    An excellent surprise
This book really was a surprise. Written in the 1950s it described the cases and activities around a group of pathologists, forensic pathologists and the criminal and legal world. Unlike its sometimes unbelievable american counterparts this is down to earth and happens to real people! give it a try!
    Embarrassed
I found this very dated: I know it was set back in the 50s (I believe) and around 'my' time, but I did squirm with the narrative and the dialogue!
    good story
    Any additional comments?
this story covers three crimes and their outcomes. the courtroom scenario at the end was good.
I enjoyed jonathan keeble's performance of the story bringing the characters to life.
looking forward to listening to grounds for appeal.
Easy listen - not terribly exciting
I thnk I have said it all in the title but I will just add that the storyline never really took off, it was a bit like cycling in Holland, flat with interesting scenery.

    fast-paced, terrific mystery novel
I love mysteries and have read more than my fair share. I loved Angela Gerst's A CRACK IN EVERYTHING. The lawyer protagonist, Susan Callisto, is a gutsy, endearing, heart-of-gold heroine who draws us in from the get-go. This is a terrific mystery full of political intrigue, plot twists and turns, love interests--past and present--and fully rendered characters such as one of Susan's clients, Nino Biondi, the 73-year-old restauranteur whom Susan thinks of as her stand-in grandfather. Without giving anything away, characters are not always whom they appear to be and Susan must navigate the mine-fields inherent in biotech companies with secrets to hide, love interests with secrets to hide, and clients with secrets to hide. I couldn't put this book down. I was riveted until the very end. Rendered in a first-person narration, we love being in Susan's head with her witty inner monologue and pithy commentary on the modern day ironies of life. She's a heroine we want to stay with and want more from in the future. And hopefully the dashing Detective Lieutenant Michael Benedict will join forces with Susan in her next mystery adventure.

    Publisher's Summary:
Gillian Roberts witty, literate Amanda Pepper mysteries are irresistible. Following the adventures of Philadelphias finest English teacher/detective, the books crackle with humor and suspense. When a class trip coincides with a murder, Amandas concern over the behavior of one of her students makes him the prime suspect. Dusting off her sleuthing skills in an effort to clear him, Amanda finds enough suspicious suspects to stuff a cheese steak sandwich. As she struggles to overcome a pompous principal, a romantic reference librarian, and a slew of listless students to get at the truth, Amanda starts to wonder if she should look for a new line of work. Adam and Evil showcases Roberts and Pepper at their snappy, wise-cracking best. Christina Moores narration adds just the right touch of exasperated frustration. Listeners who enjoyed Amandas earlier adventures in books like The Bluest Blood and The Mummers Curse are in for another treat.
    Members Reviews:
As always Gillian Roberts delivers a great mystery
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes I would. It's not my favorite of the series, but it's very good and kept me guessing.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes, it kept changing and evolving into something entirely different.
Would you be willing to try another one of Christina Moores performances?
No. She's the reason I only gave this book a 3 star rating. She's not a good reader, especially compared to Susan Denaker who also reads the Amanda Pepper series.
Do you think Adam and Evil needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
The series does build on itself and so the next book is the follow-up in a way.

    Good book
This was my first Justice Security novel and I really liked it. I was very upset with the ending, but they can't all end happy. I liked the Security people a LOT but the children in this one are the ones I really took to. Good book, will read more of this series.
    Great read
This was a great read. Good story, lots of twists. The only downside was that X-Ray was not enabled and there were a lot of people to keep up with. But editing was good and overall it was a good read.
    Loved this Book
I liked this book almost as much as the first on. I can't wait till the author writes more books.
I feel this is a good YA book .

    As always, very exiting
The story, as in all his stories, shows just the right amount of drama, romance, suspense, and just down right exitement! I could hardly put the story down.

    Really enjoyed this book
Really enjoyed this book. Dana writes about the dark side of small town Pennsylvania as well as I've ever read. I can see this novel set in Wilkes-Barre, or Scranton, or some places in Carbon County, all with the background in steel or coal and implicit in nepotism, vice and small town criminals that watch too much of The Wire or The Sopranos. Note only is he dead-on with his descriptions but the last names of the characters are dead-on as well (one is nicknamed Alphabet because of the seemingly improbably string of vowels and consonants that make up his name but is totally common in the area I grew up in in NEPA.)
For some reason, though, I keep picturing Mike The Hook as related to Feet in James Lee Burke's In The Electric Mist With The Confederate Dead. And I seem them both looking like Tony Siragusa.
For good Pennsylvania crime fiction, check out Dana's books.
    Never Waver
Ben Dougherty and Willie Grabak had seen more than their share of Penn River corpses. Donte Broaddus had the misfortune to turn up dead with two bullet holes over his eyes, on a trash heap behind the Allegheny Casino. Russian mobsters waded in and began throwing tough boy orders around, sharks circling, ready to gobble down any small whirlpool shiners.
Variables surfaced rapidly. The gang squad reported a peaceful day but Donte had been selling H, and he stepped on the wrong toes, OG ride, or not. Just when one thinks it might be safe to move to the suburbs, a novel appears that slices open the underbelly seedy side to reveal the stagnation and degradation of humanity, the total disintegration of anything resembling morality.
No holds are barred. Cringe, then drink from the rusty tap water of life. Should they continue the charade, shake murderers hands, or arrest with the aim to kill? Thanks, Dana King.
    This author ROCKS!
Oh, yeah! I've read a few Dana King novels now and each one is golden. They start as they mean to go on, with plenty of action, great characters, and keeping the reader guessing.

    Critic Reviews:
"A compelling new series." (Sunday Telegraph)
"A gutsy tale well-grounded in local colour." (The Times)
    Members Reviews:
A new set of characters, but just as gripping!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely. Anyone who has enjoyed Barbara Nadel' s other books is likely to enjoy this. Featuring two new detectives, and set in London in the recent past ( the lead up to the Olympics), this gentle thriller is nonetheless quite gripping and is an intriguing start to what I hope will be a great new series.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Private Business?
There were many, the mysteries around visiting the new church building; moving objects; mysterious actions etc. but the climax was particularly gripping.
What does Paul Thornley bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Paul Thornley is a very good narrator who brings the plots to life in an interesting and gripping way, allowing the listener to build clear mind pictures.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
A Private Business can never truly be private ... someone, somewhere knows your secret; but who? How will it be used?
    Trust no-one!
    Not impressed
Would you try another book written by Barbara Nadel or narrated by Paul Thornley?
I kept trying with this book but could just get into it. I don't know if it was the cockney geezer accent, or the God complex, but it didn't work for me. Disappointed
    A Disappointing Download.
If this book wasnt for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?
The plot was muddled and many storylines seemed inconsequential and did not tie up at the end of the book. Cannot think many people would enjoy it.
Has A Private Business put you off other books in this genre?
    No
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Paul Thornley?
Someone whe can give better voices to the different characters.
What character would you cut from A Private Business?
    Roy.
    Any additional comments?
I was not really interested in listening to the book, but did as I had paid for it.

Terrifyingly authentic, London-set debut crime novel with a psychological edge, by an ex-Met detective. Perfect for fans of Mark Billingham, Peter James and Stuart MacBride.
DI Sean Corrigan is not like other detectives. The terrible abuse he suffered in childhood hasnt stopped him enjoying family life with his wife and two daughters, or pursuing an impressive career with South Londons Murder Investigation Unit. But it has left him with an uncanny ability to identify the darkness in others a darkness he recognises still exists deep within his own psyche and battles to keep buried there. Now Seans on the trail of the most dangerous killer hes ever encountered. The perpetrator has no recognisable MO, leaves no forensic evidence and his victims have nothing in common. But Sean knows they were all murdered by the same man. Now all he has to do is find the evidence, convince his bosses and stop the killing before his adversary gets too close to home

    A grower
I was not sure I was going to enjoy this,it's a slow burner but worth it,
    Daft plot, unbelievable behaviour
I really didn't like much about this book, having listened to the first chapter I nearly tossed the book as it was the meanderings of 'our killer' salivating about his kills.
I did stick it out and was drawn into the story.
As the story progressed I became unhappy with the characters, none at all likeable, and also with the behaviour of the police in planting evidence etc.
The plot was plain daft - we didn't really find out 'why', and the lead detective had an awareness of the criminal mind that was ridiculous, understanding things from a scene that just HAD to be assumptions.
Towards the end I did flip through several chapters as the drawn out saga was just too much to bear.
There was a lot of nasty descriptive violence which wasn't necessary.
This one is not for me at all, though I can see from the reviews that many people enjoyed it.
Enjoyable but nothing like Stuart MacBride
    Any additional comments?
I often wonder if the people reviewing these books have ever read the books they compare them with. This is nothing like Stuart Macbride or Mark Billingham. An interesting plot, slightly contrived, but on the whole a good listen. I think the main character will develop in series, however if the next title moves to NZ, I trust audible will find a New Zealand narrator and not depend on someone trying the accents. I thought the character had landed in the outback of Australia, not in Queenstown New Zealand. A minor point perhaps. Overall an enjoyable book.
title is an excellent description for this book
What made the experience of listening to Cold Killing the most enjoyable?
Good narration. Never a full moment. Easy to visualise characters.
What did you like best about this story?
    It's twists and turns.
Have you listened to any of Robin Bowermans other performances? How does this one compare?
No. But have just downloaded another book by same author and narrator.
    A good solid modern detective
I liked the character created in this with DI Corrigan. I also liked that other characters in the book were important too and had depth. It has a great twist in the story and the end leaves you thinking we could be hearing more from Corrigan (and maybe someone else). An enjoyable read.

Sarah, nosy-but-nice English teaching fellow, and her husband, Alex, are at it again. Due to an unfortunate accident that incapacitates a friend, Sarah's abrasive aunt Julia is offered two free tickets with Whirlaway Tours. After much arguing and little listening, Sarah finds herself serving as Julia's companion for the trip. Eyebrows are raised, however, when the group meets in Boston's Logan Airport and Ellen Trevino, the tour's garden expert, doesn't show. Sarah begins to worry that Ellen's problem may be worse than a delayed connecting flight. As strange clues begin to pile up, Sarah calls home to ask Alex to follow up on Ellen's disappearance. Sarah and Alex manage to scrutinize facts and motives from two separate coasts, but Sarah's penchant for snooping may finally have gotten her in too deep....
    Members Reviews:
This author is a joy to read; never gets stale
New Englander Julia Clancy receives two free tickets to join a tour of
European gardens when her friend Lillian Garth, who organized the tour, falls
down a set of stairs. Julia decides to take her niece, school teacher Sarah
Deane, along as her guest. Sarah does not really want to tour a bunch of
stuffy gardens, but a free trip to Europe sounds too good to pass up. Sarah
also learns that an old friend, Ellen Trevino, who she has not seen in
several years, will serve as the tour guide. When the group board the plane
at Logan Airport, Ellen is not there. The police find her corpse at a Maine
    rest stop.
..... The tour seems strange to Sarah as no one appears interested in gardens,
yet there is no respite even in the tranquil locales. The participants act
weirder and weirder, and the tour guide almost drowns. Sarah decides to
learn what is going on without her spouse Alex to help her. He is busy
searching for Ellen. Sarah cannot back down from trying to learn why the
group is acting so strange even after her life is threatened. If she does
not show a little more caution, Sarah may find her amateur sleuthing career
    ended very soon.
...... THE GARDEN PLOT is a wacky, but lovable mystery novel that stars the
sensational Sarah Deane, mostly going solo in this novel. J.S. Borthwick has
written a refreshing tale that is made more interesting by the support cast
and the locale. No one does a Maine cozy (except perhaps Ms. Fletcher)
better than Ms. Borthwick, who, by taking her show on the road, adds new life
    to an already wonderful series.
    ......Harriet Klausner
    Seemed a bit long.
My favorite part of this book was the setting. Although not a botanist at heart, I enjoyed the descriptions of the inns, hotels, gardens, etc., that are a part of this European trip. Sara Deane and her aunt Julia find themselves filling in a couple of vacancies on a European garden tour when the tour leader ends up taking a tumble down her cellar stairs and can't go. Then, Ellen Travino, a colleague of Sara's and the botanical 'specialist' who is also supposed to go, ends up missing and presumed dead. Everybody in the tour group is under suspicion, and Sara puts herself right in the middle of everything. Although the story seemed kind of long (by the time the book ended I was more than ready) it was still an enjoyable read.
    Excellent mystery
This was my first Sarah Deane mystery. I happened to pick it up at my local used bookstore.
