Publisher's Summary:
From this acclaimed writer comes a new thriller of knife-edge suspense and masterful plotting.
The little girl appeared in Central Park: red-haired, blue-eyed, smiling, perfect - except for the blood on her shoulder. It fell from the sky, she said, while she was looking for her uncle, who turned into a tree. Poor child, people thought. And then they found the body in the tree.
For NYPD detective, Kathy Mallory, there is something about the girl that she understands. Mallory is damaged, they say, but she can tell a kindred spirit. And this one will lead her to a story of extraordinary crimes: murders stretching back 15 years, blackmail and complicity, and a particular cruelty that only someone with Mallory's history could fully recognise. In the next few weeks, Kathy Mallory will deal with them all... in her own way.

Old Friend, Reaquainted
I had not read the Mallory stories in many years and came across this one, deciding to try it to see if author Carol O'Connell still had the ability to hold my rapt attention. Well, she does. The character Mallory still manages to intrigue, surprise, confound and consume readers. Another complex noir with lots of characters with hidden pasts and motivations. I'm once again hooked and look forward to many more hours with Mallory.
Another Wonderful "Kathy Mallory" Book
I have all of Carol O'Connell's books, and the "Kathy Mallory" ones are my
absolute favorites. I ordered "The Chalk Girl" for my Kindle and read it the day it was downloaded. This is one of those books that is hard to put
down. As I was reading it I was so afraid that I wouldn't like the ending
because the "bad guy" seemed almost untouchable. However, Ms. O'Connell
took care of it...as usual. And, reading the little boy's diary throughout
the book was...well, scary, sad and enraging. She did such a gread job
with the storyline and characters in this book. Even though I wish she
had her books come out more frequently, I guess this way I can't compare the
new book with her latest one. And, so each new book becomes my favorite.
If you like a really well written mystery with a very unusual young female
police detective, read "The Chalk Girl". You won't be disappointed.
Fully up to standard
Riveting from the word go. The story of a vulnerable child in a park, and two other vulnerable children in the past, and people who have been damaged by other people.
Kathy Mallory, detective and sociopath, threads her way unerringly through the thickets of concealment and deceit, using whatever means lie to hand, including the child, regardless of the protests of the more humane Charles; but, as ever, she will let nothing stand in her way.
Some readers choose to take heart from the episode of the fireflies, believing it shows a softening, a growing humanity, in the sociopathic Mallory. They are mistaken in doing so. Everything she does, even with the fireflies, is a means to an end; she will cherish the child while there is something to be gained by it; but she will destroy the child if that's what it takes to reach her goal. She is prepared to alienate Charles completely if he tries to stop her; his enduring love means nothing to her, just as other people's affection means nothing to her.
