"In this dazzling start to a new trilogy, Australian author Douglass once again combines mythology, fantasy, magic and romance to produce a consistent, well-rounded story full of seriously flawed characters both abhorrently evil and enthrallingly empathetic....Douglass continually surprises, and readers will eagerly await the next two books." (Publishers Weekly) "Sheryl Bernstein brings fortitude to this saga." (AudioFile)

    wonderful
i'm not sure why this doesn't have a better rating. i thought the writing was excellent, and the plot is fresh and exciting. i also really enjoyed the narration.
i highly recommend this to fantasy fans, and i for one am looking forward to the sequel!
    Slow start
This book is overall pretty good. The problem with it is that the author takes so long in setting up the story and the characters that you are likely to become bored before things really take off. However the ending leaves you wanting to know where the next book will take the story.
I hope that the publisher creates an audio version of "God's Concubine" which is the next book.
    domer80
Enjoyable listen. I hope the other books in the trilogy show up on Audible soon. I enjoy books (like this one) where you get to know multiple characters as opposed to books where each chapter is focused primarily on the main character.
    Hade's Daughter
A good listen. Little slow at first but once you get into it a good story with future potential for sequels.
    Couldn't finish
I am afraid that this book was boring, the characters shallow and hard to care about, and the action too drawn out. The idea behind the story was great, but I suffered through about 3/4 of the book and finally moved on to better things. I was disappointed because I normally really like this author.

Dragon Hunters is a top notch sequel.
Dragon Hunters is an excellent book. It has flaws, don't get me wrong, but it's definitely worth a listen. If you are a fan of Steven Erikson then you should enjoy Marc Turner as well.
Hard work, saved my good narration
The story was a bit boring. It it were not for Oliver Wyman I probably would not have finished it.
Not rotten, but it was hard work to finish the book.

Jim Eckert's daring exploits have earned him a title - Baron de Bois de Malencontri et Riveroak - and he has settled down to a peaceful life as a feudal lord, with his beloved Angela at his side. But a new peril endangers his enchanted realm - as the King of the Gnarlies teams up with the Earl of Cumberland, Jim's longtime rival, to kidnap his adopted son, Robert. Soon Sir Jim must assume the shape of the Dragon Knight once again to rescue little Robert, and finds himself entrenched in a magical battle royal - one he'll have to fight harder than ever to survive!

    Good
I enjoyed this book. This story isn't quite as good as the first 2 books. It should have repeated with a little more emphasis why the 2 main villains are out to get James Eckert. They sort of appear and are said to be the villains and that is it. This is especially true when one of the villains is left at the end of a book with all the appearances of turning over a new leaf. It also isn't too clear how the villains got in touch with The Gnarly King who is a villain. Paul Boehmer's reading fits the character very well. I enjoy his reading. There should be change in the description. Our hero James Eckert is not a mathematician. He was a teaching assistant at River Oaks who specialized in the Middle Ages. That is the reason why he considered staying in the 14th century setting for The Dragon series. He does/did not change into a non too bright dragon named Gorbash. He was transported into Gorbash's body and used it in book one. After that, he changes into a dragon who resembles the Cliff Side dragon community of which Gorbash is a member. I have found other books where the descriptions are wrong. Audible doesn't seem interested in making corrections even after this is pointed out to them.

A wonderfully fast-paced fantasy adventure in classic swords and sorcery style, from New York Times best-selling author, Paul S. Kemp.
    Members Reviews:
    Amazing
Simply amazing from start to finish. Paul S. Kemp will go down in history as one of the best writers that ever lived.
    Very thought provoking
straight into the pits of darkness with our hardened duo. Its not easy trying to be a good (well better at least) man, but they make a go at it. The first book introduced the pair of reluctant heroes, this one built upon that and dug deeper into their foundation.
The adventure, or rather race as it were, reminds me of many a late night D&D campaign. Especially the 'screw it and screw them, we'll kill those bungholes!' parts. The characters are made for the purpose of their conflict resolution(class and fighting style) but have such a great depth of role-play in their voices.
It won't end as you expect or leave you disappointed either. I personally walked away yet again with a the thoughts and ideals of how one becomes a better man, or even if you can tell once you are.
    Great book.
    Fantastic story
A great fantasy story! I really enjoyed the non epic feel of it. Such a refreshing change of pace.
Another Great Story of Nix and Egil
What made the experience of listening to A Discourse in Steel the most enjoyable?
The characters are not run of the mill archetypes and have much more depth than most in the genre, while the setting is common enough to be familiar so that time is not wasted on long-winded descriptions, but rather colorful even poetic descriptors. The narrator did a good job with accents and inflections, (especially the 6th blade).
What other book might you compare A Discourse in Steel to and why?
The protagonists are reminiscent, but not clones, of the classic fantasy heroes Fafhrd and Mouser. Two very different people held together through their common experience, their relationship is obviously close and growing. The dialog between them is very engaging.
What does Nick Podehl bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Good job providing the different characters with accents and speech impediments.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The continuous growth of the protagonists' brotherly bond.

    Does it again!!!!
Loved everything about it! This series leads me around like a....well like a Will-o- wisp!
Fast paced action brings friends to Ivy's side!
Ivy escaped from the land of Faerie with her fiancé, Ceffyl, and a testy friend, king of the Cat Sidhe, Sir Torn. But as they return, they discover that an evil force followed them into Ivys home town, Harborsmouth. The Huntsman and his powerful Barguest are bringing the Wild Hunt to Ivy and her community. The Huntsman will blow his horn at sundown to loose the dark hounds on the city. Any bite from the hounds turns the victim into a new black hound.
Ivy would normally call on her witch friend, Kaye, to help prepare a defense but Kaye has gone off the deep end on a power trip and may be as dangerous as the Huntsman. Ivy has to deal with Kaye before she can gather allies to face the Wild Hunt.
I enjoyed the action and the usual characters, plus extra creatures, brought in to help in each of the crisis that Ivy faces. I was a little distracted by some repetition of Ivy sort of whining. Still, she is growing and those around her recognize her special ability to bring adversaries together to face a common foe. Shes done it before and hopes to do it again to protect the city from the Wild Hunt. She tries to protect those she loves but can she save all her friends, including Ceff when he gets caught by the hounds? There are threads from prior books, and a few surprises, that get tied in nicely here. I liked how the friends come together in this good adventure.
Audio Notes: Melanie A. Mason and Anthony A. Bowlin do a nice job with the character voices. Their back and forth combination works well to make this a fun and entertaining listen.
I received this audiobook from the author as part of release tour.

Aodhan clutched uselessly at his head, groaning. He knew it was useless, because the voice was not inside his head. It followed him, skimming across buildings and land. It had followed him since he was sixteen, and it still followed him today, like a memory too horrific to be forgotten

    Funny, exciting and fast paced
Who was your favorite character and why?
Aodhan. I quite enjoy books where the protagonist is centuries old.
What about Matthew Lloyd Daviess performance did you like?
    I loved his accents. 5/5
    Any additional comments?
Its worth getting. It is funny and the concept is rather unique. Especialy liked how Demons weren't something inherently evil and didn't come from hell, but rather occationaly from human beings.
Sexy Scottish Demon, creative, gripping story!
Would you listen to Vigilante of Shadows again? Why?
Yes, because I found it entertaining. It grabbed my attention and I loved Aohdan (I'm sure I'm still spelling his name wrong but oh well).
What was one of the most memorable moments of Vigilante of Shadows?
Um, well there was that one sex scene that my husband just happened to get into the car while I was listening to. It was a rather steamy scene. In all serious though, I loved hearing about the drive to his home and the description of it along with all the other supernatural creatures that took up residence there.
What does Matthew Lloyd Davies bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
    Very good characterization.
    Where are the rest??
On Amazon and in Kindle and book format only.....Well, isn't that nice for people who have time to read?
This is a great book, it's a little slow but then not really. A little different take on paranormal romance. It's very interesting and sticks with you. I got this as a free Kindle book with $1.99 Whispersynch and gave it a try a year ago. Doing a re-listen now as I await the release of another book in 3 days and wondering why I did not continue with a series I obviously liked and was interested in, I checked with Google.

    Five Stars
Great series. I am reading it right now again. Like the connection between the books.
    Love this series!
This is my second time through this series and I just love it! Itâs got everything youâd want in a good book. Highly recommend it!
    Love
We love this entire series. Would love to see it continued. Not a fantasy reader by habit, but read and re read this a few times.
One of the best in the series!
Not to be left out, Niall's daughter, Keely, is the focus of this sixth installment in the Chronicles of the Cheysuli series. Keely is a tomboyish and strong heroine and her first-person perspective makes it easy to sympathize with her. This is a very memorable plot and though I have read this book countless times before, it is still a pleasure to re-read. It's quite fast-paced and has a lot more romance and violence than a lot of the other novels in the series. This is also a more emotional one. This has been such fun to re-read - it reminds me of being younger when these books ranked among my all-time favorites. There are more complex and intricate epic fantasies available, but Roberson excels as creating characters that are worth caring about and set in a land that sparks the imagination. With each book in the series, her writing improves. Though many of them are more akin to coming-of-age novels, it works in the context of the series. This one has a more personal feel to it than some of the others and certainly tackles some bigger issues that do not always appear in fantasy.
I'd give it 10 stars if I could
This book - and this entire series - is absolutely wonderful. I have loved this series for years. If you want a novel (and series!) that has a unique and engaging story line, that is fast paced, with deeply evolved characters that you will grow to love, this series is for you!

Kismet Andreas lives in fear of the shadows.
For the young tattoo artist, the shadows hold more than darkness. He is certain of his insanity because the dark holds creatures and crawling things only he can see - monsters who hunt out the weak to eat their minds and souls, leaving behind only empty husks and despair.
And if there's one thing Kismet fears more than being hunted - it's the madness left in its wake.
The shadowy Veil is Mal's home. As Pestilence, he is the youngest - and most inexperienced - of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, immortal manifestations resurrected to serve - and cull - mankind. Invisible to all but the dead and insane, the Four exist between the Veil and the mortal world, bound to their nearly eternal fate. Feared by other immortals, the Horsemen live in near solitude, but Mal longs to know more than death, war and famine.
Mal longs to be...more human. To interact with someone other than lunatics or the deceased.
When Kismet rescues Mal from a shadowy attack, Pestilence is suddenly thrust into a vicious war - where mankind is the prize, and the only one who has faith in Mal is the human the other Horsemen believe is destined to die.

    Scary, creepy, but oh-so-engaging!
    Any additional comments?
There is something I dont like to admit about myself. I get scared and startled easily.
Yes, I am a wuss. I turn into a quivering pile of shuddering terror around horror stories. Its true. I get nightmares easily and figure, hey! No reason to bring that shit to my playground, right? So I avoid horror movies and books whenever I can. Which is most of the time.
When I was offered Ink and Shadows for review I did read the blurb, but what I was thinking was Rhys Ford and Greg Tremblay together? Winning combo sign me right up! I saw this as Urban Fantasy, sure, but I didnt really think anything of it.
I should have. Oh, god, I really should have. Because this story creeped me outbig time.
The story scared the (bleep) out me. Straight up left me clutching the sheets trying not to fall asleep for the images in my mind scared.
I played a chapter for a co-worker that had me straight up gasping and trembling
And she looked at me like Id grown a second head. Thats not scary. I was told. But it *was* scary, for me. I didnt want to keep listening, but I couldnt stop.
Between the awesome world building, and the fabulous narration performance by Greg Tremblay (naturally!) I was hooked. I was really into the story, which for someone whos not a wuss, will probably work out a lot better than it did for me.
This is a great stepping stone story into this new world. While not a cliffhanger, the story is more an introduction to the world and the characters, and certainly not complete. The end lends itself to many unanswered questions, which I assume will be answered in later installments. Also, good for some to know is that though theres some hints of affection and longing between characters, this is by no means a romance. Maybe therell be some romance later, you can see the potential of it, but theres none here.
This one is for those people who love a good paranormal/urban fantasy story with lots of deep, dark crevices to explore. More for say a Stephen King-type fan than a Nora Roberts-type fan, if you know what I mean.
My problem? Now Im hooked. I need to know what happens next.
