Do not go gentle into that good night, wrote Dylan Thomas, and Canadas notorious Ladies Killing Circle has taken his advice to heart. In Going Out with a Bang, the dangerous dames have brought together an explosive mix of authors from across the country.

    Editorial Reviews:
The Ladies Killing Circle is back with another exciting anthology of murder, conspiracy, and dark humor. The seventh such anthology from this clever and sharp group of mystery writers, Going Out with a Bang contains over 20 stories and poems of jilted lovers, would-be thieves, and fatal sibling rivalries. Performed with a warm and intense delivery from veterans such as Bernard Clark and Jo Howarth, Going Out with a Bang is the perfect audiobook for those long winter nights where you find yourself relaxing next to the fire with a glass of Irish coffee in hand.

Wish I had my money back - a true disappointment
I don't usually spend this much for a book because I read at least one a day, and I live on a limited budget. However, I love anthologies, and I thought it would be worth a splurge for once. I wish I hadn't bought it because it was really not worth the money. In fact, I don't think it would have been worth the money at $1.99, which is lots less than I paid. A couple of the stories were pretty good, but none were outstanding. A couple of them, I just didn't bother to keep reading after the first few pages. A couple more, I skipped to the end to see what happened without having to struggle through the whole story. In general, quite a disappointment and certainly not what I expected from a group of writers. They should know better.

    Publisher's Summary:
In the tradition of Naked Came the Stranger and Naked Came the Manatee, a collective parody of campus culture that is as much wicked fun as it is "post-postmodern."
Who killed Eric Davenport? A senior mathematics professor at Underhill College has been found dead in his office, the victim of murder. At Underhill, a small liberal arts college with a pricy tuition and a pampered student body, all of the students are close to their professors. But at least one loved Eric Davenport in a deeply inappropriate fashion. Some hated him. And then there is the faculty at war with itself. And the idiotic administration. And the twin boys who live next to campus. And whats with all those praying mantises?
The collective work of Sarah Lawrence writing class 3303 - R, taught by novelist Melvin Jules Bukiet, here is a send-up of contemporary campus life that is also the latest installment in an inglorious literary tradition of wacky fun. And the mayhem hasnt stopped.
Soon, a student is found dead in the library, and, from the quad to the dorms, crime scenes and crises begin to multiply. A wealthy alumni donor becomes alarmed. Enter a libidinous medical examiner. Depicting rampant insecurities and raging egos, and with a cast of characters from conflicted faculty to student cliques, from hemp kids to Ugg girls and the J Crew crew, Naked Came the Post-Postmodernist takes us on a journey some may find eerily familiar.
    Editorial Reviews:
When Eric Davenport, a senior mathematics professor at a pricy liberal arts college turns up dead, it tips the small, insular world of his campus upside down. Faculty, administration, students: Who's to blame? Written collectively by the Sarah Lawrence College writing class instructed by award-winning novelist Melvin Jules Bukiet, this parody of campus culture fused with a modern murder mystery is a fun, up-tempo romp. Actor Jesse Einstein's personable performance makes this story an exciting, enjoyable listen that will ring strangely true for anybody who's spent time on campus.

    book review
This book was ok. It didn't move smoothly,I think, because of the number of people who contributed to the story. I liked the plot, but getting from point A to point B was difficult at times.
    Shame Sarah Lawrence
I've taught freshman writing for over 30 years and believe me, if my students had put together a 'novel' as poorly written as this, it never would have made it to the publisher...and this one was written by a prestigious school's writing class!!! Shame. Purple prose, stilted dialogue, no character development . And nothing 'postmodern' in the whole book. The promotions far outlived the product. And I'm very glad it wasn't MY class that put this together.
This was a fun read. Particularly if you attended Sarah Lawrence and ...
This was a fun read. Particularly if you attended Sarah Lawrence and get the inside jokes. NoFun in particular was quite amusing. Also, the silliness of the plot matched the silliness of the school.

    Editing errors but good mystery
Engaging story about a culture I know little about. I liked the characters and the story flowed well but it could use a good editor.
    Enjoyable
Enjoyed this book. It reveals the dark side of an island we know little about.
    Good read
Good story and read, but needs a better editor. For instance, "rouges" should have been "rogues." Way too many contractions and grammatical errors, all of which are distracting. One positive note, though....not any curse words....thank you for that!
    Cuba Blue
This was a political crime mystery set in Cuba. It was well written, and like most good books left me with unanswered questions about the characters and plot wondering what happened to them at the end of the story. I would be interested in reading more of these characters.
    Tantalizing and Intriguing
This book will find you wondering just what Cuba is really like and gives a "flavor" of the Cuban people. I found that it was both tantalizing and intriguing...lots of intrigue. It makes me want to read more of this authors work and figure out how these two main characters are going to resolve the challenges to their relationship.

Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
In this gritty, gut-wrenching sequel to Loose Ends and Above Ground, Jack Taggart continues as an undercover Mountie whose quest for justice takes him from the sunny, tourist-laden beaches of Cuba to the ghettos of Hanoi.
His targets deal in human flesh, smuggling unwitting victims for the sex trade. It is a story fraught with raw human emotion, and characters so real that they could not be figments of someone's imagination. Jack's personal vendetta for justice is questioned by his partner, until he reveals the secret behind his motivation, exposing the very essence of his soul.
This is the world of the undercover operative: a world of lies, treachery, and deception. A world where violence erupts without warning, like a ticking time bomb on a crowded bus. It isn't a matter of if that bomb will go off - it is a matter of how close you are to it when it does.
    Editorial Reviews:
In the third book of Don Easton's Jack Taggart Mystery series, the hero receives a tip-off on Russian smuggling that leads him to suspect a major drug organization. What he finds instead is far more sinister, as he and his partner Laura travel to Cuba and Vietnam to uncover an international network of white slavery, human trafficking, and child prostitution. David Drummond proves a great match for the hard-nosed Taggart, his voice managing to be both smoky and smooth. It's redolent of great noir and helps conjure the dark world that Taggart finds in Angel in the Full Moon.
    Members Reviews:
    The best yet
Jack is becoming a real person and less of a caricature. I liked this book much more than the previous ones.
    A Great Read!
A good read for any Jack Taggert fan! Intriguing plot and the action keeps the reader glued to the book right to the very end.
Believable Undercover Policework with Extraordinary Twists
Jack Taggart is cop who defines the law as having two sets of rules - one for the bad guys and one for the good guys. The law can be bent, broken, even blasted apart by the good guys as long as it serves a greater, honorable purpose. For the bad guys, if you choose to break the rules you'd better realized that the consequences may be considerably harsher than those written down in the law books.
In Angel in the Full Moon Don Easton exposes the ruthless, violent and disgusting underbelly of prostitution, child prostitution and human trafficking. Jack Taggart uses methods that shock the reader in his pursuit of the leaders of the criminal organization that exploits unwitting, desperate, illegal immigrants. His hatred of these predators reveals a dark motivation that exposes what drives Taggart in his beyond the rule of law, but clearly defined personal interpretation of justice.
Angel in the Full Moon is a gritty portrayal of the dark side of our society. Its realism is a truism - an accounting by personal exposure from a man who lived in a shadow world of policing, one that few cops know, let alone the average citizen. As a former police homicide detective, I know the vagaries of the human psyche, the poor streets where forgotten souls converge, and the machinations of police procedure and politics. Don Easton has captured all of these in a riveting story that takes moral depravity to a new level. I assume that Taggart's excesses in his pursuit of justice are simply an expression of artistic licence by Mr. Easton. Or are they?
Angel in the Full Moon is a great read!
    Like every mystery...

    Publisher's Summary:
Dixie Flynn's boss wants her to write a fluff story for Father's Day. Dixie doesn't do fluff. Investigating the origins of a cryptic classified ad, crime-beat journalist Dixie Flynn finds herself entering the seedy realm of a brutal Russian mobster. Before she knows it, Dixie's simple missing-father story has turned into a violent battle of wills as she tries to help a woman escape a life and death struggle with the mob. For Dixie, the pen is mightier than the sword, but it's going to take some handy work with a pistol if she wants this story to have a happy ending.
The riveting sequel to Angel with a Bullet, "a fast-paced combination of violence and sex," Kirkus Reviews, Devil with a Gun leads Dixie Flynn to an incendiary confrontation with the most ruthless killers in San Francisco.
    Editorial Reviews:
Narrator Amy Rubinate's performance is like velvet wrapped around a steel core, her tobacco-infused voice bolstered by the clear and measured pace of her narration. She gives heroine Dixie Flynn a tough, no-nonsense manner that's softened by an innate compassion as she investigates what seems to be a simple missing-persons case. Before she realizes what's happened, Dixie becomes involved in the underworld of the Russian mafia, and the story begins to take a number of unexpected turns as she attempts a dangerous rescue mission that might have fatal consequences. Listeners will appreciate how Rubinate takes time laying out the complex threads of this gripping thriller.

Fun read, great pacing, wonderful cast of characters.
I have enjoyed this series from start to finish. Dixie is hilarious and full of fire, one of my favorite heroines (finally someone who is independent and not all about some guy). Kept me engaged all the way through, great pacing. Pick it up and enjoy the ride!
    Fantastic!
Really loved this story. Dixie and her cast of misfits once again become tangled up in one of her news stories.
Second book in the Dixie Flynn trilogy is even better than the first!
Second book in the Dixie Flynn series and it's even better than the first.
This time, the intrepid muckraker has to write a father day's piece and Dixie always find an edge to her stories. This time it involves the Russian mafia and a missing dad. If you like your mysteries laced with humour and violence, get this trilogy of novels. I sure wish Grant would make it a series.
    Fun read
This is a fun read, but just unable to visualize the fight scenes. sexual scenes were silly. Don't think I will read #3. First two books were enough.

Everyone who lived in Saint Anthony Parish, Louisiana, grew up hearing stories of the old Hindel Mansion. The one cast in shadow and sitting alone. Later they would laugh and shake their heads over the wild imaginings of today's youth. Then a family named Rawlins moved into the mansion and within days the laughter turned to a cold and paralyzing fear. Now another child has disappeared from the mansion and Detectives Hays and Olivier know they need to move fast before they have another bloodbath on their hands. Will they be in time to save this child?

Hard to find a good werewolf
This was well structured story about a house that was home to an ancient evil, read werewolf here. The two main characters are just men, who are doing their job, but they have to face a reality that flies in the face of what they know. Donovan Hays and Jack Olivier are the two men who have to investigate the death of a young girl in what is very similar to a past crime that happened at the same location the Hindel Mansion. They think the killer is the same man, but he is supposedly in England with his father. Then the killer is glimpsed and it is supernatural, a werewolf. This story has a supernatural element, a bit of a mystery and a romance involved in it. I enjoyed this story because the protagonists are a couple of likeable characters. They aren't super human just a couple of cops, who are a little bit afraid of what they face but are determined to bring the case to a close. I won't tell much more about what happens. Just know it is a good constructed story that was enjoyable to read. I am hoping the sequel is as good as this one was.
    Atmospheric Paranormal Fun
Masterful storytelling! This book was a surprise for me. I was expecting a paranormal romance with some untidy bits. What I got was a compelling, exciting, tension filled, terrorizing, atmospheric paranormal horror, romance thriller. Hot biscuits! How did the author manages to pull this off?
Well she thought up a story that grips you from the start, locates it in an area steep with mystery and adds a cast of characters that are well written. Then adds surprises.
First surprise two of the main characters, (Jack and Donovan), are male friends/partners who aren't gay. I really love how the author portrayed this friendship between partners. The banter and love between them was exactly the type I see and hear between my brothers and their best friends. Second surprise she was able to make me sympathetic to the rougarou. Since he viciously murders a child, (actually two), as well as a dog, (I am a dog lover), I would not think it possible for me to feel any sympathy for him. Yet I did. Kudos Judith Ann Mcdowell. Along with the rougarou is Chandra. The woman who is the center of the romance in this book. The mixed feelings that Jack had were, in my opinion, accurate. As was the grief experienced by the murdered girls parents. Each of these characters are well written as are the supporting characters.
The author painted scenery with her words. You can feel the heat from the Bayou and picture the creepy mansion as well as the cave.

Fun read, great character, highly recommend
Lola is one of those characters who stick with you long after you've finished the book. The story was engaging, playful, and kept me glued to the page until I finished. Definitely recommend!
    Derivative
I am in the process of reading both of the Lola Cruz PI books (I got the second one from the library before noticing it was a second book). While neither of them are bad books, neither are either of them particularly good books. Probably not good review form, but I'm going to cut and paste this review for her other book because my opinion of them isn't based on the plot, but on their derivative and watered down back story. Lola Cruz is a PI with an eye for newspaperman Jack and her boss Manny. She has a nosy but loving mother and a very concerned and involved family who are concerned about the dangerous nature of her career, a career, as other reviewers have pointed out, she isn't terribly good at, tending to stumble into solutions rather than 'detecting' her way through her cases. There is a lot of talk about her underwear drawer, her low cut swishy skirts and thin t-shirts and a lot of steamy 'will she won't she' scenes and wait for it, her boss is somewhat mysterious.
Does this start to sound familiar? Stephanie Plum is the Italian-Hungarian template and Dolores Falcon Cruz, Sophie Metropolis, Bubbles Strohmeyer and probably a half dozen more literary characters are the watered-down Mexican, Greek and I believe Polish (I could be wrong on that) wanna-bes. Somehow Stephanie (and her creator) do it all so much better, tighter, funnier and more readably.
The Dolores story lines and mysteries really becomes who cares...it's all about the bumbling PI and caliente newspaper writer Jack and their attempts to find a place to do what both of them have supposedly been lusting after since high school. Oh and she really wants to figure out what makes Ranger (I mean Manny tick).
Fun filled engaging read with a feel of Evanovich
I loved the wonderful, full of life character that is Lola. Starting out by walking in on her own wake. Yes - her own wake! And the craziness does not stop there...

    Refreshing writing style, interesting story
How many times can you tell the age old "femme fatale uses everyone to get her way" story? One more time, apparently!
I purchased this book because of a short story that I read in a compilation called "100 Dastardly Little Detective Stories". In that compilation I was impressed with Henderson straight ahead and rough style in what turned out to be Chapter 1 of "No Free Lunch".
Well, it turned out that straight ahead style is good, but not good enough to make the book a page turner.
I forced my way through this book, but would consider other Henderson works just to see if I had a knee jerk reaction to this book.
    unpleasant
I only read the first 38 pages of this book, which is why I'm giving it three stars rather than two; maybe it gets better. For me, this book is just too unpleasant. While Raymond Chandler liked to portray a seamy underworld full of lies and deceit, Philip Marlowe was a good guy who was never completely jaded, someone who still felt compassion and still believed in honor. But Henderson's protagonist just seems like someone who hates the world. I have a friend who has to take medication to avoid psychosis, and if she misses a pill she says she feels as though the entire world and everything in it is rotting. Henderson seems to see the world the same way, and I find that no more enjoyable than my friend does. But the book is competently written and I was slightly curious as to how it would turn out, so if you don't mind the unpleasantness you might enjoy this.
    Good P.I. Yarn
Resembling the tired-of-life, cynical Phillip Marlowe and the tough-mindedness of Mike Hammer, Jack Hagee travels about New York in search of a client's former fiancee. Some excellent action mingles with the outstanding descriptions of New York city. The only drawback is the focus on underground sex that fills the last quarter of the book. Other than that, a grade A mystery, best suited to be read on a rainy night.

Better Than the 2nd Book, But Still Not Great
I decided to go ahead and read the third book in this series hoping to reconnect with the enjoyment I experienced with the first one. While this book was better than book #2, it still didn't pull me in.
The mystery aspect was okay, but too much of the storytelling was taken up with unnecessary details about Marge sketching, painting, taking walks on the beach, her internal dialogue regarding her children, men, etc. She's just not that darned interesting and she is irritatingly judgmental.
I gleaned what information I needed about the next book from its description here on Amazon, so I doubt I'll be purchasing it. Too bad because the first book was really good.

Good plot, but a bit repetitive as author sorted out suspects. Author's style is rather blunt, so the heroine's romantic inclinations fall kind of flat. However, I enjoyed the book and will read more of

    Vacation with Murder
Marge Chistensen is excited to take a well earned vacation at the time-share resort of Ocean Shores that her son, Robert earned as a reward for his outstanding work.
The scenery is beautiful though the November weather demands a heavy sweater for protection from the winds off the ocean. Robert mets a young woman he had know from his marriage, but to Marge it seems like friendship more than romance as the young woman is married. The husband is an obnoxious pusher who delights in taunting his companions and co-workers.

    Just ok
The story plot is fair..it is a light mystery story with a few twists. The dialogue is elementary. The narration is read in a very stilted manner. The narrator does try to vary the voices as she reads but her inflection is not good .
