Not usual Barbara Michaels, still worth a credit
When Barbara Metz/ Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters died I felt I had lost a someone I actually knew. Even her very early work is smart, and funny, if light and still managed to deal with the dark parts of life without being depressing. For example her book the Crying Child has been adapted to film, even though there were no kick-ass heroines. (I love those too). This book is so cynical that reading it is a surprise and difficult to enjoy. Its like biting into a chocolate truffle and getting a mouth full of hot peppers. There is only one character worth admiration in this story, the other female lead is a bit silly and vapid, the hero is narrow minded and vain, and these two are not balanced by sane competent characters. Even the admirable character solves her problems in a way that only desperation would make it ethical.
I began reading Barbara Michaels novels in my early twenties and 50 years later I still reread them from time to time. Under this pen name Barbara Michaels/Barbara Mertz wrote what an old librarian called cozy historical, gothic novels. I love them. Even all those years ago these books were smart, historically accurate and although light, never insulted the reader's intelligence. When she began to write more contemporary and historical mysteries as Elizabeth Peters I loved those too. Barbara Metz earned a doctorate in egyptology at a time when a female doctoral candidate had to be very very good, just to be allowed to apply. So while her books were fun, all of them were historically accurate and made sense. Her Amelia Peabody books are just wonderful.
All of which leads me to this book, and why it is so different from the ones I love to read when I need something cheerful. This is not a story about a hero who admires the spunky, smart heroine, and appreciates the fact that her care of his estates increased his fortune while he was away. Nope. He assumes she is just lucky and begins to spend the money. This book is more realistic and dark than any of her other books. Although I might appreciate the way our heroine handles the problem, the whole thing brought out a cynical sad feeling. I am so disappointed audible chose this book, out of at least twenty of her early books to record. There are early cassette recordings of her early work, so perhaps Audible will be able to give us some of her more usual books. For example the Wings of the Falcon deals with some of the dark sides of history, but also had characters who were not perfect, none of her characters were ever perfect, but they were for the most decent people, who grew into really delightful people
    Well-written and held my interest
This book was written in 1991 by Elizabeth Peters writing as Barbara Michaels. The house, Grayhaven Manor, is located in England and reminded me in the first half of "Jane Eyre." But the second half takes some very unusual turns and any similarities to "Jane Eyre" go out the window.

    McNab's "Brute Force" is rubbish!!!
I was a fan of McNab's Nick Stone series. So when "Brute force" was released, I was keen to read the latest Nick Stone thriller.
I bought "Brute Force" on Audible, but later received the hardcover as gift. I decided to read the book before listening to the audio. After reading the book, I regret buying the audio.
This book is rubbish; the average chapter length is no more than 5 pages. Facts not being checked by the author/editor is illustrated by the following: The main character, Nick Stone, ends up in the Libyan Desert driving an automatic shift Audi Q7, however two chapters later, during a shoot out, the Q7 conveniently `develops' a clutch pedal (which is only possible in a manual shift vehicle)! Mr. McNab, whatever happened to that JB7 and boulder used to block the road? How did it conveniently disappear?
Generally the plot is weak, and re-hash of facts made obvious in all previous books and painstakingly repeated here, which to me, seems like 'padding'. The book seems more like a poorly contrived plot to meet a publisher's deadline or contractual obligation. I reached a point, where I believe that the Nick Stone character has outlived its 'sell by' date. Because McNab starts introducing 'past' facts that were not evident in earlier series, assuming the author wants to maintain that each story is a sequel (since some parts of the story refers to previous adventures)
I wonder who is more stupid, the author for not knowing the difference or the editor/publisher for not realizing this hogwash? Or us readers, for being duped into buying such rubbish? I hope McNab returns to his old style and writes decent stories.
    Brute Force
If you love Nick Stones adventures you'll love this. Not quite the same without Clive reading it but once you get over that the story is just as gripping. My only criticism is the face this is only an abridged version and I think these stories loose far too much. I am now reading the book in paperback to get the full flavour.
    Absolutely awesome
Andy McNab is a genius love his work I have read many of his book and I'm always hanging out for the next one

    Fabulous
Kieth's done it again! Gripping story and narrated by the brillian Sean Barrett makes for great listening. Kieths books should be listened to in sequence so that you don't hear what happened in a previous book that you haven't listened to yet. Google to find out when each book was released
    Great tight writing; excellent narration
I am now on my 5th Keith McCarthy novel in this "mystery" series. He is truly a wonderful writer - witty, concise, and compelling. The reader, Sean Barrett, is completely convincing as every character he reads!
The only reason I don't give 5 stars is because the endings of McCarthy's novels tend to be wrapped up too quickly, and come to a final head a bit too quickly.
Even with this, though, I love these books!
    What a Treat!
Oh Keith! Where have you been all my life!? I adore your writing, I adore ALL your characters, I adore everything about your books. They are smart, funny and have the twistiest plots I've ever heard of.
Marry me and I will give up all my affairs, including but not limited to Capt Von Trapp, Raylan Givens, Jamie Frasier, Walt Longmire and that Sam guy) Okay, if it too soon for that, just let me watch your eyes glitter as you compose your stories. I even want to read the out-takes. I'll bet you can make a grocery list dazzle.
    Excellent book
Excellent well written captivating kept me on the edge of my seat. One of the best forensic murder mistery I have listened too. Highly recommend
    A gripping listen
This really was a cracking listen! Featuring John Eisenmenger and some other favourites it sort of follows on from The Secret Sleep of the Dying, expanding on the characters, continuing their stories whilst entwining a new plot line. Excellent stuff. Well written and building up to the reveal, this is another excellent book. Once again, expertly read by Sean Barrett who masters the voices wonderfully, giving them a life of their own.
The quality and pace of the recording are perfect and there are no noticeable variations along the way.
Since this is my second book I feel I am really getting the measure of
Eisenmenger and his relationships, particularly Helena and Beverley. I found this book brought more flesh to their bones and I am hoping another is available to download.

    Mystery gone missing
In the latest installment of the Mrs. Murphy series, Rita Mae Brown brings you discussions on abortion, the evils of the Republican Party, the evils of politicians in general, relative merits of the BMW vs Mercedes transmissions, the importance of proper Virginia bloodlines for breeding, how to fit into Virginia society if you are not lucky enough to have the proper pedigree, the merits of heat pumps vs. oil burners, the glory of Ford F-150s (but the shilling is less than earlier books), evils of tv and the internet, the differences between the sexes, panty fetishes, the difficulties of veterinary coding for billing and filling, Jeffersonian architecture and the brilliance of animals. What you won't find, sadly, is a mystery of any real significance.
The series has faded from its former glory and so has the heroine, Harry Haristeen. The mystery is tacked on in most places and only rarely is it the focus of the story. Harry continues her roller coaster ride from very intelligent heroine to a stereotypical dimwit who ties herself down on the tracks in front of the proverbial train. Will her animals save her? (Of course they will). Will the enlightened and liberated modern women still need saving by the stud hero? Tired cliches and increasingly one dimensional characters are sadly taking over what were once truly pleasurable reads. They mystery would have made a good short story in length, but it still would have been mundane.
The writing is fundametally good and the debates are often fair if not balanced, but the mystery is what Rick and Coop (the law) should be listing as missing.
Kate Forbes continues to be an excellent narrator.
Bottom line: Don't feed what has become a cash cow unless the quality comes back.
    Way too preachy.....
Way too much time spent having the characters make speeches in support of abortion and planned parenthood and way too little actually involving a mystery.
    Boring
I could not finish listening to this story. It is filled with author opinion on everything from what you should eat and when, T.V., computers, political views, and views on abortion. Yikes-this is NOT interesting or entertaining.
    Author getting too political
Anyone who listens to this series will have gotten the idea that the characters (and author, by association) clearly think that Virginia/Virginians rate higher than anybody else. But that has gotten fanatical in this book.
The author clearly thinks that being a Northener or - God forbid - a Republican is a worse sin than abortion.
I've always liked the Mrs. Murphy books but this one left a very bad taste in my mouth.

    Icy Hot
I've given this book four stars because I loved it and couldn't stop listening to it even though it had so many obvious flaws. Most difficult to ignore were the glaring deficiencies of the narrator who (I think) tried an English accent for one character and, astonishingly, a vaguely Middle Eastern one for the hero who, we're told, was raised in L.A. I still have no idea what she was thinking but the fact that I could focus on the story despite these potential distractions means it must have been a pretty good one.
For readers new to Anne Stuart, she truly excels in creating utterly miserable (but courageous/heroic) heroines who soldier bravely through much adversity before they're rewarded by their climactic release. Always the same - always satisfying. Her heros mangage to walk the line of cruelty without losing their appeal - which I always think is a nice trick. An excellent trick here. Following the principle that many fine cakes can be made of the same recipe - Stuart fans will find this book a tasty creation indeed.
Hooray for Anne Stuart in audio
It is thrilling to finally get Anne Stuart's Ice series in audio format. Black Ice is still my favorite, but the others are also great. I don't see Fire and Ice available in Audible.com, but hope it will be soon. Madame Lambert is my hero, er heroine - a perfect match for the most dangerous man in the world. Hopefully there will be more unabridged audio books by Anne Stuart available soon, hint, hint.
    Thrilling...
Good story; tight pacing; interesting, gritty characters. This is one of several related books; reading the others will give you a better feel for the characters. Anne Stuart always seems to write stories that keep you engrossed in the adventure. I could hardly stop listening at times--even though I knew I needed sleep!
    Riveting
Anne Stuart is a master at taking characters society labels as beyond redemption and making you care for and be attracted to them. Ice Storm is totally absorbing.
    I tried...
The narrirator ruined this for me. Audible should try to pick people who can do the job.

    Really poor
Just a nonsensical series of pointless killings, no rhyme or reason. The whole thing was daft, no drama or suspense. The characters were not particularly well drawn, I just feel that I have wasted 8 hours on rubbish.
    Musik nervt!
Gut gemacht, aber die Musik zur Untermalung nervt echt extrem. Ansonsten wie immer coole Story.
    Superb book
Another fabulous book by James Patterson. Twists and turns throughout. Thoroughly recommend this book. Can't wait to start next one.
Another Hit Thriller spoilt by Musical Interferenc
I have listened to a number of the Alex Cross stories and I have just finished this one. The story was good, even if the ending was a little abrupt. What spoilt it for me was the inclusion of atmospheric music and a change of narrator. I have thoroughly enjoyed Garrick Hagon's performance and did not feel the narration on this one was quite as good. Whoever decided to start adding the music should be shot ! The narrator should be able to build intensity in to the story without the need for terrible musical interference. There, I have got that off my chest now !!
    love this read
A fantastic book in the series,i have read all previous books and i think this is another great read the auther has really bought together modern day terrorist issues into the book gripping at times and great characters and a fantastic narator reading the book definatly a 10 out of 10 book and would highly reccomend it cant wait for the the next read.

"Beloved series character Sid Halley, a champion jockey, makes a welcome return in the latest fast-paced crime novel from bestseller Francis....The writing and action are as crisp as ever." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Great Listen
Sid Halley is back. The one-handed ex-jockey-turned-investigator is at Cheltenham Races on Gold Cup day when three deaths occur: one horse and two jockeys, one of whom is found murdered in the parking lot. Huw Walker's death merely fuels the rumors he was involved in race fixing, and it looks like his boss, trainer Bill Burton, may have done it. When Bill is found dead in his home, the police want to rule his death a suicide, brought about by guilt over having murdered his jockey, but Sid believes Bill was also murdered. When Sid's girlfriend, Dutch beauty Marina van der Meer, is threatened, Sid is certain Huw and Bill were killed by the same person over race fixing, but he's sure there's a bigger reason why. Those he loves are now in harm's way as Sid tracks down clues that lead to a cold-blooded killer.
Dick Francis could write a great book in a coma, and it's obvious he was wide awake when he wrote this. His unique, distinctly English writing style is like sitting down for drinks by the fire with a cherished friend you haven't seen in ages, dear and familiar. As usual, he makes me long to take a tour of every English racetrack on the map, bringing the racing world vividly to life. They mystery was also well-woven, presenting a list of suspects and planting a trail of clues. I was grateful that Dick Francis got back to work, and this book was not a disappointment after the long wait. He's been publishing since before I was born, and I hope he continues to do so for a long time to come.
    Great
I'm a huge Dick Francis fan and this book is excellent. I only wish I can get all of his books on audio.
    Loved it
First novel for 5 years. WOW. I dip in and out of the Dick Francis body of work. A little violence. a touch of sweet revenge. clear cut villans & well crafted hero's and of course, horse racing. Always coupled with a parallel area of interest to engage the reader.
    I love em all.
This is a long awaited book. A Dick Francis classic. Everything is here. Worth the wait, worth the read. Read it and understand why he is revered both here in the UK and in the USA.
If this is your first Dick Francis novel, you are lucky you have a considerable back catalogue to enjoy and appreciate. I wish I was you.
    Briliant as always
Tony is the perfect reader for Dick Frances novels. Keeping the listener enthralled frim beginning to end
    Disappointing
Tony Britton's narration in this production is not his best - I don't think he chose the right voices especially for the female characters and his accents made me cringe.

The narrator seemed to change my impression of the characters
Having started with reading the Templar Legacy to get them in the proper order, my impressions of the characters was set based on my imagination coloring the scenes.
It seemed to me that hearing the book flattened that part of it for me since all characters were "played" by the same narrator.
    Getting worse
This is the latest story involving Cotton Malone - part Indiana Jones and part Robert Langdon...it seems that Berry is writing these stories at too fast a pace as the historical backgrounds get weaker and clues and puzzles the heroes must solve are not nearly as clever as in his earlier works. This story revolves around the Library of Alexandria which apparently not only exists but holds information that could lead to great political instability in the world. The historical tie ins to the story are interesting but not developed very deeply and frustratingly, there is little about what is actually in the library once it is found.
If you like the Cotton Malone character, you will probebly be entertained as usual but the story line itself is believe average for this author. I hope that he takes more time with his next offering and provide a more developed story.

For centuries, Lakelanders have whispered that Fletcher Christian, made infamous by Mutiny on the Bounty, staged the massacre on Pitcairn so that he could return home. And once there, what if he told his story to an old friend and schoolmate, William Wordsworth, who turned it into a long narrative poem - a poem that remained hidden lest it expose Wordsworth to the gallows for harboring a fugitive.
Wordsworth specialist Jane Gresham, herself a native of the Lake District, feels compelled to discover once and for all whether the manuscript ever existed and whether it still exists today. But as she pursues each new lead, death follows hard on her heels. Suddenly, Jane is at the heart of a 200-year-old mystery that still has the power to put lives on the line.

Sort of like AS Byatt's Possession,
This book pleasantly reminded me of A.S. Byatt's Possession, which I loved (and you should go get, if you haven't read it yet.) Like Byatt's book, this book plays on a literary mystery, bringing together the mystery of the mutiny on the bounty with the life of William Wordsworth and a modern-day search for documents that could make or break careers, and be worth a small fortune to the owners. I am an English professor (of American literature, however), so I love this stuff, if it's done well, and this one is.
Sometimes detective fiction seems to approach non-straight characters almost with tongs and a crinkled nose, so I especially like about this book is that gay and lesbian characters are included as a matter of course (although the central character is straight), and they are fully human.
Finally, I don't know where the other reviewer got the idea that this is Christian fiction (must have been a mis-characterization based on the name Christian Fletcher). Obviously, this is not a "Christian" text, thank heavens, and the language is suited to the areas that the people are coming from and the lives they are leading.
(And I suspect Christ hung out with a lot of people whose language was deemed crude--ironically, in fact, St. Augustine rejected Christianity for a long time simply because the Gospels were written in such a crude, street language, not the Classical Greek he was trained to respect. End of sermon!)
    Ehhh so-so
Val McDermid writes some great books that I love; this isn't one of them. I give her credit for an imaginative idea...Fletcher Christian in a British village mystery. But it's just boring. I didn't care a whit about the characters and some situations were out of character as well. I really didn't care who the killer was and the ending was ... "oh how convenient."
    I don't really recommend it.
    Disappointing
The rated category was misleading. This is not a good representation of Christian authorship. I was very disappointed as the content which was filled with ill advised use of crude language.
