    Meh!
I have read a few Patterson novels and considered him a good thriller writer. I was disappointed with Lifeguard. This book felt like a PG-13 thriller movie. It was just a little too 'amazing' and ridiculously predictable how everything lined up. For me, this was a book where I got just deep enough into it when I realized it was a bad read that I felt obligated to finish the story. It was a painful event. I should have stopped when I realized I didn't like it.
and then more crap hits the fan
You think everything is going to work out for the main character, and then more crap hits the fan. Normally James Patterson with a guest author are either hit or miss. This one was a hit. I finished in 2 days and felt myself trying to think ahead.
    A really different Patterson.
Had more than one mystery going at once..kept you turning pages!! A typical Patterson! Something different every time you think you have it figured out.
    Unexpectedly good
Interesting throughout the book, Interesting characters, suspenseful, good and bad guys galore including police officers, FBI among them. I liked the ending best
    Another Patterson Hit
This is a quick, fun read -- perfect for vacation. Patterson never fails to entertain.

Those who like suspense and a lot of plot
First off let me say that I am a James Patterson fan, but despite that fact this book was excellent. It is definitely a suspense thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. I think what I like the most about it is the way in which the story is told from the begining of the novel. It is as if the introduction is laid before you piece by piece in such a unique format that it draws you in from the very begining. Definitely a great fun fiction book to read.
    Wow what a great story
I enjoyed this audio book from start to finish. Great story line, reverting experience,

The female corpse snagged along the Mississippi riverbank wasnt the only life that washed ashore that year. Throughout the South, Hurricane Katrina had inflicted death and destruction as quickly as a serpents strike.
In this third Jack Vu mystery, Air Force Investigator Jack Vu finds himself displaced by Katrina, along with countless others. He has lost his home, a boat christened The Arctic Wing", which had provided him solitude and solace on the water, much like the Mekong Delta of his youth. Forced to now live in an overcrowded barracks, Jack actually looks forward to investigating the apparent suicide of a female Air Force officer in Louisville, Kentucky because it affords him a clean private hotel room.
One death soon becomes two, and Vu finds himself partnered with Big Easy cops Dorene Gates and Bruce Hill, one of whom is being held for murder (implicated by a delicate snip of pubic hair) and the other who is bunking in with the reluctant investigator.
Louisvilles Southern justice and dark past come back to haunt its residents. From a Mississippi riverbank, to historic Churchill Downs, Jack must tread carefully through tainted jockeys, bantering musicians, and even a quirky Elvis impersonator in order to uncover their secrets. Social classes collide, proud residents protect their own, and some secrets are best taken to the grave.

    enjoyable series debut
Mary Ryan is a bitter pastry chef at an upscale restaurant when she finds the body of one of the kitchen workers stuffed in a laundry bag. Worried that her detective ex-husband will get the case, Mary's relieved to find the detective in charge is the ex's partner -- for a while. As Mary investigates the people involved, we are treated to the dirty secrets behind the scenes of a successful restaurant, from illegal workers all the way up to prima donna chefs and crooked managers. This is a good mystery and Mary is an interesting protagonist. I look forward to others in the series.
    Entertaining read
The fascinating thing about this book was the setting. The high-end restaurant industry serves as the back-drop for the story. The author pulls in the illegal immigrant issue, restaurant politics, and a cadre of interesting twists. The story moves right along, and I was interested in both the story line and the main character from the beginning, even though she does a couple of stupid things that were probably author convince to advance then story.
Deft writing, interesting milieu, good characters
I enjoyed this tremendously, it was a great read and just what I needed to take my mind off my broken foot, including 6 hours in the emergency room. I liked the protagonist, but also her mother, her friends, even some of her enemies. The action scenes and background and pauses for contemplation all worked for me, I didn't guess the murderer, which was good. San Francisco and Berkeley are expertly portrayed, and I'll never go out to a nice restaurant around here without thinking of this book!
    thoroughly enjoyed
A great book set in San Francisco. I felt I was there with Mary. Would highly recommend this book. Read
    What a charming book!

After the conviction of a drug baron earlier in the year, a new kingpin secures the hub of drug crime in Bristol. But how secure is he? A series of seemingly unconnected murders, accidents, and dying drug users slowly reveal the web of violence.
Narrow strips of a cut-up photograph arriving piecemeal at the Bristol Herald's offices may hold vital clues, but will the completed puzzle reach McLusky in time to prevent more deaths? The private lives of both McLusky and his rival DI Kat Fairfield take unexpected turns also, making the atmosphere at Albany Road station icier still.
    Members Reviews:
    An entertaining read.
McLusky is getting used to his transfer to Bristol, but now he and his officers have a big problem. Drug addicts are turning up dead, and the culprit is heroin which has been contaminated, some of it with anthrax virus. The police must track down this heroin before more people are killed. In the meantime, a few other people have also been murdered who turn out to be connected on the drug dealer side of the equasion. The police must find the connection between these people, and connect it to the tainted heroin. Its a good book with a somewhat irritating McLusky, always going his own way, and a narrator who reads at a very slow pace. He does read well, though, and there are some extremely humorous, (dry humor, my favorite kind) points in the book.
    Good read!
Well written book. I actually experienced the freezing weather described by the author. Loved the ending!

What made the experience of listening to Dead to Me the most enjoyable?
The character sparkle with real life. You feel for the characters and want justice.
What did you like best about this story?
There was the murder story and the story of the 3 women police officers both keep your interest.
    Superbly read!
Great story and easy to follow even if your not a fan of Scott & Bailey. Read fantasticly by Julia Barrie it keeps you enthralled from start to finish.
    Three and a half stars!
I love Cath Staincliffe's novels and I love her writing for radio and TV. I am also a huge Scott and Bailey fan and love the Manchester setting and references. This novel is OK but rather disapponting. It is a prequel to the TV series and fulfils this purpose very well. It gives a good insight into the backgrounds of Janet, Rachel and Jill and the relationships between them. However the actual crime story moves along far too slowly and the concentration on the lives and backgrounds of Scott and Bailey is at the
expense of the plot. I would give this 4 stars for the narration, writing and my love of Manchester and the characters. However it gets 3 stars for the pace and plot !
suspense keeps you on your toes till the end
Where does Dead to Me rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Kept me hooked to the end. Couldn't wait for the next chapter ( limited myself to 3 chapters a day) would listen to it again and again. One of the best listens for me.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Dead to Me?
One of the best moments was when Jill took revenge on her two timing husband I laughed all day.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
the scene I most enjoyed would give away the ending as I was sooooo wrong about the culprit.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I wish I could have listened to it all in one go but time would not have allowed it.

    Publisher's Summary:
Rolly and Abigail Rogers, residents of Kanab, Utah, come from a long line of dedicated pot hunters who scour the desert Southwest in search of valuable antiquities. When the couple fails to return from a weekend skeleton picnic, a pot-hunting trip, along the desolate Arizona Strip, local Sheriff Charley Sutter enlists the help of J. D. Books, law-enforcement ranger with the Bureau of Land Management.
When Books searches the missing couples home for clues about their disappearance, he discovers that the house has been burglarized and a valuable collection of ancient Anasazi and Fremont Indian antiquities has been stolen. Soon a search-and-rescue operation finds the Rogers truck and trailer at an abandoned campsite near an ancient Anasazi ruin that has been recently excavated. The evidence there leads Books to conclude that Rolly and Abigail were overpowered by a group of assailants.
Sheriff Sutter assigns an attractive young deputy, Beth Tanner, to investigate the burglary of the Rogers home under the watchful eye of Books. Together they track some of the stolen property to a pawn shop in the nearby town of St. George and, ultimately, to a young Navajo man with a criminal record and a serious drug problem. Keeping this man alive long enough to make him talk, however, proves difficult.
Books and Tanner soon learn of a shadowy group of armed Indian police who patrol vast areas of tribal and federal lands in search of anyone desecrating ancient Native American burial sites. They also discover other unsolved disappearances in the region. Could the disappearance of the Rogers and others be the responsibility of this group?
As Books and Tanner close in on those responsible, Books own survival skills will be tested when he is unwittingly drawn into a remote part of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. There, he is forced into a deadly game of cat and mouse, in which the hunter becomes the hunted and only one person gets to go home alive.

    Sloppy editing detracts
Generally, I liked this book; however the lack of competent copy-editing was a significant distraction. In the first chapter, a couple named âRogersâ leave their home late FRIDAY afternoon to go pot hunting. Several chapters later, itâs said they left late SATURDAY afternoon. Not a little thing when each chapter begins with a different day. Clearly, timing is essential to the story. Next, is it the Rogers or the Rogerses? The author switches back and forth. Stick with Rogers. Also, the phrase is âdecibel levelâ, not âdecimal level.â And U.S. magistrate judges donât set cash bail. Thatâs not done in the federal system. Little things, but they detract from what seems like a good read.
Good book and a fairly accurate description of what a ...
Good book and a fairly accurate description of what a BLM Ranger does. I would like to see more books by Michael Norman with his character J.D. Books. This also accurately showed the problems with archaeological theft and vandalism and how it has been an accepted practice by many generations for a long time. It also highlighted the commercial value of these artifacts and the lengths people are willing to go to market and procure them. Some of JD Book's actions are questionable, and his savvy and law enforcement experience certainly didn't kick in for his final actions that he took.
