An enjoyable but rushed and incomplete conclusion
"Dragon War" is the second and final book in the "Land Between the Rivers" saga. Written by Mark Acres, Dragon War's story continues the journeys of the pudgy little thief named Bagsby and his companions Shulana the female elven mage, George and enemy deserter soldier and Marta a vengeful war refugee. Having successfully "acquired" the Golden Eggs of Parona Bagsby and friends set out to deliver them to the Elven Preserve where the ancient Elven Covenant will determine their fate. Bagsby of course being the roguish sort has his own agenda much to the surprise of his companions. Here are my thoughts on Dragon War;
Pros
+ Engaging prologue and back teaser.
+ Explains the backstory well, not necessary to have read the first book.
+ Author clearly draws ideas from the Dungeons & Dragons RPG.
+ Adult fantasy theme. Note: Some things may not please more sensitive readers. Examples include decapitation & throat slitting.
+ Enjoyed the concept of Elves warring with Dragons for centuries.
+ Non stereo-typical characters with the heroes who often walk the line between right and wrong. Favorites were Bagsby, Shulana and Valdaimon.
+ Author provided a description of the world's pantheon and the portfolio's the gods encompassed (War, Harvest, Death etc.).
+ Detailed descriptions of characters make it easy to visualize them.
Cons
- Serious plot hole is overlooked. At the end of Dragonspawn, the rogue Nebuchar crushes and kills Valdaimon's crow familiar yet at the very beginning of Dragon War his crow is alive, well and spying on Bagsby again. It makes no sense and it's never explained. It really bothered me and I'm not sure how the author could have overlooked this.
- Abrupt and lackluster ending. It felt extremely rushed and the end battle was virtually non-existent.
- The dragons have bland names. Scratch and Lifefire.
- Some of the most interesting factions/people/things are never used or underutilized. Examples include the League of the Black Wing, the reborn dragons, Valdaimon's magic, priests of the Holy Alliance etc..
- Author uses the name Elrond as the "common" name for one of the oldest elves in the realm while his "true" name is Lelolan.
- It's unknown what happens to the evil despot Prince Ruprecht or his general Culdus.
- Bagsby and Shulana's relationship just feels odd if not a bit forced.
- No world map, yet the author clearly spelled out the majority of the land. I felt not including a map was a miss.
Dragon War ended up being rather disappointing considering how much I enjoyed Dragonspawn. As I mentioned it felt incredibly rushed (like the author had a deadline the next morning and stayed up all night trying to finish the story) and incomplete. There were lots of great ideas and story arcs Acres could have explored but just never did. It felt like he gave up trying to be creative, didn't want to finish the story and just decided to end it with a quick resolution without bothering to expand on an interesting story.
