspense, mystery thriller, well worth the listen!!!!
    Loved the characters
it was a little slow getting into it, but the plot was well developed and kept me guessing. I loved how the main character was an ordinary guy with great character and determination.
    Way to slow
Sometimes I would skip a couple of chapters & didn't feel I missed anything. I mist could not finish this book. I was so bored.
