My first experience with Raven William's work, and I'm glad it wasn't my last.

*** I received a free ARC copy in exchange for a fair and honest review. ***

Most people find an author with their first book, or somewhere in the middle of a series. I found Raven Williams through a Facebook takeover event. I'd seen a few of her covers every now and then before, but hadn't really pursued them. Yet, something told me when I ran across a request for ARC readers to help make sure it was clean.

So, though I've been posting the books in chronological order, this was really my introduction to Raven's work. And, what an introduction it was.

Like with all of her books, Raven does a wonderful job in building up the settings for her stories. There were a few stylistic choices I nit-picked on, but after reading her other books, I can see why she made those choices.

The characters also were well developed. A few places where they tried to become scenery, rather than vibrant participants, but that may have been because of the format, rather than developmental issues.

The overall pace of the story was handled well. Because this is a novella, there were a few places where the plot overshadows the characters, or the characters overshadow the plot. Yet, through it all, nothing ever felt rushed or like it lagged. Since this was my first encounter with the nomenclature, I did have a few minor issues at first keeping track of who was where and doing what. However, by the end of the book I was well, and truly, captivated.

Though most series requires the books be read in order, this book is almost completely self-contained. (Warning, however - read the others before if you can, just to make remembering the names easier.) While not a full five star read for me, in retrospect, I have no problem giving it 4.5 out of 5. Even after several months of trying to turn my brain to mush with classwork, I can still vividly remember bits and pieces of the story, and am looking forward to going back and reacquainting myself with the characters and situations played out in this installment.

Books

I encourage you to buy this and any other of her works... she is a great writer

Great Novella!

Really enjoyed this companion novella! Finally, we see the beginnings of Earth in more detail and how the High Elves came to live on Earth and died there, leaving other elves and guardians. The whole term mixed blood comes from the intermarriage of the Guardians and Elves.

You owe me some sleep...

Heavily laced with Christian allegory, the Rise of the Magi is a fast paced adventure involving an alliance of the most unlikely friends-

Myles a famous con man whose abilities rival those of Houdini and Dillinger, Omar, a world renown scientist and inventor bent on saving his sister, Sebastian, a strange alien believer from the world of Soterian, and Kasey, an assassin that we meet halfway through the book.

Myles and Omar jump through portals on different continents and end up in a world of mazes and tunnels, thrust together and trying to survive. But with their combined resources and abilities they quickly overcome every obstacle, and form the Order of the Magi.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced adventure, through multiple worlds populated by all kinds of fantastic creatures and enemies from demons and giant spiders to creatures like fairies. The amazing cover art by Jin Kim didn't detract from the experience in the slightest.

I finished the last third of this book in one sitting, I found it too gripping to put down. That ran very late into the night. I don't know how I'm going to get back that sleep you lost me, Randy. 5 Stars.

Interesting premise...

I donât remember when I ordered this book, possibly found it as a temporary freebie. The story starts with an interesting premise involving dreams and different worlds, but I found the writing a bit lackluster and in desperate need of editing, which ultimately detracted from the reading experience. I have two more books that I believe are sequels but am not entirely sure I want to wade through them if the writing is the same.

I enjoyed this novel in several ways

As a time travel fan, I enjoyed this novel in several ways. The character development is well done with good details on background, and descriptions which helped me visualize.

A family favorite!

This is the second copy of this book I've owned. The original sadly fell apart after years of reading. In addition to me reading and re-reading it, two of my kids love the book and have done the same. So, eventually, I had to purchase a second copy. We've just started the cycle over again, because my oldest has realized I have a new copy, and I've promised to hand it off to her after I've read it again. I've seriously considered giving copies of this book as presents to my teen and preteen family members. Can't recommend it highly enough.

The characterization is well-done. There aren't two-dimensional characters in this book. You can picture the awkward, uncertain Larana...the strong but tortured and shamed Torren, lost in the cracks between two worlds...brash, protective Sal...sweet, devoted, and strong Micca...and so forth. It's not a small group of characters, but you won't get lost in the crowd either. You really feel for the characters and their aims. These people, though we see them from Torren's POV, are complex, with their own goals, biases, and fears. When Torren doesn't know something, Gloria Oliver doesn't slip out of deep third to tell you. It simply becomes an issue for Torren to consider, and in this story of deception and betrayal, there are few people Torren can trust completely.

The world is fantastic, lush with lore, history, and well-written visuals. Oliver shows us the world and lets us experience the wonder as Torren rediscovers it through fresh eyes. It's also got great culture clash, since the Landers and the Flyers have such very different societies and mores, and they each have outlandish stories about the others...humorously so.

The plot is intricate and without continuity errors. As I said earlier, there are lies within lies, distrust, betrayal, and all manner of dangers outside of that as well.

There is not a romantic interest in the book, though there are glimmers of what MIGHT someday become a romance, which is nice.

To be honest, I would LOVE to see something more from this world, to revisit the characters years later, but I understand that the story has come to a satisfying ending. Well done!

Lovely!

I finished Vassal of El in one day, less than one day, actually. I fell in love with the world, the characters, the mythology, the interactions between the two major races. Definitely recommend this book!

Not impressed

This was not a book, more like an essay. I fail to understand why people bother writing a few pages on some subject, publish it and refer to it as a book. I wasn't impressed with this book, it lacked everything a good book should have; a strong plot, good characterization, structure, an interesting start, a strong middle and a cliff hanger ending. It definitely wasn't entertaining nor was it my kind of book. A very disappointing read. EK

Goodreads First Reads Winner!

Firstly, I won this book as a Good Reads First Reads contest winner. Thanks to Scott for sending this out. (Oh, I also wouldn't say I hated it, but I didn't like it enough to still give it one star.)

So sadly there just isn't much here to review. The story itself is less then 30 pages and not in-depth by any means. Apparently from a quick web search the the second to this book has been completed. I may suggest combining them and perhaps the next few stories into one book?

The story itself felt like a poorly played out role-play between two characters on a World of Warcraft Role Playing Realm (if you don't know what that is consider yourself lucky). At times...Most of the time... the language was annoying with lots of first person observations (lots of I's), at times statement repetition and other times I felt as if a thesaurus was used then hastily discarded. I couldn't figure out if this was a creative high school writing project/essay or as I said previously something taken out of a game/fantasy world of someone else's. The dialogue was pretty bad, it got the story across but bordering on stupid as well as too formal. The characters were, let's say, dim-witted and completely unable to come out of their pre-disposed character sheets an Elf, who talks to animals/plants and hates demons. Then a human "sentinel" with a 3-star blade who is part of an apparent female only clan, healer, etc (any of this sounding familiar?) it's nothing that hasn't been said before.

I just really don't feel I can give a FULL fair review of it as I don't think it was a book. It was a short story, that's it. The story left so much still unexplained and hanging that I really felt as if I shouldn't have picked it up since there was absolutely zero conclusion to any of the plot problems. This isn't fair to any reader.
