"Fast-moving and tightly plotted, with strong characterisation and a likeable protagonist, this is an extremely promising debut" (Guardian)
"Dark Winter is an exceptional debut from an exciting new talent. David Mark is an original and captivating new voice" (Val McDermid)

    Excellent rainy afternoon listening.
Would you try another book written by David Mark or narrated by Toby Longworth?
    yes.
Narrator was great. Just the right sort of weariness, and down-troddeness for the story, combined with a cosiness that drew me in. Performed characters well, with lots of different accents, which were all believable and none annoying.
I think this was an author debut? This story didn't set my world on fire, but I did really enjoy it. It seemed to end very quickly, with a bit of a fizzle, which slightly ruined it for me. I'd be happy to try other works by him in the future.
Would you be willing to try another book from David Mark? Why or why not?
    yes.
    Dark Winter good read
    Yes good book
Narrator does a sexy Scottish accent
I also like pharaoh she was witty
Memorable moment was discovery of killer
    Fantastic read.
What did you like most about Dark Winter?
The whole thing, story, characters, the pace it went at, the narrator.
Who was your favorite character and why?
DS Mcevoy , he was interesting, real and had his own issues to deal with as well.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes but unfortunately could not, but listened at every opportunity.
    Any additional comments?
Read it not one to be missed.
Gripping Yarn - a real page turner
Thoroughly enjoyed this tale set in the East Riding of Yorkshire. The author sets the story up brilliantly before unleashing the ending. The characters are well researched and believable (Im sure I know some of the drunks described!)
Would recommend this to anyone. Im looking forward to the next book in this series

    Publisher's Summary:
Kelly Ingram is a rising star who has everything going for her - great looks, a livewire personality, enough talent to get by on, a new TV series, and a new lover. She also has an agent and a producer who hate each other, but they still manage to work well enough together to keep Kelly's career moving in the right direction.
But then a friend is murdered, a harmless scriptwriter who should have been no threat to anyone. The scriptwriter's mother enters Kelly's life, a history professor named Fiona Benedict who dislikes everything the actor stands for. Mediating between them is Sgt. Marian Larch of the NYPD, assigned to investigate the murder.
What Marian turns up is a tale of ambition and envy and betrayal going back 15 years. Kelly, Fiona, and Marian - three women who have absolutely nothing in common except the act of murder that brings them together - take turns telling the story, which ultimately demonstrates how friendship can blossom in even the unlikeliest of circumstances.

Reader and book were not a good match
I love Barbara Paul's novels and was excited to get the audio version. Unfortunately, there were a lot of mispronounced words, poorly stressed sentences, and pacing problems. Maybe more the director than the narrator?
    Very disappointing
Normally I really enjoy this author's books but this one was spoilt for me by the narrator who had the most irritating voice and whose reading was grating and uneven. What a pity!

    Members Reviews:
    Fun fast murder mystery
This story builds from the first book in this series. Not having to create Tilda's world, Ms Kelner jumps right into another fun murder mystery. Lots of suspects, New roommate and romantic interest, Tilda displays her love for old classic tv shows and those who portray them. Fun fast read.
    If you like light reads
I got to chapter two and gave this to Goodwill. I'm sure Ms. Kelner meant well, but I couldn't get into it. The whole plot was superficial, with name drops everywhere, that I didn't feel were that necessary. If you like light reads, you may enjoy this...but I couldn't get past the writing style.
    fascinating amateur sleuth
Tilda is a freelance entertainment reporter whose biggest client is the magazine Entertain Me! She is called into a conference when the stars of Cowtown, a 1950s cowboy TV show talk to her about the western resort they want to build in Massachusetts. Brothers Tucker and Hoyt Ambrose and Cynthia Barth want Tilda to write an article about their resort and find guest stars from their show to make appearances at their resort.
Tilda goes to interview 1950s pinup girl Sandra Sschrest known as Sandy Sea Chest. Thanks to Tilda, Sandy has a nice business selling memorabilia on the web from her glory days. Shortly after the interview, Tilda returns to Sandy's home to pick up the camera she left there, but finds the woman dead with blood everywhere. The photos she showed Tilda are missing but Tilda has gotten the pictures for the Cowtown article on the net but someone shoves her into the street and steals the copies she made. When another person associated with Cowtown is killed, Tilda knows the crimes are obviously related, and Tilda intends to find out who the culprit is though someone is watching her and will take care if her if she gets too close to the truth
Toni L.P. Kelner has written a fascinating amateur sleuth tale that centers around the pinup girls of the 1950s. People at that time assumed these scantily clad young ladies were bad girls and decades later even with the sexual revolution many refuse to place that vocation on their résumé as they are ashamed. This feeling plays a key role in the homicides as the intrepid reporter diligently investigates the murders. Readers will root for the admirable heroine and seek her previous Where Are They Now investigation, Curse of the Kissing Cousins.
    Harriet Klausner
    Good Light Reading
This is not P.D. James or Dorothy Sayers. It is a light read for a Summer day on the beach or waiting for train, bus, trolley or plane. It is the work of a professional who strips away plot complications, avoids depth in characters, and hands us a story easily followed...and enjoyed. The heroine, a freelance writer specializing in media subjects, has a few friends, a sister-psychiatrist, and numerous acquaintances. She is not fully drawn. giving the readers room to refine the image.

I enjoyed the historical back-drop of this mystery. Bringing to life historical figures like Pontius Piolet and Caiaphas along with temple rituals gave the story a "realistic" feel. I also enjoyed the complexity of the story. I highly recommend this book.

    a hysterical historical musical romp
This mystery is a follow on to the Cadenza for Caruso mystery. Caruso has been forbidden to interfere in a murder investigation by the police, so he convinces Geraldine Farrar, a soprano at the Met opera, to investigate for him. Narrated in the first person by Geraldine, the novel provides amusing portraits of many famous Met singers and the life they led in WWI New York City. Ms. Paul's portrait of Geraldine is apparently fairly close to the real thing -- a passionate, intelligent, witty, talented, and beautiful woman. Though not a big fan of opera (but a big fan of NYC), I enjoyed this humorous mystery tremendously. I liked it so much, that if I were not an honest woman, I'd have told the public library I lost the book and paid the fine. Hello, publishers! This is one of many vintage mystery novels that deserve to be back in print so a new generation can enjoy them!
United States - New York, 1915
Opera fans will love this light, humorous story which fictionalizes the doings of the New York Metropolitan opera diva Geraldine Farrar. They particularly will appreciate the book's reenactments of parts of operas in which Farrar performed her "signature" roles. Farrar's beauty, fiery temper, and numerous flirtations become part of the plot in which a visiting French baritone who has antagonized everyone uses a throat spray laced with ammonia. His vocal chords, indeed his voice, are permanently damaged. "He might as well be dead," intones Farrar, and soon her words come true. With herself as a major suspect, Farrar, urged on by Enrico Caruso, initiates her own investigation, which turns out to be a delightful romp.
Surrounding Farrar are stars who were a major part of her life during the Mets "golden age." The author has created wonderful fictional sketches of Caruso, Pucinni, Emmy Destinn, Pasquale Amato, Toscanini, and actor David Belasco. Even Farrar's young female fans, the famous "gerryflappers," are given a part to play. The short Epilogue tells you what happened to these personalities in the following years.
A more serious leitmotif is the constant references to the looming European war. Most of the singers are from lands increasingly drawn into the conflict. Memories of good times there are recalled amid the growing realization that that the war might last, that America may be drawn into it, and that the inevitable war relief tours will become standard fare. These tense moments are lighten by descriptions of the singers hangouts, the Met and Belasco theaters, Mulberry Street on the Italian immigrant Lower East Side, and, above all, the numerous backstage dramas.
Meddling, merriment, murder and mayhem at the Met
Paul had to do a lot of research to put this delightful story together and she has done a superb job of portraying historic opera stars in a fictional situation.

    Breezy Read
Very fast paced and pleasant read. Good for one sitting. At the conclusion I felt that I had listened to a classic radio mystery, complete with explantion of how the hero solved the crime.
The biographical info provided was certainly a fan of pulps but went to great ends to boost Hubbard's rep and to me was trying to sell scientology and it's creator. The story ws written pre-dienetics and scientology so they they don't spoil a pretty good yarn.
    more pulpy thrills from Hubbard
It's over the top, it's politically incorrect, and it's loads of fun to read. You'll find the story old-fashioned, but it's an excellent example of why the pulp fiction craze of the twenties and thirties was so successful.
A walk in the footsteps of Thomas Jefferson
If you are a fan of the Lewis and Clarke expedition, or Thomas Jefferson and his creations at Monticello, then this is a must read. A modern mystery and a book on a significant part of the history of our country.
    Liked most of the storyline
Liked most of the storyline.......but towards the end it seems it could have had a more interesting ending. It just lacked something towards the end.. But I still gave it 4 stars.

    Good story fairly well told
There is a difference in how American & European authors tell a story. Good American storytellers seem to be more direct in their plotline, connecting all of the dots & explaining, in the context of the story, what may seem at the outset extraneous characters or incidents. Good European authors aren't that regimented. And so it is with J. Robert James & "Sandman." I felt there were significant leaps of faith in the progress of the storyline & in the connecting of people/things to the crime under investigation. Regardless, the story was great & I enjoyed learning about the 2 detectives. This is my first St. Cyrn-Kohler novel. I'm looking forward to others in the near future.
    The Best of the Series
On the way back from southern France, St.Cyr and Kohler are immediately sent to the scene of the murder of an eleven year old girl who is the heiress to an industrial fortune. She is the fifth victim of a rapist/murderer who has been dubbed "The Sandman". He kills young girls who are dressed in their school uniforms. After trying to rape them he kills them will a knitting needle driven through their hearts (or maybe he tries to rape them after killing them). What is different about this killing is that the needle has been shoved up through her throat into her skull.
But the Inspectors quickly discover that the little girl is not the heiress, but her best friend. They both attend a convent school in Paris, where they are taught by Sister Celine, who believes the devil is in all little girls. Celine's sister is a prostitute who works in one of the Wehrmacht brothel's where her specialty is dressing up like a schoolgirl or a nun. The heiress lives with her uncle and aunt (who are childless) in the house of her parents who were killed in the bombing of Coventry while visiting family in Britain. The Uncle who had been passed over by his father in favor of his younger brother, has come to live in the family mansion with his much younger wife.
Once again the Inspectors find themselves knee deep in it again. Their suspects include the madame of the Wehrmacht brothel, a defrocked priest who runs an escort service and passes himself off as a representative of the Vatican, a wounded SS Major who is a war hero, not to mention the Uncle and Aunt. While trying not to get murdered by the Wehrmacht and SS by asking the wrong questions of the wrong people, the Inspectors must move around the most seedy parts of Paris that cater to the most base impulses of soldiers on leave from war. Very well done.
    Zeb Kantrowitz
Atmosphere? Ahh, yes. Writing? Ahh, no.
The good news is, the author has clearly done a lot of study of Occupied Paris, and has crafted an interesting plot, with all the period flavor one could possibly ask for. Although sometimes it rang a bit false (the French citizenry is rather nonchalant about telling Germans that the war is going against them, for example, or talking about the Resistance), overall I found it an interesting and believable milieu.
    The problem is the writing.
