easy to follow story and carries on nicely from previous story BUT really disappointed with the actual story itself.
Hope in the next book the story is more exciting.
Good story, shame about the performance.
Unnecessary and annoying pauses in the narration that should really have flowed seamlessly made listening less enjoyable than it should have been.

    Publisher's Summary:
From Shanghai to Honolulu to Manchuria, the third chapter in the adventures of Imperial Japan's top secret agent is an international thrill ride. Wilson Hitchings is ready to assume his rightful place at Hitchings Brothers, one of the oldest mercantile banks in China. His first task takes him to Hawaii, where he must persuade his cousin Eva to close Hitchings Plantation, a gambling establishment started by her father, the black sheep of the family. The senior members of the bank believe that the casino is tarnishing the venerable Hitchings name. Little do they know how right they are. Unbeknownst to Eva, her father's establishment has become a key strand in a web of political and financial intrigue stretching all the way to the Far East. When Wilson uncovers the plot and realizes just how much danger he and Eva are in, he has no choice but to trust Mr. Moto, a Japanese spymaster who claims to be in Honolulu on a similar mission. But with a remorseless killer and a cast of shady international characters tracking their every move, this unlikely trio might be facing odds far too long to beat. First serialized in the Saturday Evening Post, John P. Marquand's popular and acclaimed Mr. Moto Novels were the inspiration for eight films starring Peter Lorre.
    Members Reviews:
    a very, very pleasant surprise
Being a fan of old 1930's murder mystery movies, such as the Chans and the Thin Man, I was eager to get acquainted with Mr. Moto when the series was recently released on DVD. I was not disappointed. Most of the movies held up quite well. The second set of movies included an interesting biography of John P. Marquand, the author of the original Moto novels. That led to a curiosity to read one of the mysteries. While Marquand's stories are not complicated as mysteries go, he does have an ability to draw engaging multi-dimensional characters with a swipe of the pen. Having been to the Orient himself during the time he is writing about, he describes Shanghai and Honolulu before World War II so well that you see each scene vividly. Interestingly enough, though the movies depart drastically from the plots of the novels, the character of Moto played by Peter Lorre seems exactly right as you follow Moto in the novel. In fact, I think Lorre may have injected even more inscrutable Oriental mystery into Moto than Marquand himself. For those of us who like a bit of history along with the murder, this is an entertaining read.
All of Marquand's Mr. Moto novels are great
This is the third of the six Mr. Moto spy novel by John P. Marquand. It was published in 1936, prior to World War II, and was able to portray a somewhat favorable relationship between the US and Japan. A film with this name was released in 1937. It starred Peter Lorre as Mr. Moto, but in the film he is not a Japanese government agent as he is in this and the other Marquand books and the plot is different as well.
As in other Marquand Mr. Moto books, the principle character in the tale is an American, not Mr. Moto. And, as in the other novels, the American meets a beautiful woman. The American is a member of a highly respected family of merchants who have been involved in business for generations. He is new to the business and is working in China under the tutelage of his uncle. One day, Mr. Moto, a Japanese official, comes to the family business and obliquely tells them to stop helping a certain person.

    Publisher's Summary:
When private detective Sam Blackman agrees to help his partner and lover, Nakayla Robertson, conduct a fundraiser for orphaned twins, he does so to ease his conscience. The boys' parents were killed in a courtroom shootout where Sam was the key witness against the twins' father. The charity event, a nighttime ghost tour of the legendary haunted sites of Asheville, North Carolina, seems harmless enough. Sam only has to tell the story of a grief-stricken woman who hanged herself from an old, arched stone bridge. "Helen, come forth," he cries. Sam and his tourgoers expect the actress playing Helen's ghost to walk toward them from the bridge's dark recesses. Instead, her body tumbles from overhead and dangles at the end of a noose. Someone has reenacted the legend with deadly authenticity.
When a second murder mimics another old ghost tale, the police fear a macabre serial killer is on the prowl. But the case isn't Sam's to solve. Then, a tidal wave of evidence begins to point to one man - Sam's friend, defense attorney Hewitt Donaldson. Sam and Nakayla, firmly believing in Donaldson's innocence, must not only prove it but halt a murderer seemingly bent on retribution. Does the killer's motivation rise from the present, or is Team Donaldson dealing with some specter from the past?

    Title: The Age of Reinvention

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
An international best seller and finalist for the Prix Goncourt, France's most prestigious literary award, The Age of Reinvention is a suspenseful Gatsbian tale of a famous New York lawyer whose charmed and glamorous life is a sham.
Top Manhattan criminal defense attorney Sam Tahar seems to have it all: fame, fortune, an enviable marriage to a prominent socialite, and two wonderful children. But his success is built on a lie - he isn't the person he pretends to be.
Growing up a poor Tunisian immigrant, crammed inside the walls of a grimy Paris apartment tower, Samir Tahar seemed destined for life as either a drug dealer or a delivery man - until he decided "he was going to cut through the bars of his social jail cell, even if he had to do it with his teeth". At law school in Montpelier, France, he became fast friends with Jewish student Samuel Baron. The two were inseparable until the irresistible Nina, torn between the men, ultimately chose Samuel. Samir fled to America, where he assumed Samuel's identity and background while his former friend remained stuck in a French suburb, a failed, neurotic writer seething at Samir's overseas triumphs.
Decades later, the three meet again in this dark, powerful story of a deeply tangled love triangle that becomes subsumed by the war on terror. Called "a masterful novel...unquestionably one of the season's best" (Paris Match) and "a work of great magnitude" (Le Figaro), The Age of Reinvention is an intriguing tale about the wonderful possibilities and terrible costs of remaking oneself.

    Hated the Characters
This could have been an interesting book. Poor French Muslim steals identity (and girl) of his best friend in college, marries filthy rich Jewish American socialite, pretends to be Sephardic Jew, sleeps with a lot of people, identity comes out. Stuff happens.
However, all - yes ALL - of the characters are one-dimensional stereotypes. All the women are beautiful and allegedly brilliant, but since all of them are passive vessels for male sexual dominance and have no opinions to utter (sometimes this is painted as some mysterious passiveness, but mostly they're empty and decorative containers), they are boring. The men are thugs - whiny intellectual thugs, slick and gorgeous well-dressed rich lying thugs, or violent, gangsta-rapping actual thugs. None of them has a lick of personality.
I stuck it out for 2/3 of the book hoping something interesting would happen, but these people are both completely repellent AND dull. Who cares what happens to them?
    great writing
What did you love best about The Age of Reinvention?
    Great turns of phrase
Who was your favorite character and why?
No character is without flaws or virtues here.
What does George Newbern bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The reader seems to really understand the authors intent.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Reversals and re-reversals of fortune-Charles Dickens meets F. Scott Fitzgerald
    Any additional comments?
    Sequel?!
    pure trash
Half way through stopped in disgust. Why spend my free time on a book that dwells on sick deviated people with no morals.

    Don't hesitate....
Took me a chapter or two to get into, but then it was compulsive listening.
Characters you can buy into and a story line just involved enough to keep you guessing.
A book that leaves you feeling bereft when it ends is worth 5 stars.
    Off to find the next.
    This is a fabulous story
What did you like most about Alone in the Dark?
I loved the intricate plot with its twists and turns
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the tight suspense and the well-rounded characters. She draws such defined word pictures that I can clearly imagine all of the main characters.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
This was a really hard choice but I think that the scene in the hospital waiting room when everyone is awaiting news of Stone I think
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Things are never as they seem, people are never who you think
    Any additional comments?
This second book in the Cincinnati series is well up to the usual high standard set by the other series she has done. The many interesting characters in this book lead me to hope that there are more books in this series to come.
    Another great read
Another great book in the series. It's long but it keeps you gripped all the way though. The characters build through the books so you do really need to read them in order to get the most out of them. If you like books by Nora Roberts you'll like Karen Rose.
Had to give up - too sickly sweet!
I loved the first book in this series and whilst this one had great subject matter I had to give up on it. The saccharine sweet perfection of the main protagonists were too much to stomach! Constant tales of saintly good deeds, lumps in the throat and hair sniffing just made me want to barf. It totally destroyed any interest I had in them as they were TOO perfect to be believable. I fear this one has crossed the line into Mills and Boon and it's put me off completely. I absolutely acknowledge this is likely to be my own cynicism rather than any fault with the Story or characters but there it is. Shame because the subject is heavyweight and interesting.
good storyline, too much cursing and sex scenes
What did you like most about Alone in the Dark?
The author worked the storyline really well.

Full of shocks, intensity and suspense from first minute to last, Banquet of Consequences reveals Lynley and Havers under pressure.
The suicide of William Goldacre is devastating to those left behind. But what was the cause of his tragedy, and how far might the consequences reach? Is there a link between the young man's leap from a Dorset cliff and a horrific poisoning in Cambridge?
Following various career-threatening misdemeanours, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers is desperate to redeem herself. So when a past encounter with best-selling feminist writer Clare Abbott and her pushy personal assistant, Caroline Goldacre, gives her a connection to the Cambridge murder, Barbara begs DI Thomas Lynley to let her pursue the crime.
Soon Lynley finds himself investigating the London end of an ever more darkly disturbing case while Havers and DS Winston Nkata look behind the peaceful façade of country life to discover a twisted world of desire and deceit.
    Members Reviews:
    Less exciting than other titels
What did you like best about A Banquet of Consequences? What did you like least?
I liked the narrator, Julie Teal, but I didn't like the book itself, the way the story develops. Too much so-called psychological insights that didn't add anything extra to the characters.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
It was a typical case of "I thought so".
Could you see A Banquet of Consequences being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
It probably will be made into one or two episodes of the Inspector Linley series by the BBC. Then it will be much more exciting because of the great acting.
    Yippee! Barbara Havers is back!
Everyone knows the BEST thing in the Elizabeth George books is Barbara Havers, and in this book she back in her full glory. Of course, so is Isabel--whom we all hate--and Deirdre, Thomas Lynley's new love interest--what's with her? I haven't figured her out yet.
The first death doesn't occur until 6 hours into the book. But that was OK because there was enough Barbara in those first 6 hours to keep me interested.
Anyway, if you love the Thomas Lynley mysteries, you will be happy to know this one is back to the old formula, with Barbara getting herself into all kinds of trouble, but then redeeming herself at the end.

    Publisher's Summary:
Big secrets run deep. Former FBI agent Jack McBride took the job as chief of police for Stillwater, Texas, to start a new life with his teenage son, Ethan, away from the suspicions that surrounded his wife's disappearance a year earlier. With a low crime rate and a five-man police force, he expected it to be a nice, easy gig; hot checks, traffic violations, some drugs, occasional domestic disturbances, and petty theft. Instead, within a week he is investigating a staged murder-suicide, uncovering a decades' old skeleton buried in the woods, and managing the first crime wave in 30 years. For help navigating his unfamiliar, small-town surroundings, Jack turns to Ellie Martin, one of the most respected women in town - her scandal-filled past notwithstanding.
Despite Jack's murky marriage status and the disapproval of Ethan and the town, they are immediately drawn to each other. As Jack and Ellie struggle with their budding relationship, they unearth shattering secrets long buried and discover the two cases Jack is working, though 50 years apart, share a surprising connection that will rattle the town to its core.

    Love Texas Stories!
I would recommend this book to those who love hearing about small town living in the State of Texas. I have spent a great deal of time in some of the small towns and realized the descriptions of town life, characters and personalities are pretty close to the truth in "Stllwater". Everybody knows everybody, the good, bad and ugly of small town life, but regardless of things and situations faced in day-to-day life is something that can grab your heart and never let it go! I still long for my last days to be lived out in my old college town in West Texas. The scenes are quite accurate and you can really visualize the towns people, cozy stores and easy living. Looking for more good books like this one!
    Stillwater rages....
Stillwater, by Melissa Lenhardt was as good as the reviews I read. Jack McBride and his son Ethan move to the small town of Stillwater, where Jack has taken the job of police chief. Expecting things in the small town town to be quiet, Jack is in for quite a shock when a murder occurs just hours after arriving in Stillwater. Things go from bad to worse as Jack and Ethan try settling into their new home.
I don't want to give away any more of the plot, so you will just have to read or listen to the book. The narrator did a very good job bringing the small town characters to life. I don't usually like a male narrator trying to do the voice of a woman, but Willian Dufris did an excellent job.
I hope there will be additional books with Jack McBride and Ellie, as they had a very strong attraction going and I want to see where it will lead.
    An unsuccessful attempt
The author of this "mystery" was trying for a police procedural + romance. It was mostly romance, and the police work suffered. I liked the narration, but the book itself, not so much. One word review - poor.
Perfect story for a soap opera
Really enjoyed this story, the characters were well developed, and we have met everyone of them in our own lives. The sanity or insanity of the people we brush shoulders with everyday are in this book...the events in this book could have happened yesterday or next week. Try the book out I think you'll enjoy what you hear.

    Terrible narrator
I am sure the story is better than what I've rated it but the narrator's "performance" was flat, dead, boring. Just listening to the opening dedication put me off. Sound quality not good either.
    Great book
I was gifted this lovely book with the promise of a honest review. I loved this book and the narrator did a wonderful job too. This is the first Spider book for me and I will be checking out more b this author.
Spider Latham is Back! And He's Better than Ever!
Where does Trouble at the Red Pueblo rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I loved listening to Trouble at the Red Pueblo because Liz Adair has such a great talent of painting a picture with her very descriptive words. The writing is excellent and I didn't want to stop listening. It was Riveting.
It's fun to have the story take place in locations that I have been in Southern Utah, Arizona and Nevada.
What other book might you compare Trouble at the Red Pueblo to and why?
It's a great addition to the rest of the Spider Latham books.
Have you listened to any of Tanya Millss other performances before? How does this one compare?
Tanya Mills did a superb job of narrating the story. Her performance made this truly a first class product.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Spider Latham's web of relationships solves the case.
    Any additional comments?
I recommend this audio book to anybody who likes mysteries. It's a fun story.

    MY TAKE
This was the third work I've read by Adair. I'm not normally a mystery person, but I find her storytelling and characters so fun, I've changed my mind if she's the author. Spider is such a fun (and flawed) guy, and I love his relationship with his wife. I'm going to have to go back and read the Christmas novella again now that I know Amy better. And the first three books. I hope they're in audiobook.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Suspense
    Publisher's Summary:
Two brothers, John and William Rother, live together at Chalklands Farm in the beautiful Sussex Downs. Their peaceful rural life is shattered when John Rother disappears and his abandoned car is found. Has he been kidnapped? Or is his disappearance more sinister - connected, perhaps, to his growing rather too friendly with his brother's wife?
Superintendent Meredith is called to investigate - and begins to suspect the worst when human bones are discovered on Chalklands farmland. His patient, careful detective method begins slowly to untangle the clues as suspicion shifts from one character to the next.
    Members Reviews:
I couldn't connect with Superintendent Meredith
While as easy listen and in no way terrible, I missed having a connection Superintendent Meredith, the primary detective investigating the murders. He is not a well developed character. I wanted to know more about his family (his interesting, eccentric son pops up once or twice), about his likes and dislikes (other than his need to eat meals on schedule), and his background. For me, he suffered from not having a regular partner/sidekick. He also spent too much time going over the various murder theories in his head and not enough time investigating them. His superior had to keep bringing him back on track and pushing him towards a resolution. That said, the plot was interesting, although I did figure out the who and the why, though not all the twists in the how, long before the end of the story.
Very Enjoyable for Murder and Whatnot.
This was very enjoyable. I should point out that the John Bude mysteries are quite dated, and are not especially fast-paced or sophisticated, but I think that is their charm. And they are very well written. I enjoyed parsing the chalk and lime setting, and figuring out what "the hillman" was. (I thought it was some type of person, like the gamekeeper or the crofter.) I congratulated myself for guessing the scenario, but there was still another detail that quite surprised me. If you enjoy vintage things, and cozy mysteries, you will like this one. I should point out that Gordon Griffin's narration here is far superior to the other narrator. Griffin has great timing, and is very good at interpreting the various local types, especially a character or two with "wheezes" and vocal peculiarities. A mystery that won't disturb your sleep.
    Keep looking
This was actually tiresome to listen to. Even if the detective had been brilliant and the plot fascinating, the writing has very little descriptive element. You feel as though conversations and events are just methodically strung together. Also, this is the first time I've ever felt sorry for a detective because of how daft he is. You'll figure out the solution at least an hour before the story ends and wonder what the detective is doing. For example, when a fake confession is discovered and proven to be a fraud, he muses about who would have written the letter and why. Um, the real murderer wrote it, obviously, and this should be a huge clue as to who did it and why. There are dozens of moments like this. And dozens of convenient coincidences. At the end of the story, the detective, who has just discovered the murderer of an innocent man, talks about how part of him might be glad that this murderer can't be brought to justice because greed and other evil motives are just part of the human condition. What? Trust me.

    A light and enjoyable story
My sister's secret is a story of love conflict and secrets from the past.
The author describes the characters surroundings in great detail particularly when exploring the beautiful submerged forests, helping you to imagine you are there. This is what I enjoyed the most.
The characters are easily identifiable and likeable. The narrator does very well in bringing them alive.
All in all, a light and enjoyable listen. It kept me guessing til the end where the most unexpected twist is revealed.
I found myself trying to solve the mystery when I wasn't listening and sad when it came to an end. Signs of a great story.
    Excellent read really enjoyed
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Was an excellent read flowed really well even though going between mother and daughter
What was one of the most memorable moments of My Sister's Secret?
    Great twist at the end
    Snail Paced Stiry
This was almost bordering on tedium.A story that lacked pace and soul.
The characters all lack depth, there isn't one character you really like, they are all insipid.
I bought this book for all the positive reviews it got!
It goes on and on and on about the past. They all led incredibly small and shallow lives.
There is twist that you are unlikely to get...... But you are well past caring when it comes.
    Great story
loved this ..worth reading ..twist and turns set in a beautiful location
a book to read on a sunny beach
    Engaging, Infuriating, Touching
This book will keep you interested enough to see it to the end. However, I think you will find Willow's seemingly, reckless non-chalant behaviour/attitude irritating; while also feeling infuriated with her mother's (Charity's) indecisiveness and her Aunt Hope's uncooperative secretive behaviour. The story drags on longer than necessary and is a little predictable in some respects. However, I found the story built up to a satisfactory conclusion given the secrets, betrayal and deceit especially for Niall who I think was the real victim in all this.
