I couldn't finish this book.

I was so distracted by the strange changing accents and the new pronunciations of names that I couldn't focus enough to finish listening.

Be prepared for another reader

I enjoy this series a lot, and even with this book having a 4th reader, the immersion into the world is still there. But with this new reader be prepared for absolute butchery. She gives characters random accents, and mainly butchers the crap out of the pronunciation of Lurr, Rafael, and a bunch of other things. It's very difficult to get used to her killing the names of people and places after 3 books of the same pronunciation.

Beautifully written and read!

I so happy to have found this series. It is so well written and so engaging I know I will listen to it again and again. I highly recommend it to fantasy fans. The narrator is wonderful also. I'm only sorry there are only 5 books!!

An excellent sequel and true to the original.

This series is about a conquer race spreading across the planet and an Island that may be the end of them. First of all drop your concepts of good and evil at the gate. There is no good or evil here. These people are driven by a desire to survive and conquer. It brings to mind the "northern hordes" stories. They are spreading like a disease across the planet but why? Is something worse behind them driving them?

The Fey in this story are racially diverse. They are like the romans in that they absorb the cultures and people they conquer. They do not destroy, they subjugate.

The obligatory magic and shapeshifting is present. The Islanders they are attempting to defeat seem to have no magic but something more powerful and that is Faith.

I enjoyed the Narrators voice and characterizations.

It is complicated and not a "lite" read. The story takes a little concentration to follow, but is worth it.

This Sequel continues the evolving story of two very different people working toward the same goal and one very self centered man that ruins everything.

Delusions and ideas of grandeur are destroyed and rearranged in this book.

Loyalties are changed and a new order is in the offing.

I love Dennis Mckiernan but not the Silver Call

I have to say I have read several books by Dennis Mckiernan but "Trek to Kraggen Cor" and "The Brega Path are two poorly written books. I have read somewhere that these two books were written before the Iron Tower Trilogy which I could believe. The Iron Tower Trilogy is far superior and the characters and story are much more developed and interesting.

Unfortunately Trek and Brega's Path are horribly boring and the characters are far less engaging. While the Warrows in the Iron Tower were smart, brave and interesting, the Warrows in the Silver Call are whiny and annoying. It was hard for me to like the characters in this book. I always felt like they were preaching or speaking as if they were talking to a 5 year old.

To be fair, it could have been the reader of these books that made the Silver Call so unbearable. After listening to the Iron Tower and Cameron Beierle's naration, Jerry Sciarrio sounds awful. He sounds like he is out of breath and has way too much saliva when he is reading. Plus he came across very rushed, choppy and forced. He does not have the ease in narration that Cameron had. Also, he could never seem to get the pronunciation of Tuck and/or Tuckerby correct. He would sometimes get it right but other times he would pronounce it in several different ways (Tuckburry, Took, etc....) It became really annoying.

Sadly, I would recommend buying these books and skimming them or just reading a synopsis of these books. They are not worth listening to. At least if you read the books you can skip past all the dribble and get to the meat of the story.

We love every book in the kingdom and knights series. Sir Kendrick is the first book. Sir Bentley is the second.

I love this series. The Christian character presented in this book is wonderful. It's the next best thing to the chronicles of narnia.

I discovered Audible.com and Sir Bentley on the same day. I could not stop listening. Chuck Black is a wonderful author. I can't wait to get started listening to the Kingdom series! I have never listened to an audible book. This is really a great way to experience a good book. I highly recommend this to everyone!

Good listen!

I really enjoyed this series by Katherine Kurtz. I hope that the later books will also soon be available in audiobook format.

Excellent Work!

Katherine Kurtz gets better with each novel in this world. She has an excellent grasp of court politics and intrigue. I cannot praise the narrator enough, as well.

There are several more books by Ms Kurtz. I would particularly recommend the Adept series, as well as the rest of the Deryni works, were they on Audible! Please Audible, let's have more from this spectacular talent!

Still love this series

I loved it when I was a teenager. I loved it again

in my twenties. And now I love it in my 50s.

High Deryni, originally published in 1973, is the third novel in Katherine Kurtzs DERYNI CHRONICLES. In the first novel, Deryni Rising, young Prince Kelson, who has inherited some Deryni magic, took his dead fathers throne after fighting an evil sorceress. In the second novel, Deryni Checkmate, tensions rose after the Church (obviously based on the medieval Catholic Church of our world) excommunicated Alaric Morgan and Duncan McLain, two of Kelsons relatives and advisors.

As the third novel starts, the Church has just split over the Deryni issue. Traditionally the clergy has viewed any sort of magic as evil, akin to the witchcraft which their Holy Scriptures clearly forbids. Theyre also worried that the Deryni will use their powers to overturn legitimate benevolent governments, undermine the Church, and establish malevolent dictatorships. Looking at the history of Gwynedd, and thinking about our own history, its easy to understand their point of view. But, unfortunately, the Church has dealt with their fear by persecuting anyone who has any Deryni blood. Recently a more progressive minority of Church leaders has split off. They recognize that since the Deryni power is inherited, being Deryni is not the problem; rather, its how a Deryni chooses to use his or her power that the Church should be concerned with. This ecclesiastical unrest threatens to cause civil war at a time when Gwynedd needs to unite against outside enemies.

As Ive mentioned in a previous review of this trilogy, these days I dont often find myself in the mood for this sort of heavy-feeling medieval-style epic fantasy, but Kurtz has won me over with her engaging characters and the murky religious, political, and personal issues they have to deal with. In High Deryni we discover that Deryni powers are not as uncommon amongst the clergy as youd expect based on their talk. We also discover a secret council of Deryni that works behind the scenes and only for its own good.

Brings Tamir Triad to a close

The Oracles Queen is the final novel in Lynn Flewellings TAMIR TRIAD, an epic story about a queen who has been prophesied to rule the land of Skala. To prevent the emergence of this queen, the king, who usurped the throne by killing his own female family members, has killed all the noble women and girls who could possibly challenge him. He doesnt know that his own sisters daughter has been hidden by dark magic and a heinous murder.

In the first novel, The Bone Dolls Twin, we watch this little girl grow up as a boy named Tobin. Tobin struggles with gender identity, the madness of his mother, the ghost of his murdered twin brother, the confusion and guilt of his father, and the need to deal with his uncle the king. Its pretty compelling. In Hidden Warrior, the second novel, Tobin has learned that hes really a girl. While this explains a lot about the weirdness of his life, the knowledge causes him all sorts of other issues the gender identify issue is most prominent. Can someone whos been thinking of himself as a boy all his life switch to being a girl? Fortunately, Tobin has time to adjust because he still must act like a boy until its time to reveal himself as the rightful queen.

The Oracles Queen begins where Hidden Warrior ended with Tobin being transformed into a girl in public and claiming to be the prophesied queen. Now the nobles are forced to choose sides will they be loyal to the king and the son he pronounced as his heir, or will they realize that Tamir must be crowned so that the land can be healed? Tamirs friends Prince Korins Companions must also choose sides between Prince Korin and Princess Tamir. For me, this was probably the most gripping part of the story in this last book of the trilogy. These boys (and, covertly, a few girls) have been training for years to fight for their prince and this is not how they expected it to happen.

Most of the plot of The Oracles Queen involves the war that ensues after Tamir is revealed and, at this point, the story isnt remarkably different from so many other epic fantasies. Theres a long slow build-up involving lots of strategizing, war preparations, troop movements, etc. Theres an oracle, visions, a race of helpful fae, and an evil wizard to defeat. Frankly, I thought much of this was dull, simply because it moved slowly and was reminiscent of so many other fantasy epics. I was further disappointed that, to try to secure her throne, Tamir resorted to some of the same ruthless tactics as her uncle had.

The other part of the story involves Tamirs personal life.

It was OK

Very long and drawn out...the end was unsatisfying... but if you stay with it, it does have something to say. Its about how we become the person we choose to be. Every decision you make sends your life path in a new direction. Sometimes good, sometimes not good. And only you havethe power to change your path. The story was painful to hear in some places, speaks of child abuse and neglect. It made me cry.

Suprising

I have never read anything by Charles De Lint prior to listening to The Onion Girl. It is a very good book. I was suprised at how well he mixed the faerie world into what would be considered our world. The book is dark and I saw in the reviews that it was very depressing and hard to read. I would say while it is a book that deals with dark issues it is one of hope and redemtion. You do have to stick with it to get to the hope and redemption.

The book deals with issues of sexual abuse, at times graphically but not pornagraphically so. It also deals with children living on the streets and the years work those who go through these experiences spend on healing and coping with the mental trauma related. I was nervous to read this because I have a very hard time when these issues are dealt with in a trite, superficial, or inaccurate manner. I am not an expert but did work in social work with these issues for a few years and found De Lint's interpretation to be believable and in a way healing. Many people who deal with childhood trauma turn to fantasy and science fiction as a release to live in another world. I was impressed with De Lint.

Apart from the topic, I also found the Onion Girl to be well written and captivating. It is a very interesting story that keeps you intrigued. I highly recommend this book

Her conviction to wanting others to know and experience that there is more to the world if you can move past your personal stumbling blocks and allow yourself to see it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Not sure I have a favorite character, they are all colorful and have interesting attributes. I think the biggest role in the book belongs to the dreaming world, which is a fascinating place that I wish I could go.

What about Kate Readings performance did you like?

I love Kate Reading, ever since listening to her co-narrate the wheel of time series with Micheal Kramer.

First of Three

I am not a fan of abridged versions as a rule, but I figured that, if anyone can be abridged effectively, it must be Donaldson. Let's face it, and much as I enjoy his books, he is prone to the verbose; to use a $5 word when a 50c one will do; to use a handful of adjectives and a fistful of adverbs. So when I saw that a new trilogy had hit the shelves, my immediate excitement was tempered by knowing that I would have to read three books, that the installments would be broken by cliff-hangers and that that I would have to renew friendship with my dictionary. As it turned out, none of this proved to be incorrect. The book lost very little in the abridgement and I am left waiting for Books 2 and 3 to be captured on audio. As it turned out, I had bought all three and I followed along as best I could with the narration for this one. It (the text) and the glossary at the back are very handy, especially if you (like I) need a refresher on the Land. Having enjoyed that, I am not inclined to read the full text of the remaining two, notwithstanding the cliff-hanger ending.

My only real disappointment was in the small role that Covenant plays in this installment. I've always preferred him to Linden Avery (my subjective preference) so it was with some regret that I realised he would not be a big part of Book 1 at least. This Book does a very good job updating the reader of the earlier trilogies (yes, there is more than one) so no re-reading is necessary although a quick flick of the Glossary is worth the effort. I did that while listening to the Prologue (exciting though that is).

If you like Donaldson's stories, I think you'll like this, even though it is abridged. Anton Lesser (most recently the charred castle master for Ned Stark on the first season of Game of Thrones) gives a very expressive and impressive performance.

I can't take any more!

I enjoyed Donaldson's previous two books - despite having to make a determined effort to wade through to the end of the second one - and left it a while before considering him again. Seeing the audiobook I thought I might give it a try but by 30 minutes in I discovered I'd had all I could take of this series. The relentless doom and gloom, crises and trauma noooo!

I'm sure it's a good narration though!

Thomas Covenant could never just have a cold could he? 'Covenants nose streamed like a ceaseless tide of weeping pestilence, racking each breath with a thousand knives piercing his living tissue to the core and making each step a living nighmarish hell.' etc etc

Depressing hard work - gave up

What disappointed you about The Runes of the Earth?

As reflected in other reviews, Linden Avery is just so depressing. Maybe an ok read for others - I didn't need the pathos!

What about Anton Lessers performance did you like?
