    A Sound Four Stars
This novel is the 6th in a Dulcie Schwartz feline Mystery series. If you enjoy Gothic-Regency era novels you will get behind this series. It reminds me often of Georgette Heyer novels.
We have a Doctoral student, Dulcie Schwartz, who is working on her thesis, and finds herself at a new passage of discovery, which sets her mind, and outside settings to the spooky, dark, and gothic when the moon is almost full, and she sees persons in abnormal circumstances, and a woman is brutally attacked.
The series has taught us that Dulcie has a couple of gothic friends, her cats. There is Mr. Grey, now deceased but still guiding Dulcie through her life, and little Esme, her current cat. The cats are able to speak with Dulcie, but Dulcie has difficulty interpreting their warnings and messages. The two cats work as a team.
As I've written before, these novellas, novels are sometimes above my educational level. Yet, I feel challenged by them and stretch myself to understand the content and get the feeling that I'm often in the same quandary (interpreting,) as Dulcie. I like to learn and Ms. Simon makes certain I will. I learned a great deal about the changing viewpoints of the academic English department. I'm still digesting that and am not sure which viewpoint I support. Had I not read this novella, I would not have had some excellent and enriching discussions with friends about it.
So, I enjoyed the book. Yes, I did figure out the culprit but was interested in the 'why?' more than the 'who?' this time. I learned a lot. This book is a sound four stars to me.
Mr. Grey and Dulcie in another mystery!
This is not the best of the Mr. Grey mysteries. While it is nice that no one dies, the story bogs down with Dulcie's thoughts as she goes from one thought to another. Not enough of the thesis novel gets uncovered and not enough interaction with thr cats. Did like the introduction od a new kitten character. Although not my favorite, it is still a good read.
    Grey Dawn
I have two cats and would have liked the story to be about the cat solving mysteries, not the human.
    Gothic Romance
And by the title, I mean a romance with the gothic genre. Dulcie Schwartz is a graduate English major working on her thesis which involves an unfinished gothic novel written in the eighteenth century. In the first couple of books, it really helped to be an English major or at least remember what it was like to be one, to appreciate the books. Simon has loosened up in this latest offering, making it more accessible to the general reader but retaining the literate tone. I think of it as a sort of re-worked Northanger Abbey with a ghost cat: a heroine obsessed with gothic novels lets her imagination run away with her. On the other hand, Simon gives us a dollop of supernatural doings with Dulcie's psychic mother; her dearly departed cat Mr.

    Members Reviews:
Tantalizingly Dark but Lightened Up With a Few Welcome Laughs
I'm not much of a mystery or thriller reader; my tastes lie in the direction of general mainstream fiction. But I do love Sue Grafton's Alphabet Mysteries. When I happened to pick up A Bitch Called Hope, recommended by a friend, I immediately got a hit of style as sassy and hip as Grafton's. I was hooked. It's no sin to compare one author to another; in this case I mean it as a big compliment. The characters are flawed, they don't all tell the truth, and they do stupid things -- all of which made me care about them and how it all turned out. I loved the turns of the plot and how the characters danced and slipped through it in their own crazy ways. Don't get me wrong, it's not a comedy -- it's tantalizingly dark. But I did laugh out loud several times, which made it all the more enjoyable.
    Perfect Title and Execution
They say you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover or title. But with a novel like A Bitch Called Hope, how can you not? I liked this one before I ever cracked the spine. (Figuratively speaking, since I pretty much exist entirely in the digital these days.)
A Bitch Called Hope, with its clever play on words, is Lily Gardner's debut and the story of Lennox Cooper, disgraced former cop forced to play PI, who's drawn into investigating the murder of a family friend, which may or may not involve her girlhood crush. I love the private detective genre, but there always needs to be a reason beyond just a job. Chandler taught us that any job worth doing is worth doing right, but in Marlowe he also gave us one of the most richly complex characters in literature (and the real trick there was the veneer that he wasn't).
Lennox isn't just doing a job. For one, it's not a job she loves. She wants to be a cop but messed up a little while back, first by having an affair with a fellow married detective, and then by letting her heart get in the way on the job, a double whammy. But that's precisely what makes Lennox and Bitch so compelling. You're not reading about an ace detective cracking a case in rainy Portland; you're reading about a flawed human being unsure what she's doing with her life (and ain't we all?)
Sketchy priests. Underachieving sons. Out of touch mothers. The Boys Club. This is the world Lennox must navigate if she's to both solve the mystery and come out with her soul and sense of purpose in tact.

    Sketching Leads to a Corpse
WHY DID YOU DIE IN THE PARK? is a question recently widowed Marge Christensen asks herself many times.
A year after Marge's husband, Gene, was murdered she is in the process of finding a way to secure her financial future, stay out of her children's lives while creating a new life for herself.
Moving from the family home into an apartment wasn't easy, but she could neither endure living in the same space or afford to keep the house. The new apartment is stretching her savings, but it is within walking distance of a park where her acute artistic abilies have plenty of subect matter. That is until a rustle in some bushes leads her to discover a hand protruding from newly turn earth.
Her find brings detective Pete Peterson back into her life and her questioning mind leads him down several unexpected paths. The story picks up steam when Marge gets a frantic phone call from her best friend. The friend's wandering husband has been arrested in a motel with a prostitute for the murder of the young bank examineer. Lisa wants Marge's help to find who has framed her husband.
One of the funniest scenes in the book is when the two go on the streets to locate the prostitute. Neither is prepared for the underside of Seatle night life or its tragic consequences.
A great afternoon read with an old friend with plenty of twists and turns to keep your attention.
Nash Black, author of SANDPRINTS OF DEATH.
Unfortunately, Not As Good As The First Book
I enjoyed the first book in the Marge Christensen series and was very interested in see what has happened to her in the year since her husband's death.
This second book, however, was not as compelling as its predecessor. While the mystery aspect itself had potential to be great, I felt it was weighed down by too much dry rhetoric about accounting reports, etc.
Some of the activity in the book was simply goofy. Marge and her friend dressing up as hookers to go investigate in a bad area of town? Please...
Another point that confused me was why Marge felt such a sense of responsibility for her friend, Lori, when Lori was pretty much an ungrateful hag throughout most of the book. At the same time Marge's poor son was dealing with some really rough issues in his life and while Marge kept feeling the urge to hug him and offer her support, she didn't until the very end. I was left wondering what was up with Marge's priorities.
One thing that did carry over from the first book was Marge's denseness. We are asked to believe that this woman can investigate deaths much more efficiently than the local police force, and yet she seems to overlook some extremely obvious clues and dangerous people.
Finally, religion creeps into this book in a much more blatant way than it did in the first book.

Other than a critic, who'd kill a Broadway play? Playwright Abigail James has long been fascinated by "revenge tragedies", those theatrical classics about getting even. But all of a sudden, she's living in one: The set of her latest Broadway hit has been vandalized, actors horribly attacked, a designer blinded with acid, the brilliant director terrified into hiding. Clearly, they have all committed some grievous wrong, terrible enough to prompt this orgy of destruction. But whom did they wrong? The police are clueless, so James and her colleagues see only one option: They'll examine their collective sins and pinpoint the injured party. And then they'll exact some revenge of their own.

    Excellent read
The hook goes in and you can't stop reading. It has an excellent plot with a peek into the backstage world of theater.
    Two Stars
I have to confess I didn't finish. I found the violence too graphic.
A taut and beautifully written murder mystery.
Although I first read this book many years ago I have never forgotten its cast of characters and genuinely shocking but satisfyingly believable denouement. The theatre world of New York is rocked when a number of prominient professionals become the victims of viciously personal attacks. A stage manager loses his hand-an actress is disfigured when her face cream is laced with acid... Gradually the link emerges; many years in the past all of them were members of a one theatre group-but why are they being targetted now? Who wants revenge so badly and why? None of them can imagine who holds this grudge. While being a real page-turner this is a genuinely profound character study and the central characters are well-rounded and complex. The plot turns are credible as well as fascinating and the finale is truly explosive. I strongly recommend this to any-one with an interest in detective stories, whodunnits, strong female leads or just fresh and insightful writing.

    Multiple mysteries for Tilda
Satisfying third entry to the "Where Are They Now" series. Good mysteries, yes there are several for Tilda to figure out, and she does her them solved, finally. Lots of humour, characters from the previous books making appearances, and very little Nicole helped make this a fun read. I'm hoping there will be a fourth book.
    A Comic Reunion
I found this book by Toni L.P. Kelner to be a 'Blast from the Past.' The setting is a small town in Cape Cod area, and the event involved is a film adaptation of an old comic strip.
There is the usual cast associated with making a film, security, and our female sleuth, Tilda who is a journalist with a great chance to do an article about the originator of the comic strip and stars of the film version.
It is a reunion of sorts, until, walking back to her rented room, Tilda sees the murder/ and attempted murder of the main Male Star and his Personal Assistant. Tilda squeaks away from being a casualty herself. What is going on?
This book moves at a great pace and I truly enjoyed reading it.
    Great as usual
In this series, I keep trying to recognize characters. Kelner has such a fresh way of developing her people, both from a southern and from a Boston perspective.
    Another winner...
Toni Kelner has written another smart, funny mystery about entertainment writer Tilda Harper. This series is getting better and better.
    Another winner from Kelner!
Freelance writer Tilda Harper's specialty is tracking down former stars and writing profiles of what they are doing at present. But when she's offered the opportunity to observe the filming of Pharos, a graphic novel-turned live action film, she jumps at the chance. The lead actor, John Laryea, may be popular now, but as a child he did star in a popular Saturday-morning kids show.
Then she realizes that the driver of the limo that picks them up at the airport is another of the stars of that show, though he's not admitting it. When she meets the film's director, Joni, Tilda is surprised to be asked to track down the reclusive creator of the graphic novel that is the basis of the film, known only as "Leviathan".
The investigator in Tilda accepts eagerly (besides, she's getting a free pass to Comic-Con!), but even she runs into a brick wall.
Tilda is such a well-realized character, and her relationships with her friends and family are so incredibly human and honest and funny. It's a pity that Ms. Kelner is so busy writing short stories and editing collections, because it prevents the amazing writer from creating more novels.

    A great follow-up to DEADFOLK
"Royston Blake don't wipe arses for no f******. I'm just being meta...you know, meta...I'm just saying like." BOOZE AND BURN has solidified the Mangel Series as some of my favorite books. I spent far too much time away after reading DEADFOLK...But I'm happy to say that BOOZE AND BURN held it's own and I'll be reading the next three books before the year is out. In BOOZE AND BURN, another outsider has arrived in the city of Mangel and kids are causing all kinds of disorderly mess. As Blake says so eloquently, "I'm Royston f****** Blake, and every c*** knows where I stands on outsiders. They don't scare us and I ain't fooled by their ways." The book takes place a couple of years after DEADFOLK, and Williams does a brilliant job making it stand on its own without dumping information about the events in DEADFOLK on the reader. Readers interested in a truly unique voice and a heavy dose of black humor should look no further.
    Fags and lager ennit?
Hilarious sequel to Deadfolk, but you don't need to have read that first to appreciate this mad story of Royston Blake. A great page turner/swiper of a black comedy. Looking forward to reading the third one, King of the Road.
It was a painful read but might make a good movie
The main character is painfully inept. Almost like one of the supporting characters in TRAINSPOTTING. The writing is decent but not inclined to read the rest of the series.
    Four Stars
Fascinating read - very different characters!
Booze and Burn by Charlie Williams
Don't let the title of the book deceive you. It may be the worst-named book of 2010. Instead, think of Dadaism, the artistic movement that flourished post-WWI and was seen by its participants as a protest against the barbarism of the war and an intellectually stagnant society. To many Dadaism appeared to be gibberish, but others gleaned insights that they believed broadened their minds and appreciation of art. So it is with Booze and Burn.
Charlie Williams might be a genius. Even after reading the book and dwelling on some of its intricacies, I don't know the answer. The protagonist is anti-heroic (to say the least).

Second in a series, but it can stand alone
I read 'Ginger Dead House' immediately upon finishing 'Sweet Ginger Poison'.
Like the first, this story was fun and interesting. I liked the continuation of characters and the plot that kept me guessing.
As a stand alone story, it is a great cozy read and I barely put it down. As the second in a series, it was disconcerting.
I had to stop reading to check to see if I had missed a book in-between. From the end of SGP and the start of GDH, it seems that a great deal of time has gone by in Coreyville.
The beginning of GDH opens with the surprise of the ladies having already started a B&B. There had been no lead up or background for this venture. I guess the ladies just had a whim and ran with it. Although Ginger can be impulsive, she didn't strike me as flighty in the first book. I don't know why they would give up their homes and previously profitable businesses to do something so risky, and the author didn't explain.
I adjusted my mental picture and read GDH house as a stand alone story, ignored my previously imagined backdrop, and make a conscious effort to accept changes that seemed unbelievable. Taken individually, this tale is just as interesting as the first, but I do hope the author builds bridges instead of leaping over gaps in future books.
Good Easy Read- Cozy Series? or not?
I agree w/ Jill K. when it comes to wondering if I missed something in between the two books. Although, Ginger has not given up her shop... It is very briefly mentioned but she does still own the cake shop- Addie now has 10% ownership in it since the last fiasco. Jane and the others did though give up a lot to go into the B&B it seems. This story line, again good but rolled a bit quickly in bringing out character development and it was more of Ginger doing sleuthing than a lot of the great "cozy mystery camaraderie" that I truly love in cozies. I will still look for the next as this is an intriguing bunch of ladies... I am still waiting to see a recipe or two at least in a future book. Preferably, Sweet Ginger Cake... Mr.
