    Format: Unabridged
Length: 21 hrs and 8 mins

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic
    Publisher's Summary:
The realms of the Forelands are in turmoil as a result of the machinations of a powerful conspiracy of sorcerers, members of a race called the Qirsi, pale-skinned folk feared by those in power. Though many refuse to acknowledge the possibility of a conspiracy, a handful of Qirsi and nobles realize that the time has come to take action, even at the cost of their loves, their honor, and even their lives.
The rebels don't know of each other's actions, however, and the tenuous threads holding the realms together are starting to unravel. With the death of a king, nobles gather to choose a new leader, and deadly power springs from a most unexpected source. As new alliances form, former enemies become unlikely partners.
But who can be trusted in these new alliances, and who will be swayed by love, jealousy, or pride to betray their new allies? For more than the future of the realm is at stake. The future of the entire Forelands is in danger, and a 900-year-old grudge may lead to civil war. Those who wish to prevent it must place their hopes in a reluctant assassin, a few Qirsi and nobles, and the one man who may be able to defeat the leader of the conspiracy...if he can survive long enough to do it.

    I'm Hooked
From the start of book 1, I've been lost (good way) in this world. Headed for #3 now
    A real let down
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The story was a let down and there was hardly any plot movement. There was a lot a of political intrigue, but it wasn't very well done. The currency system leaves a lot to be desired and is nonsensical at times.
Has Seeds of Betrayal put you off other books in this genre?
    No.
What didnt you like about Alpha Trivettes performance?
The narrator did a very good job, but was let down by the story.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Seeds of Betrayal?
I would have focused less on the political intrigues.
    Any additional comments?
The magic system and the currency system in this book are not well developed. I was looking forward to seeing more of Lord Tavis, but his story hardly progressed. The author is at least two or three leagues below George RR Martin or Brandon Sanderson. Suffice to say that I wont be completing the series.

    The start of an epic
Well told story told in the classic fantasy style of myth, magic, and mayhem. Michael Pages does a great reading creating distinct characters as he introduces us to the Lord of the Isles saga. David Drake lays out a solid foundation to build his world. Great ear candy if your looking for a good fantasy tale.
    Epic Fantasy-Lite
Where does Lord of the Isles rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Its decent. It deserves more of a 3.5 star rating than a 4 but it didn't deserve a 3 star. The strength is in its pacing which is quick and requires close attention from the listener.
Drake does not spend as much time in characterization as authors such as Robert Jordan or GRRM. However, in doing so he also avoid the traps that Robert Jordan and GRRM both fall into which is repetitive characterizations that get really boring when you're binge listening.
What other book might you compare Lord of the Isles to and why?
This can be considered a lighter version of Robert Jordan.
    Give this Series a Shot!
I might be a little biased because I LOVED these books when I first found them at my local library all the way back in 2008 (eleven years after the first one was printed). But listening to them on Audible has reminded me so much of why I loved them and why they - periodically - drive me a little batty.
This series is great for a lot of reasons. First, it has all the classic fantasy tropes you could ask for (and Tropes Are Not Bad). Theres a young shepherd boy who would become king; a maiden in peril who seeks not only safety, but agency; a strong man whose simple country values will help him resist the temptation; and at least two wise old sages to give advice to our heroes on their quests. These tropes are used, but this series avoids some of the pits fantasy books are wont to fall into. There are, for instance, as many complex and interesting female characters in this series as there are males. And these women all have goals, motivations, and friendships outside of the main cast; nary a refrigerator to be found.
Second, while the books have a large cast of characters who go their separate ways, theyre never apart for longer than the length of each individual book. When I read these the first time, I found it was fun to skip around and follow each characters journey separately until the very end. This isnt nearly as easy with the audiobook format, but neither is it difficult to keep track like it can be with other fantasy series with a plenitude of characters (see: Wheel of Time, Song of Ice and Fire, etc).
Third, the characters and the world feel very lived in. We know what kind of beer each character likes. We learn how they wear their clothes and if they prefers shoes to sandals. We never question their motivations because their characters are so fleshed out the author knows what each character would do were they real.

    I like it.
This is a pretty good book. It is not the best, but there are a lot worse. I liked the gnolls. If a sequel was written, I would buy it.
    NOT THE BEST!
Unfortunately Soldiers of Ice was a quite a disappointment! The title is a bit misleading if you are expecting epic battles/wars. There are encounters with ice mephits and elementals (one of each...) and gnolls, but the book lacks that extra something needed to push it over the top. Both the plot and the writing are average. Instead, I recommend other books from the Series such as Red Magic or Parched Sea to mention a few, all the while keeping in mind the "heavy artillery" Forgotten Realms novels that have been written by RA Salvatore, Elaine Cunningham, Ed Greenwood etc My advice, read the Soldiers of Ice only after you're done reading most of the other Forgotten Realms books and you are still in need of more Toril related material.
    A great read!
I don't understand the negative reviews, did they read the same book I read???
Soldiers of Ice is gripping right from the front page! It sucks you in and takes you on a wild and fast ride in a story that you cannot put down. The characters are really well-developed, even the monsters are well crafted, which is a refreshing change for a Forgotten Realms book. No, this one won't win the Nobel prize for fiction any time soon, but it is a great read, and one of my favorite FR books ever! Obviously, I highly recommend it. Read it and see if you agree.
    Fun in the snow....
I like David Cook as an author. This book did a good job of holding my interest. I especially liked the descriptions of gnoll society and the gnome warren. The choice to make Vreesar, an ice para-elemental, the main villain was different. Overall, a good book. I'd recommend it for any fan of the Forgotten Realms.
    Something Different
This is the only Forgotten Realms novel I own or have thus far read from "the Harpers" series. I wasn't really sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised.
The story is fairly straight forward. The main character is a ranger trying to gain membership to the Harpers and is thus sent on basic reconnaissance mission as a test. As expected, the whole mission falls apart.
She has to use her wits and quickly forge alliances between different races which include a Gnoll shaman, a clan of hardy Gnomes, and a Human fighter living as a hermit.
I thought the story was very well written that was quite enjoyable with a straightforward plot that is easy enough to follow.
I would suggest this title if you want to read a Forgotten Realms story that is straight forward and a little different.

The incredible story that fans of The Sun Sword series have been waiting to listen to - the battle for control of House Terafin.

Nursing Jay back to health is an unusual act for a man who renounced his own family long ago, and the situation becomes stranger still when Jay begins to form a den of other rescued children in Raths home. But worse perils lurk beneath the slums: The demons that once nearly destroyed the Essalieyan Empire are stirring again, and soon Rath and Jay will find themselves targets of these deadly and ruthless beings.
    Members Reviews:
    An unexpected gem.
Would you listen to The Hidden City again? Why?
A story like this is worth listening to again. The cast of characters is petty big and the mystery they weave is revealed slowly with lots of twists and turns.
What other book might you compare The Hidden City to and why?
I found this book similar to Kristen Britain's Green Rider. An excellent story with believable characters that you care very much about.
What does Eva Wilhelm bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The characters are richly presented. Through her narration I developed an emotional attachment to all of them.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
She reveals the difficult and challenging lives that these young children have endured. The author takes her characters through a number of "gut wrenching" situations that leave you emotionally drained.
    More Good Writing from Michelle!
    Any additional comments?
I became a fan of Michele Sagara by listening to the Chronicles of Elantra Series. Imagine my delight when I discovered another series written by her!
This book is just as descriptive and magical.
Michelle has a special talent for creating worlds that come alive, peopled with characters that wend their way into your life.
Eva's reading of the book is also excellent. Her voice is perfect for 10-year old Jay. My only criticism would be the voice of Aaron, which sounded a bit too forced or fake. But overall, what great job she does with a wide cast of characters.
I'm off to download Book 2!
Series is 12 Books - Missing Middle 6 Books
The oddity of this series is that it was written/released out of order. My understanding is the 1st three books start the plot. A 2nd group of six books (not on Audible) called The Sun Sword (under the name Michelle Sagara) sit between the 1st three books and the last three books of House War. There's no impact at all in the 1st three books as there's no reference to events that technically happen in the future. It is a little problematic in the last three books as references to the plot in the Sun Sword series as somewhat frequent.
Another oddity of the writing is that as the books proceed, no standard narrator or point of view device is used. The same chapter can switch between the viewpoints of different characters for the same events.

    Insert Sun Sword Series here....
What you should know is that, between this book and the previous one, 16 years has passed. That segment of Jewel's life is covered in the Sun Sword Series. Unfortunately, that series isn't on Audible. Here's the short of it- the first chapter will throw you a bit because it starts in the heart of action with some characters that were brought in from the other series. If you've reading THIS series up till now then just hold on for the first 2-3 chapters and you'll get the hang of it. The majority of the book focuses on the same characters and places you already know and the new characters are explained well enough. I found myself enjoying this one as much as the first book I the series.
    Dilemmas...
So, this book takes place after the Sunsword series, which I haven't read yet. I started with this. And while it is not strictly necessary to read the series, there is a huge jump in time and events between book 3 and book 4. The series still stands on its own, but there is too much that happened in the other series that would add extra context and flavor to these books. I may have to track them down before getting Books 5 & 6 now just for my own sanity.
House War - Missing Middle of Series
As Susan noted in her review, the House War series of 6 books actually has a completely different series where events occur between the 1st three books of House War and the 2nd three books. This middle series is another 6 books called The Sun Sword. They are not on Audible. I've not read the Sun Sword and I did find a few instances in Skirmish where knowing specifics from the middle series would have helped reduce the number of huh? moments. The middle series does not appear to occur in the same location/geography as House War. Skirmish apparently picks up where that middle series ends and resumes use of original series characters 16 years in the future.
I've found over the course of more than 100 hours of listening so far that the style of writing the author uses produces those huh? moments occasionally regardless of having missed a middle 6 books. It almost feels like explanatory sentences are paragraphs were edited out or maybe they just never existed.
Like other books in House War, Skirmish is actually relatively compact in plot. Events occur only over a few days. Jewel, the lead character, emerges with new abilities that seem almost omniscient in scope, but not used much in this book.
    Skirmish
I am hooked on this series. I really like the story line. Sometimes the facial expressions do not vary much "Her/his brows rose" but I still enjoy it!
    I love this book.
I really really really really really really really really really like, love this book. Tuesday next to the point of view 5, and I can see the folder I just can't figure out how to put anything in the folder. sent from my Sprint Samsung Galaxy S, and I can see the folder I just can't figure

    What a fun delightful experience
This series is a light-hearted look at mythical creatures and beings as they would interact with humans and humans with them. I love the story lines and the books are a getaway from everyday world--escapist. when I start reading I strive to read until finish...I hate to put down. They are cute lovable people in the book. If you are looking for story lines that make you life..read the series by Jody Lynn Nye. If you are looking for serious fair this is not the series to fair. I sincerely love.
You may believe in magic after this series!
Book two in a series of four. I used to have this in paperback but it got destroyed. When I saw the entire series of four books I felt the urge to read them all again. I am on book four and loving them all over again! Jody Lynn Nye has a very good writing style. Lite yet intriguing and enjoyable to the max! You may believe in magic after reading these books!
    Elves in Ireland. Really?!
Fun read about a human college student who travels to Scotland and Ireland for an archeology class and to find relatives. His "nephew" who accompanies him is really a 40 year old elf. They attract the attention of a Special Agent/Investigator and things go downhill from there -- with lots of humorous happenings along the way!
    Finally got it!!!!
While I have had the other books in the series I was missing this one, couldn't find it anywhere. Finally Amazon got it. Just as great as the others. If you like elves, fairies, legends and magic you have got to get not only this book but the rest of the series. You can't miss with it. Jody Lynn Nye has away of making it so you not only get caught up in the story you get involved with the characters to the point of rooting for them. Here's hoping she writes more to this series.
    A fun adventure
Book 2 continues the life & adventure into Fairyland by Keith Doyle. The characterization & descriptive elements are fascinating. If you've ever wanted to enter the land of make-believe, Book 1 is the doorway into it. In this book you are there.

A worthy continuation of the series
Would you listen to House Name again? Why?
    Yes
What other book might you compare House Name to and why?
Anything by Michelle Sagara/West - you don't need a computer to run a concordance to recognize the word use or style:-)
What does Eva Wilhelm bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
In my copy (the enhanced version) about 32 minutes from the end she stops halfway through a sentence and says something that sound suspiciously like f*ck and then restarts the sentence - I doubt that's in the printed copy of the book!
    Any additional comments?
One more file editing error - the enhanced version comes as a single file, yet halfway or perhaps 2/3 through the file there's the tag the comes at the end of an intermediate part ("You've reached the end of a part, but not the end of the book.....") Someone was asleep at the editing desk...
Narrator Curse in Chapter 29 is GOLDEN
What was one of the most memorable moments of House Name?
When the narrator loudly curses in the final chapter... rewound about 7 times. Awesome. Really. I was getting ever so slightly bored. Awesome. You are my hero Eva!
    Lots of Detail
Would you consider the audio edition of House Name to be better than the print version?
Yes, the reader makes all the detail more vivid.
What other book might you compare House Name to and why?
It reminds me of the Lord of the Rings.
Have you listened to any of Eva Wilhelms other performances before? How does this one compare?
    I have not.
    It grabs hold of you
This is my second time listening to the series. I am enjoying it even more. Hearing things I missed the first time ( about four months ago) listen- you will not be sorry
    House Name

I also like the length of these books. Worth the credit!

    Publisher's Summary:
Long ago, the gods forged Twelve Swords of Power and threw them on the gameboard of life to watch men scramble. But they had forged too well: The Swords could kill the gods themselves.
Now the gods gone, the Swords are scattered across the land, some held by those of good heart...others by those whose purposes are evil...and one, Sightblinder, is held by Arnfinn, a young country boy who knows nothing of the Tale of Swords or of Sightblinder's power; to make the viewer see that which he most desires - or most fears.
The tale begins innocently enough as Prince Mark of Tasavalta, accompanied by his nephew Zoltan and doughty Ben of Purkinje, seeks out the castle of the good and mighty wizard Honan-Fu, hoping that Honan-Fu will agree to tutor Mark's young son Adrian. But as they approach the lakebound keep, soldiers set upon them, and Mark is seized by an enormous griffin, carried off to the castle, and thrown into a hellish prison of enchantment.
Honan-Fu, powerful as he is, has been vanquished by the Ancient One, a being at once reptilian and human who has slipped the bonds of time, armed not only with his personal spells and demons, but with Prince Mark's captured weapon, the Sword of Force, Shieldbreaker.
It is up to Ben and Zoltan to rescue Mark. But first they must deal with ex-Queen Yambu, and the unlikely assistance she offers; with the innocent Arnfinn, holder of Sightblinder; and with the stunningly beautiful girl Arnfinn loves - the Lady Ninazu, Honan-Fu's daughter. Not to mention the enigmatic Emperor.
Told with Fred Saberhagen's enormous gusto and narrative skill, Sightblinder's Story will delight the listeners who made The First Book of Lost Swords: Woundhealer's Story a fantasy best seller.

    Only non-fives review so far
I usually only review when I love something, and I realize this is a "barn door/stolen horse" situation, but I did not love the production of this book. I'm not sure whether it was the narrator or the producer, but the reading was peculiar. Words were mispronounced, there was inconsistent pronunciation of certain names or words through the text, and there were a surprising number of timing and emphasis errors - weird pauses, or things that should have been read a certain way to provide a particular meaning but weren't. Another issue was the inconsistency of name pronunciations between this series and the previous trilogy, which was narrated by someone else. It all made the listening a distraction rather than an enhancement. I'm going to continue with the series, because I like the story, and I hope things improve in subsequent books.
I'm not a fan of the narrator...
Cynthia Barrett doesn't inspire me like some other narrators do. Otherwise, this is a great listen. Most of Mr. Saberhagen's work is this good or better.
    Terrible narration, ruined book.
Her resume must look something like " are your protagonists too scary? I'm your narrator. With my almost three slightly different voices I can dumb down even the most intelligent of characters, I can make even the most evil of characters sound like a Disney clown or make any character younger than twenty five sound like a pre teen.

Children Vanish as Magic Returns to the Realm
This is the first of two books in a medieval fantasy involving wizards, magical unicorns, and the king's elite warriors (wolves). The author knows horses and includes numerous grooming and training scenes. I liked the characters well enough, but the plot felt too slow at times. I got restless. The plot involves children and adults vanishing, so I wanted to see the heroic wolf-leader Reandn (aka Dnny) make progress towards resolution faster.
Plus, the talented narrator read the audiobook fairly slowly, with pauses between sentences and more pauses within sentences, between the "he said" part of the sentence and the actual dialogue. Ferguson needs to pick up the tempo a bit. Otherwise, a solid audio performance.
This first book came to a satisfying conclusion, with no cliffhanger. I might try book two.
Ehh. Not the worst but definitely needs work.
Are you looking for a story that goes on and on and goes no where until the very end which is obviously a set up to do it again in book 2?Characters you can't root for one way or another? Absolutely no humor? Then look no further this is the book for you
Struggled at first and then couldn't put it down.
Struggled at first and then couldn't put it down. I think it may have been a combo of the beginning of the story being mixed abs my life getting hectic at that time as well. so check it out for yourself.
    Loved it!
Excellently written & narrated! If you like a really good Fantasy this is it. And, if you're like me and also a horse person you'll really love it. I'm a gaited horse enthusiast, so was thrilled with Sky. I've already told my "barn friends" this is a Must Read! Can't wait to get the next in the series.
A brilliant story. ...you must read! .
Could listen for ever and ever and ever and ever bring it on let's have more like this! l

    Great Series!
This is a great epic series. I was constantly suprised as events in the story as they unfolded. The story is not predictable. I kept feeling that I was at the climax of the story, only to find out upon checking was that there were hours left in the book, and when the real climax and ending of the book occurred I was totally surprised by it, and definitely was left wanting more. Every time I listen to a novel by Carol Burg I like her writing more. Her fantasy is refreshing, her world's are new and believable, and she breaths life into her characters. The narrators are excellent. There are some reviewers that were angry that the narrators didn't get together and coordinate how to pronounce words used in the book and I think they should just give them a break. Even Kate Reading and Michael Kramer don't always pronounce words the same when they narrate the same book and they're married. I also liked the magic system in the book. I found it expansive and believable. I highly recommend this series for those that like original and refreshing epic fantasy, with extensive world building, a unique magic system, and believable characters with depth.
    Great fantasy
Carol Berg writes wonderful books, and her use of language is as much a part of her excellence as her plots and characterization. That language shines as an audio book, and Angele Masters handled it competently, without stumbles. She infused the character with personality as it was a first person narrative. Listening to the audio book definitely made one of my favorite books better.
Engaging story in a vivid universe.
This story has all my favorite attributes of a Carol Berg novel--beautifully described settings, suspense, a plot that doesn't just proceed on a worn-out straight line, and compelling characters. I'm not sure I'll like it as well as her Rai Kirah series, but I'm interested in seeing what the rest of this series has in store.
    Wonderful story and amazing narration.
Wonderful story and amazing narration. I can't wait to listen to the next book in the series.
    Meh
It wasn't a bad book, but it read more like a Jane Austin novel than an Epic Fantasy. Nothing actually happened in the book, and the motivations, or even existence of a 'big bad' was not evident until the later chapters. All in all, this book took a long time to go nowhere, and the ending was cheap. It's not bad, it's just not very good either.
