    An early look at Strahd
Any fan of the Ravenloft setting should experience this book, it gives a unique insight into the personality of Count Strahd, especially in regards to how he reacts under pressure.
The character of Jander serves as a fasinating and likable protagonist, reacting either with grim humour or by rolling his eyes when confronted by the horrors of Barovia.
All around this story is a well written tale both from a grim as well as from a casually humorous standpoint, something not easily done.
    Brilliant work to be sure.
    Great story
Always loved this story.Hearing it told again really paints the world of Ravenloft in vivid detail
    a beginning of the story
the narrator does his best to change voices for the characters... but it's not necessary. this book was recommended by a friend and I thoroughly enjoyed the tale, ready for book 2!
    The Journey
I personally enjoyed the "long game" theme the author wrote for the main character; one with centuries yet still to live wouldn't feel an overwhelming drive for haste anyways, and I appreciate the illusion of authenticity this departed on me.
A small glimpse of an expansive story setting.
I've read several of Christie Golden's newer works and her style has remained consistent for 25 years. The story itself is an interesting snapshot of a complex setting with a lot of interesting characters. It left me wanting to know more about the background of Ravenloft, Strahd, and the dozen other loose ended mysteries. It is good reading that ties into "the curse of strahd" 5e campaign book.

Story is good, but the narrator is terrible.
Would you be willing to try another one of Dara Rosenbergs performances?
Maybe in the same series, but overall I think the narrator makes too many major mistakes. There are many pauses for no reason, and fantastically bad pronunciation of common words. And she consistently changes pronunciation of the main character's name in the first few chapters of the book.
Don't Waste Your Time or Money
Would you try another book from Elaine Cunningham and/or Dara Rosenberg?
I would try another book by Elaine Cunningham. In fact, I purchased this audio book having already read the series. I had hoped to enjoy the story again.
How could the performance have been better?
The performance could have been 1000 times better by having someone else perform it. Dara, bless her soul, needs to find a new line of work. She is an absolutely awful performer. She must fidget like a leaf on the wind when recording. Her voice is always seemingly moving towards and away from the mic. Moreover, her English leaves much to be desired. Whether it is the rather odd way she pronounces some words, e.g., "SKIM-a-tar" instead of "scimitar," or the way she misreads words so that instead of "accessing" a room the character ends up "assessing" the room, her ability to read the text is truly cringeworthy.
Was Daughter of the Drow worth the listening time?
No. It was absolutely not worth the time.
    Any additional comments?
The story is good. It is worth listening to. However, the performance is so bad that I am going to try to get my money back. The time I wasted while I listened and hoped that Dara would find her stride, I can never get back. I only hope that I can help prevent other people from suffering as I did. The story is good. I hope that they will rerecord it with a competent and skillful performer. That will make all the difference.
Great Story, not so great narrator.
My biggest complaints are twofold, the audio quality and the narrator's frequent inability to pronounce words correctly. Other than that, I rather enjoyed the story and look forward to the next volume.
Awful narration ruins a promising book.
I removed it from my device 30 minutes in. Couldn't get past the mangling of basic english words, the tinny recording and misplaced pauses.
I'll just get this book into my mind the old fashioned way as it sounds quite promising. Hopefully Audible re-records it.
    why why why
I have to ask why they have done this to such a good book. I bought this book because I have read and reread this trilogy. listening to the book was a struggle. it sounded like it was recorded in a bathroom stall and inconsistent enough that you can tell where they had to go back and fix parts and splice them in. the reader is just that a poor reader.

    Fun with Ghosts and Spirits
I had a great time visiting the City of the Dead. The characters were fun and the story kept me interested. I'm just a bit sorry it's over.
    One Star
I really expected better. Dull and predictable. The other books in the series are far superior.
Another Very Different Sort of Winner from Rosemary
None of the stock descriptions I'd read about Rosemary Jones' book City of the Dead really did it justice or prepared me for the story within. While some, like what's on the back of the book cover, are technically correct, they just don't impart the lighthearted yet multi-layered feel of the book.
It was a pleasant surprise and and a joy to read. As an instant fan of Rosemary Jones' from her other book the Crypt of the Moaning Diamond, it was not a question of if I would buy City of the Dead, but when. So without reading much about the concept (or really even paying attention that Ed Greenwood was endorsing it), I was on the hook for Rosemary's next book.
The book is not a traditional D&D epic-type fantasy with overpowered heroes and endless trudging over picturesque landscapes to some predictable goal that can be found in some fantasy novels and trilogies. No "flaming swords of fire" here! Not that I don't enjoy some of that sort of story now and again -- I do. But this new book really got me thinking about the different ways that one might approach game-world inspired fiction and Fantasy novels in general. Rosemary really took a risk with this out of the box story concept and it paid off, at least for me. If I had to draw a comparison with another writer or style, I'd choose Charles Dickens. It's been over ten years since I've read anything by Dickens, but that's what Rosemary reminded me of with her new book.
But here I am four paragraphs in and I haven't even told you what the book is about yet. Well, the heroine is, for lack of a better description, a very ordinary young woman. She's powerful in her own way, to be sure, but most of her might comes from her strength of character and determination. "Plucky" is what Ed Greenwood calls her. She's very much a product of her upbringing, and Rosemary again introduces the concepts of class and being born into one's station that she touched on in Moaning Diamond. That said, she has an independent streak and a lack of desire to fall into some traditional role planned out for her.
Do you want a nutshell description of the story? I'm sorry but there really isn't one to give. The fun in reading this story is getting to know all of the characters within. The plotline is secondary. But if you've read this far then you're unlikely to be satisfied with that evasive answer so I'll put it another way.

    Good all around book...
Well I have started reading these "Chaos Wars" books, "The Doom Brigade" being the first, this one the second. But as for TPK, this was an excellent book from beginning to end. It is actually told in "flashback" mode, but the only evidence of this is that the story tellers comment at the end of most chapters, which I think is a very nice touch. It is split into 3 sections, which is also nice because it gives the book a "larger" feel that what it is. Very action packed, and the characters are well developed. Overall a nice read. Only thing I didnt like was that it was pretty short (~300 pages). Im used to those R. Jordan books that are so long and detailed. There were definitely areas that Niles could have wrote more on, but I'm not going to hold that against him one bit. 2 thumbs up.
    A good DragonLance book
A great story in the Chaos War saga, the novel has interesting (elven) political intrigue, some good twists and turns, and who doesn't love feisty dragons! Well written and great for any DragonLance fan.
    Part of the Chaos War
The King seems to be dominated by those who would maintain the world as it is. There is a rebellion that is ongoing. What to do?
    book
building my collection - thanks for helping - the rest of thsi is filler because of the darn minimum requirements - why do they do dumb stuff like this?
    Good, but a little disappointing...
    The Background:
"The Sacrifice" is an excellent short story in the "Second Generation" book, one of which I have read over and over again. Weis and Hickman have provided an excellent setting for the story to be continued and developed further. Unfortunately, even though Douglas Niles is a good writer, the story lacks in certain areas to make "The Puppet King" a great book.
    The Plot:
Firstly, the book should be titled "The Exiled King" rather than the puppet king, since most of the story centres around Porthios and his band of elves. There are too many battle scenes, and not enough political intrigue that one would expect from "The Puppet King". I was expecting something more of David Edding's "The Diamond Throne" political intrigues.
    Development of Characters:
This is my major complaint about this book. I would like to see Gilthas developed from the young puppet to a conspirator and a manipulator of the master of puppet. I would like to see him gaining the trust of the young elves in the senate council (as Tanis suggested in "The Sacrifice") and slowly work their way for the better good. But that didn't happen. Gilthas character developed too little, and too late.

    Members Reviews:
Great continuation of War of the Spider Queen
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Dara Rosenberg?
Rosalyn Landor would have been a better choice for the narration. She read all six books of The War of the Spider Queen and her voice would have added consistency to the story.
    Any additional comments?
While I don't think Dara Rosenberg is the worst narrator that I have every heard, she is clearly out of her depth with the subject matter (this also applies to the Darkwalker on Moonshae Trilogy). Rosalyn Landor, who voiced The War of the Spider Queen, would have given the book just what it needed... the right voice and consistency.
This should be re-read by Rosalyn in much the same way as R.A. Salvatore's books are all being (re)read by Victor Bevine.
    Worst Performance I've EVER heard!
Would you try another book from Lisa Smedman and/or Dara Rosenberg?
I would and will never try another book performed by Dara Rosenberg.
What didnt you like about Dara Rosenbergs performance?
I completely agree with the "Good Story, Bad Performance" review. She clearly does not like what she is reading and does not understand the story. I have been listening to audiobooks for years and have hundreds. This is the first I've ever found so poorly read that I can't stand to finish. Lisa Smedman must have been horrified when she heard this. The tone and inflection of her speech is the same as that of a pre-school teacher reading mother goose to three year old children. It is in this voice she describes murder and mayhem taking place in a level of hell. It must be no secret that the performance stinks if there is a specific template question like this in the review form.
Really tried! Can't get past narrator.
I looked forward to this book, having really liked Lisa Smedman's contribution to the War of the Spider Queen series (and this character in particular). And I really tried to listen to it, but this narrator is truly dreadful in this context.
Really, truly dreadful, like a very cheerful elementary school kid who still has to "Read -- all -- the -- words -- carefully -- in -- case -- there -- is -- A -- problem.
    I love this book, but...
I love this book. Read it years ago, and the story is amazing. However, the performance of this particular narrator is absolutely abysmal. Many of the common words in the English language are mispronounced, leading me to question if this is her first language. That's leaving off the strange words unique to the Forgotten Realms.

It feels great reading a "new" Dragonlance book again
It feels great reading a "new" Dragonlance book again. Fistandantilus Reborn is part of the Lost Legends series and it is written by Douglas Niles.
First off, if you are unfamiliar with the Dragonlance lore, do not start that reading adventure with this book. Instead, check out Dragonlance Chronicles, as well as Dragonlance Legends.
With that said, Fistandantilus Reborn is a dark fantasy with moments of levity sprinkled in. That is expected whenever a kender is involved after all.
No, this book doesn't hold up to the original series but it was an enjoyable read. It holds new characters within a familiar place and an all too familiar threat.
    Three Stars
    good read love the book
Not as good as I expected
I loved the back story of Fistandantilus from the legends series and hoped for as rich a plot here. It was still an entertaining read.

    Great story and great narrator!
This has been one of my favorite books since it came out and so at first I was apprehensive about getting the audiobook, due to Audible's poor selection of narrators. I'm glad I was pleasantly surprised and want to thank Nick Sullivan, for his amazing performance! He was on point with character voices and his ability to bring life into the story! The next Dragonlance books I look at will be the ones narrated by him.
As for the story, it's great and very entertaining. It's got parts that will have you laughing and other parts that completely pull you in.
    Fantastic Fun
What did you love best about The Doom Brigade?
The characters are inanimately enjoyable. Kang and Selquist are both interesting well rounded and wonderful. Slyth is also great as is Ogger and Mortar and Pestle. Wonderful cast and Nick Sullivan is an exquisite voice actor
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Doom Brigade?
There are many memorable moments and in truth, i've no desire to spoil them by writing them here. You get attached to the characters and their circumstances, when things start to happen you get swept up in action just as they do.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Last few chapters of the book were somehow even more fantastic than the chapters leading up to them and the payoff at the end is awesome.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Sometimes survival isn't enough.
    Any additional comments?
Man I wish that there was more to this series then just 2 books! I'm guessing that it just didn't attract the appropriate attention when it came out in 1996, but man, it should have. This is a very fun read. I'm off to go buy the next book in the series. Much love to Perin and Weis.
    nice story!

Setting the Stage for the World of Eberron
The Dreaming Dark series gives the reader a great start into understanding the feel of the Eberron Campaign Setting for Dungeons & Dragons.
The Series has a pretty linear progression
The City of Towers takes place in the City of Sharn, introducing the reader to the Warforged, the Dragonmarked Houses.
The Shattered Land takes the reader to Xendrik, and uncovers a glimpse into the world of the Eberron Drow.
The Gates of Night takes this adventure to the Planes and sheds some light on the driving forces of this universe.
Personally I loved the first book, the City of Sharn is so full of adventure it almost shames all other campaigns I have read about, and I suppose that is why my interest in the series waned as the story moved from this city to uncover the setting as a whole. The adventure gets to be a bit "over the top" especially as it runs into the final book of the series.
The change in narrator for the 3rd book didn't help with this... at all.
    Interesting beginning
What did you love best about The City of Towers?
This is an introductory novel to the then new campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons. Every now and then, mixed with and in explanation of some parts of the plot, there are excursions on the races, societies, and magical aspects of the world. The way the story and the explanations mingle together is well crafted (a long way since the Forgotten Realms and better than Dragonlance).
Who was your favorite character and why?
The heroes of the story are all interesting. Maybe my favourite is Daine, probably the main male protagonist. I like that way the character has religious doubts and doubts altogether on what to do next, after the Last War. That's the kind of character I like best.
What three words best describe Alex Hyde-Whites voice?
Certainly a professional, maybe his voice sounds too "old" for these characters (all young or young-ish). Nice rhythm.
    Any additional comments?
I'd suggest this book to any D&D geek, like myself, or to anyone who wants a good introduction to fantasy fiction. The narrator has certainly done his job, but I would have preferred a younger voice. He tries to give each character their own unique voice, but sometimes the effect is slightly comical (the warforged and occasionally Lei). Still, the narration is smooth and the audiobook is certainly worth its credit!
A New World, a Pleasant Surprise!
This book definitely came as a pleasant surprise. Being new to the world of Eberron, I was delighted to discover a world setting for which I had been searching for a long time, one that combines fantasy and sci fi in such a way that opens up huge possibilities for storytelling and worldbuilding.

After some rather harrowing adventures in the desert, they are followed home by a swarm of empathic earwigs. As if a psychic bug infestation weren't enough, the town's water supply has suddenly died up. Where there was once fresh water to spare, there is only a trickle of brackish sludge. Theorizing that the water came from a source beyond the desert, Shaani proposes an expedition to re-establish the town's water supply. Xoota, of course, is voted to go with her. Crossing the desert has never been done - and with water in short supply, the task seems impossible. But the ever-helpful Shanni appeals to the town patron Benek, and his love of cryogenically frozen brides, to back the project. What follows is the adventure of a thousand lifetimes.

Rats and rodents where the rubber hits the road.
If you could sum up Red Sails in the Fallout in three words, what would they be?
    Inventive, imaginative,fun.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Red Sails in the Fallout?
When, tongue in cheek, the main character's name the intelligent plant, Russel.
    Which scene was your favorite?
When the land shark gets attacked by the razorback pigs. The troupe losses it's water in the attack. Stranded in the desert with water gone the group gets blown off course only to end up in more danger when they crash their land sail into an oasis.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No I found coming bask to it after a few hours a good stint in the post apocalyptic world.
    Any additional comments?
This is a romp with gamma irradiated rodents that have lots of character. It shows just how animalistic humans can be and how human evolved rodents, bugs and plants can be.
    Wigwig is a real treat!
    Worth the read.
    Universally Enjoyable Science Fantasy
If you could sum up Red Sails in the Fallout in three words, what would they be?
Imaginative, Sometimes Humorous, and Incredibly Compelling.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I enjoyed each of the characters - aspects of the two main characters reminded me of my wife, actually. Though so far I haven't been able to appropriately describe the comparisons to her. As far as I know, my wife is not a mutant.
What does Amanda Carlin bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Amanda Carlin is one of the best readers I've heard. I'll be looking for more from her.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I was surprised by some of the emotional moments that occurred. I really don't want to spoil those. In fact, I'll lend a bit of perspective; I'm in my forties, and I've read hundreds of books during my life - an eclectic variety comprising multiple genres. On rare occasions, I've picked up something produced by Wizards Of The Coast, as I am an avid devotee of role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons and Gamma World.

Following close on the heels of The Mark of Nerath, Don Bassingthwaite picks up the action and takes the characters into the eye of a new kind of Dungeons & Dragons adventure... Imprisoned in the void of a ruined universe by vengeful gods, Tharizdun - the Chained God, the Elder Elemental Eye - shares his exile with the Progenitor, a pool of liquid crystal that is all that remains of the Abyss that destroyed his universe. Enter our heroes Albanon, Shara and Uldane - all three adventurers readers will know from The Mark of Nerath. They thought their quests were over and done with, but danger still burns like the embers of a smoldering fire in the tall grass.
The Progenitor was locked safely away, guarded by Albanons dead master, but early on our heroes realize it was stolen and released in the presence of the green dragon Vestapalk as he fell at Sharas sword. Now, alerted to the danger of the liquid crystal by a mysterious cleric who claims allegiance to an order that has protected the substance for time immemorial, they must go in search of the dragons body, to ensure his demise has not been exaggerated. What they discover has consequences that could change the world...

Decent but not the first book
Without reading "The Mark of Nerath", this book makes a lot less sense. Everything in this book was established in "Mark of Nerath", except the titular Temple of Yellow Skulls.
Ignoring that, it's a decent adventure (if those elements were actually removed so it could stand alone, it would be an excellent adventure) and it is easily better than the next book in the series. I just can't escape how much it refers to the previous book. It fills in all the details, the characters spend a lot of the adventure talking about the events of the last adventure, which isn't marked as part of the series, or available on Audible.
Honestly, I'd skip this one unless you've read "Mark of Nerath". If you have read "Mark of Nerath", you probably won't need me to tell you that you ought to skip this book. If for some reason you read this first, it completely and utterly spoils "Mark of Nerath" as they rehash, in detail, all the major plot points.
Also, the second book has a different author. I blame this for ruining the second book (Oath of Vigilance", and I feel it's worth knowing about before you potentially become invested in the series.
