Better than Avatar

I read these books years ago and had since loaned them to brother, who loaned them to friend, who loaned them, you get the gist. Long since gone. I needed to revisit them so I purchased through dealers at Amazon. Good price and great set of books.

Great Book

I really liked all 3 books in this trilogy.

There seems to be alot of wisdom in these books...and the ways of the

Tu-Grik-Ng are so simple and authentic. This is probably the first

science fiction book I have really enjoyed so much.

Outcasts back together again, sort of...

"Skryling's Blade" is the second book in the Young Adult fantasy series, Runesword. The story is continued by two completely new authors, Rose Estes (known for her early D&D Endless Quest and Greyhawk novels) and Tom Wham (board game designer). New authors for each book seem to have been the theme for this series in efforts to quickly crank out more stories. While the authors may be different, the characters pretty much remain the same. Cal the warrior, Bith the sorceress, Hathor the troll and Endril the elf are all back together again on their second adventure. The Norse God Vili (Brother of Odin) once again tasks them (somewhat indirectly) in finding and destroying the second Runesword, known as Sjonbrand the Skryling's Blade. Cal takes center stage in this story while Bith, Hathor and Endril take more of a backseat in the tale. Here are my thoughts on Skryling's Blade;

Pros

+ Quick and easy read.

+ Introduction of the dwarf character Gunnar Greybeard is a welcome addition to the cast, although I had some concerns (see Cons).

+ Cover by Larry Elmore.

Cons

- Half the cast is imprisoned early on in the book leaving them largely absent from the story.

- Refers more heavily to Norse mythos compared to the first book. The characters even run into Thor himself on their adventures.

- The "Dark Lord" is still largely faceless and not really a character, just a name.

- Gunnar's character description sounded more like a garden gnome and not at all like the dwarf depicted on the cover art. Also, Gunnar's magical items and abilities were just too convenient and plentiful allowing the characters to travel and escape harm with little to no risk.

- King of the Skrisung awards Cal with magical items aplenty after Cal helps him defeat the creature tormenting his people. Why weren't the king and his people using these magical items to fight the beast wiping out their population?

- Bith and Cal's squabbling is still persistent and annoying.

- Abrupt and cliché ending.

- No world map.

Skryling's Blade was pretty much on par with the first book in the series. The story is loosely connected and the authors do make mention of the Outcasts previous adventure. My main issue with this series is believing the group of four characters stays together. Sure they're united at the beginning of each book by the god Vili to recover another Runesword, but beyond that it's sometimes difficult to see them adventuring together.

Another great book from Christie Golden.

This is an excellent story, well told, with plenty of interesting twists and turns to keep one interested. The characters are well developed and the protagonists likeable, while the antagonists are realistic enough to be believable. Their motivations, while not always obvious, eventually become clear and are also believable.

set in the same world as Golden's fantastic Instrument of Fate

I absolutely ADORED this book! It was so hard for me to put it down! King's Man & Thief is a riveting fantasy tale, set in the same world as Golden's fantastic Instrument of Fate, about Deveren, an ex King's Man now turned theif in order to try and find out who murdered his wife. In doing so, however, he ends up realizing a lot of the thieves are just good people tryibg to stay alive and actually truly becomes a thief. Things start to go bad when their leader is killed in a mass murder of thieves and Deveren takes up the mantle of the leader which most people are quite ok with, but some are very very not happy with and eventually plot their Revenge.

King's Man & Thief is full of wonder, in depth looks into this fantastic world of magic, royalty, thieves, as well as core emotions and happenings spurred on by the Gods such as Love, Death, and Vengeance. After reading Instrument of Fate (I highly recommend doing that first) which touches on the Gods and a bigger world, this book completely rips open that idea, showing us many Gods, delving us into their stories more and how they interact with their human Blessers as well as how they interact with the world as a whole.

As much praise as I give it, there are still a few criticisms I have: it doesn't feel super deep, some of the plot elements aren't as well developed as I wanted and occassionally rushed. However, I still give the book five stars. Despite a few criticisms, it does not actually hurt the book at all to me, but makes it feel more real.

I really really loved this books and I hope you will too! I already can't wait to re-read it one day.

Tedious Torture Porn

No, this is not a good book to read. It's fairly stereotypical, full of violence and malevolent acts towards women, underused protagonists, and contains a plethora of oddly-named characters with little personality among them all. I regret reading this.

This book is daring, captivating and imaginative.

Christie Golden takes us back into Byrnian history with this prequel to "Instrument of Fate." The definite strengths in this book include her characterization techniques, her background knowledge and her vivid imagery.

Finale of a great series.

The final volume of '_The Dance of the Gods_, this ties up all the threads while leaving the characters to face an uncertain future. The revelations .about the history and structure of magic are fascinating throughout the series; the characters continue to deepen and gather skills and experience. This is fantasy that grasps that actions have consequences.

Spell of Apocalypse, Dance of the Gods #4 and end of series.

Need to read the preceding books in this series for this book to make sense. There are only four books in the series. The series starts off very well and kinda slows down with everything getting killed and destroyed in the end; like Mayer Alan Brenner had lost his muse. But it is well written and enjoyable and worth reading, lot better than the average Fantasy that is on the stand today.

Amazing series

Read the series when it first came out in the 90s. Still love it.

Better than Good!

What can I tell you? Read this guy! I don't know what he's doing or where he is now, but the series is more than worth it. If you like Douglas Adams, Robert Rankin, Roger Zelazny, Greg Costikyan - well, you'll love Mr. Brenner.

A really great fantasy story

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Derac Vidor is captain of the Kinir Elite. He has been tasked with helping keep everyone safe from bad forces. But something is happening within his colony and he and his team have been betrayed. However, they don't know by whom or why. He has to figure out who is doing this and how to stop them without losing any of this team members or his sanity.

I really liked this story. I liked Derac and his team. He's smart, he's cunning and he is mission oriented. But, he also has a heart and needs to do something about his crush on teammate Kie. He can't risk starting something with her, his subordinate, or putting her in harms way. However, she's strong and she wants to do her job. She doesn't want anyone to take her job from her no matter what. I love their dynamic and their interactions. They seemed to make a good pair and I would like to see some more of their stories.

Diary of a Bibliophile Review

I have to admit, I wasn't sure I wanted to read this book. I don't read a lot of high fantasy. Not because I have any particular problem with it, I'm just not drawn to it the way some people are. But I have been hearing a lot about this book, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Turns out, that was a good call!

For me, a good book is one that I can connect to emotionally. The book opens with a highly emotional scene where Derac, the Captain of an Elvin military unit called the Kinir Elite, loses his wife in a fire. The visual of this scene was so disturbing I immediately became emotionally connected with Derac.

The story picks up ten years later--Derac is still the successful Captain of the Elite, but he has never really been able to move on from his guilt over the loss of his wife. When he first begins to feel attraction to Kie, an archer in his unit, he is hesitant to act on his feelings. I found the love story that grew up around these two characters refreshing in its slowness.

Great Series

I found two of this series at a used book store and had to buy the others online. It was great reading. The characters were colorful and the plots were easy to follow. The series could actually be continued. If you like these type of stories I would recommend buying this one.

Love it!

I love this book and it is to my eternal sadness that Rusch has not (that I can find, at least) written anything else like it. This is an imaginative and well-written read that is absorbing and entertaining. Unlike much of Rusch's other work, this is a standalone book - that is, it's not part of a trilogy or series. The characters are interesting and multifaceted. People aren't simply good or evil; they just have different agendas. I first read this as a teenager, but I would certainly recommend it to adults as well.
