Great Characters

You really get a good feel for each of the characters in the story. The narrator does an excellent job. The story was much better than I was actually expecting. Buy it and you'll enjoy it. Lots of neat suprises.

Mediocre-Predictable

The story was predictable, I guessed the ending, 1/2 way through.

It also moved very slowly. I felt that it could have been cut in 1/2.

I didn't find the protagonists to be sympathetic or their characters built up very well, on the other hand I just didn't see it moving quickly enough to be an action book.

To give it credit, I did listen to it until the end which I wouldn't have done if it was truly awful.

Fun, Great Who done it!

Fun, Great who done it story. I enjoyed the story but, I think Carolyn Hart is a great enough author to be able to find better words to describe anger, frustration, etc then dam.

The characters are great fun strong personalities, characters we can understand and root for. I recommend it, but still think that thinking out better words will improve the story.

Maybe it was an experiment that humored Lawrence Block but I found the narration abrasive and distracting. I still listened, after I listened to everything else I had in my library and it was great, typical Matt Scudder.

Monotone reading with weird background noise

Besides the monotone narration, this audio book also has some barely audible (by me) unintelligible babbling noise in the background. Listening to it was like the old days of bad land line telephone calls that picked up noise from other conversations, radio stations, or even running sewing machines or wood working machinery. Very nostalgic but it detracted from the listening experience.

Narration is Awful

I hesitate to condemn the entire book based solely on the narrator's (lack) of performance. But, it was that bad. For me, that's saying something. Usually, I can get wrapped up in a book and overlook less than stellar narration. In this case, however, the reader's monotone killed the whole experience for me.

Bad audio, boring story

This story is so boring. The narrator tries to make the best of it, but with this poor quality audio its an impossible task...from time to time it sounds as if she is reading over the phone, or worse. Not recommended

SILENT SNOW

From the beginning to the end, I was totally mesmerized. I listen to my audible.com books in my car and looked for reasons to go places just to listen to this one. The theory he espoused is so plausible, it is hard to keep in one's mind that this is a work of fiction. I heartily recommend this book to avid mystery readers.

Silent Snow

Steve Thayer is a master at weaving intricate details and multiple plots with location. This book is difficult to stop listening to like The Weatherman. It's a wonderful mystery which makes the reader want to listen to more and more of his great work.

Astonishingly good!

I bought this book with an Audible coupon -- never heard of the author, but I grew up in that part of the country and thought it might be interesting. I was so surprised by what a great book this is -- and confounded that I hadn't heard of Steve Thayer before.

It's extremely well done, a tale of two kidnappings, the story of the famous kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby and another recreated in modern times, with the child of a very popular TV news anchor. I didn't remember much of the story of the Lindbergh kidnapping, but the historical parts, intersperced with the contemporary drama, was really well done. The scenes at Fort Snelling were so tense I had to stop what I was doing and just listen.

The whole audio production was marvelous, with the tinkling speakeasy music to introduce the historical parts, plus a great narrator. I hated for this book to end.

Literary Genius

Steve Thayer takes the mystery genre and turns it into literary greatness. This book is spellbinding in its intricacies. The manner in which Thayer weaves the real Lindbergh kidnapping case with his fictionalized version leaves me amazed at his talent. By the time the book comes to an end, you will feel you've been through an ordeal, albeit a good one.

One note: The audio is muffled and causes the listener to miss passages. If possible, this should be corrected. David Birney works so hard and the sound quality thwarts him often.

Very interesting story.

What made the experience of listening to Un Extranjero en el Espejo (A Stranger in the Mirror) the most enjoyable?

The way Jill and Toby were able to progress in life. Quite sad to hear how good persons turn to be bad ones because of ambition and success.

3 Black Supernatural stories by 3 authors.

Would you listen to The Ancestors again? Why?

I enjoyed all 3 stories. The first ended abruptly but it was a good story, I just wanted more. Black history integers me, then through in some supernatural and I'm hooked. Narration in all 3 stories was fantastic.

Tananarive Due saves it

The first two stories we're ok.. the 2nd better than the first. I would have abandon this audible if it wasn't for the knowledge that I would be gifted with a story by Due. She didn't disappoint, the story and performance were awesome, Robin Miles is fantastic and engaging . . I give Due and Miles a solid 5 stars.. The others a 3 star.

Not what I expected

Would you recommend The Ancestors to your friends? Why or why not?

Probably not - I listened to The Good House by Tananarive Due and loved it so I thought these 3 short stories would be similar. They were not. I think they would have been better as full stories/books.

Darkly Heartbreaking

Throughout this story I experienced a sense of foreboding, knowing from the prologue that something dark had happened, but with none of the details. The story is told in retrospective by the younger brother, Jonathan, who relates his life, especially in regards to his relationship with his older but mentally handicapped brother Roger, and his love for Harriet. The narrative takes its time, telling anecdotal stories of their childhood, teen years and young adult years with details that on the surface may seem insignificant, but successfully painting a picture of each character so we feel we know them in a reasonably intimate way. When unexpected and unexplainable events happen, we begin to doubt, or at least wonder if our perceptions of the three principal characters are true. This is where the foreboding builds, as it becomes clear that the ship is heading for the iceberg and nothing can turn the boat around.

What makes this story compulsively readable to me is the quality of the writing. As Jonathan tells his story, there is a ring of authenticity in the emotions that drive the actions. You cant approve of everything he does, and the characters are shown with all their flaws.

Another Excellent Dan Simmons Book

I've been reading Dan Simmons for years. I had read Hardcase years ago before the audio version was available and loved it. I just finished listening to the audiobook version and it was fantastic from start to finish. I've already purchased the next book in the series, Hard Freeze, and look forward to listening to that. Hardcase features an exciting story, excellent fleshed out characters and even good villains. Joe Kurtz is a no nonsense hardboiled detective. The people in the story act and talk like you'd expect real people and the narration was perfect. Hardcase reminds me very much of the style of writing and characters you'd find in a really good Elmore Leonard novel (examples include Gold Coast, Stick, Swag and Mr. Paradise). Other Dan Simmons audiobooks I've enjoyed (multiple times each) include: Flashback, Illium and Carrion Comfort. The Joe Kurtz series is new to audio and I hope he releases Joe Kurtz #3 soon.

Just more really good Dan Simmons

I've read most of his works and have not been let down yet. Hardcase has simply obligated me to buy all the Joe Kurtz "hard" to put down reads.

Not believable in the slightest but incredible fun

Joe Kurz is a very straight-forward ex-Private Investigator; jailed for a decade for a revenge killing he most willingly committed and whom we join as he is released back into the world of 2001 (I think) to restart life on the outside. Subsequently a *lot* of characters get involved and a surprising number of events occur in what is a pretty short story (6 hours of audio, 300ish pages). The characters are mostly the ones you expect to find in a detective story but there are some surprising gems like Pruno and Soul Dad.

This is Dan Simmons' (of Hyperion fame) foray into the hardboiled detective-noir genre. I wasn't sure what to expect from him in this genre, mostly that's why I read it, to see what he did after his science fiction triumphs.
