    Pretty darn good
I enjoyed Mark Peckham's voice and the more I listened to the him speak found that I enjoyed the book more and more. I have to admit that at first I didn't think I was going to like the book. I can't really say exactly why I felt that way, but I continued to listen and the longer I listened the more interested I became. Over all I felt the book was pretty darn good.

    Release date: 04-10-14
    Publisher: Orion Publishing Group
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Things aren't going so well for Brian McKechnie. His wife was attacked in their home, his cat was brutally killed and now a man with a suspiciously erratic accent is blackmailing him. When the police fail spectacularly at finding out who's after him, McKechnie engages the services of London's most unusual private eye.
Duffy is a detective like no other. A bisexual ex-policeman with a phobia of ticking watches and a penchant for Tupperware. But what he lacks in orthodoxy he makes up for in street-smart savvy and no-nonsense dealings. Intrigued by McKechnie's dilemma and the apparent incompetency of his ex-colleagues, Duffy heads to his old patch, the seedy underbelly of Soho, to begin inquiries of his own.
Helped by some shady characters from his past, Duffy discover that while things have changed in the years since he was working the area, the streets are still mean and the crooks walk arm in arm with the blues. Full to bursting with sex, violence and dodgy dealings, Duffy is a gripping and entertaining crime novel with a distinctly different and entirely lovable anti-hero. Read by Rupert Degas.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    Yes. See below.
What did you like best about this story?
    Yes, see below.
Which character as performed by Rupert Degas was your favourite?
    Duffy.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
If we were in America, Id go to a private detective. You could try Duffy. He might do a job, if he was free.
    Any additional comments?
This is the first Duffy novel by Dan Kavanagh (Julian Barnes). In the light of the attention given to Cormoran Strike, the private detective in The Cuckoos Calling by Robert Galbraith (J. K. Rowling), readers should try Duffy. Kavanaghs unusual mix of thriller and comic novel is of a different order from Rowlings derivative excursion into detective fiction. Although very different in tone and setting, Duffy bears comparison with John Banvilles moonlighting as Benjamin Black for his Quirke novels.Duffy is set in a very seedy and intermittently dangerous Soho in the 1970s. While Duffy is honourable to a degree, he is far from Raymond Chandlers knight, making his way down Los Angeles mean streets. Duffy deliberates one evening whether to go to a singles bar for a woman or a man, and although his visits to massage parlours and peep-shows advance his investigation into the increasingly threatening blackmail of a client, hed probably be there anyway. Crooked policemen; an extremely nasty villain; and a dodgy client to whom Duffy gives the advice pay-up or find someone to knock-off the blackmailer these are very mean streets. Where The Cuckoos Calling is over-long and quite contrived in its characterisation, especially of the private detective, Duffy is very tight, getting through its plot with considerable economy while still conveying the mostly internal locations quite memorably and building up great tension. I wonder why Julian Barnes keeps his distance from Dan Kavanagh.

    Excellent book
I like books on serial killers. Just reading how sick their minds are. This book was fun. There's a series of arson fires and people dying. A reporter and Arson investigator team up in a round about way a discover there's more to the arson that they originally thought. You know who the bad guy is through the whole book and you know why he is one step ahead of them. You have fun trying to figure out how they will catch him. Enjoyed reading this exciting story.
    EXCITING, AUTHENTIC AND ENGROSSING
This is an extremely accurate mystery about fire and arson investigation. It will take you into the way things are truly done, within the confims of a fictional book. The book is loaded with twists and turns, and has a major shock right in the begining. It was hard to put down, and I enjoyed every minute of it...even after the 3rd reading. I was one of Ms. Mills technical advisors, and can testify to the time taken with research. An excellent read.....buy it and enjoy!!!!
A Typical Serial Killer Tracker Novel!
Being on a long airline flight, I was desperate to read something and I picked this book up at a local airport. Well, I was kinda disappointed. This book isn't anything neat at all, but it is not bad though. It is a very predictable novel of tracking a serial killer who is an arsonist and loves to hurt, burn, and kill people. I would save my money and buy a book that would make you think for awhile!

    A Delightful Mystery
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes. I think most people will find this story an easy listen that is quite enjoyable and totally unbelievable.
Have you listened to any of Lee Ann Howletts other performances before? How does this one compare?
Haven't heard Howlett before but her voice is well suited to this type of story.
    Any additional comments?
I received this audiobook as a promotional gift from the narrator and audible.com Thank you.
    Cute and cosy
This is a very light and fluffy mystery, but a fun way to spend a few hours. The smart older lady with the sweet-natured bimbo sidekick make a very enjoyable sleuthing pair. There are quite a few holes in the plotting, but it's frothy and likeable. I found the narration ponderous, but cranking the speed up to 1.25 fixed that.
Couldn't finish ... Will have to buy the book.
    Any additional comments?
The narrator seemed too monotone for me. During dialogue her voice was fine, but the rest of it turned me off. But the story idea still intrigues me so I'll have to get the paperback when I can afford to.
    Decent Story...Could Use Better Narration
For this being a self-published book, I must say that I am impressed. It appears that this is the first book of this nature for author Susan Sundwall, and she did a pretty good job!
I always think that I want humor while reading a mystery, and if that's the kind of book you like, then you should like The Red Shoelace Killer. It was hard at times to take the book serious though due to the funny content of the book!
I didn't care for the narrator, Lee Ann Howlett, too much though! I would have taken her to be quite a bit older than what her picture appears based on the sound of her voice. Maybe it's that she doesn't typically read mystery books...I don't know, but I wasn't impressed.
I felt that Sundwall did a thorough job of creating solid characters throughout the book, it was just the story that I had my dislikes with. I am a fan of hard-core mystery books, and this just doesn't fit within that category. Yes, I do venture beyond my typical likes, I just cannot say that this is a book that I really liked!
Overall, I think that Sundwall did a good job with what appears to be one of her first major writes! I also think that practice makes perfect and that this has the potential to be a decent series, should she pursue the series in the future!
    An enjoyable cozy mystery!Q
Would you listen to The Red Shoelace Killer again? Why?
I would definitely read The Red Shoelace Killer again.

    Publisher's Summary:
When Artemus Ackerman, retired magician and mayor of Calendar, hears about the first fire on Sabbath Street, he sends his publicist, Maggie Wakeling, to the fire department to find out what caused it.
Artemus, who still performs conjuring tricks for his constituents, has his heart set on turning the shabbily elegant Baldwin Theater into a museum of magic. All he has to do is convince wealthy widow Claudette Goodwin to donate the Baldwin to his beloved town.
But the theater is located on Sabbath Street, where that first disastrous fire occurred. Then there is a second fire on Sabbath Street - and a third....
Certain Claudette will never invest money in such an incendiary location, Artemus orders Maggie to follow the trail of char, first to Fire Marshal George Copeland, then to the Boys of Sabbath Street, who had so valiantly saved occupants from two fires. And finally to?
Add to the mix Mayor Ackerman's romantic attraction to Claudette, Maggie's determination not to be attracted to Fire Marshal Copeland, and the idiosyncratic residents of Calendar, and the result is a happy romp through the world of fire investigation and an introduction to people you will wish lived across the street instead of only in the pages of this enchanting book.
    Members Reviews:
    Shelly Reuben Does It Again
Albert Jay Nock, in his "Memoirs of a Superfluous Man" wrote: "History, Aristotle says, represents things only as they are, while fiction represents them as they might be and ought to be."
Shelly Reuben's latest book is a quintessential example of this idea. She brings the fictional town of Calendar to life and populates it with a panoply of wonderful people and magical situations.
Along the way, you'll meet magician, and now Mayor of Calendar, Artemus Ackerman, and his aideâdeâcamp extraordinaire Maggie. And, after two suspicious fires, Fire Marshal George Copeland gives readers, and Maggie, a fascinating course on how to reconstruct a fire scene...something our fire investigator author knows quite a bit about.
The suspense builds slowly as the mystery deepens and darkens on its way to an excellent conclusion--one which could only happen with the sensibility of a small town like Calendar and an author like Shelly Reuben.
    Bravo.
    Magic! Pure Magic!
I wanted to tell you how much I loved your book, The Boys of Sabbath Street!!! Besides the fact that you brought back your arson investigation, the fact that it was coupled with magic made it even more spectacular to me! I grew up with an aunt and uncle (Jim and Judy Marshall, AKA Dr. Evil) who spent their lives doing magic shows on the east coast, coupled with monster movie matinee. My uncle used to create monsters he would sell (or so he told us) to movie sets, the movie would come out and we would sit in the dark theatre and watch the scary movie....and the actual monsters came out of the dark into the theatre.

    Number Three Hits the Spot!
Where does Angel's Gate rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Of the HUNDREDS of audiobooks I own, seriously, I stopped counting at 280, this is in the top ten favorites list!
What other book might you compare Angel's Gate to and why?
You can't compare stories. I would say that the character Dick Henry (P.G. Sturges), though not similar, has the same appeal as the characters James Bond (Ian Flemming), Lisbeth Salander (Stieg Larsson), and Eve Dallas (J.D. Robb). You just want to hear more from this character!
    Which scene was your favorite?
When the ex-marine house mother explains to Dick Henry exactly why she needs his help!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I'm usually a "good triumphs over evil" person, so I would have to say that when the really, really, sleazy guy is arrested for murdering the really, sleazy guy, and Dick Henry's ex-partner gets the credit - it made me feel good!
    Any additional comments?
The story line was amazing! Sad but true, meets ego central! Can't wait for the next Shortcut Man story!

The First in an Excellent Series
    A VILLAGE SHATTERED
    By Jean Henry Mead
    Reviewed by Earl Staggs
This novel has everything amateur sleuth mystery readers want. First of all, there's no dilly-dallying around waiting for a crime to happen. A murder victim is discovered on the first page. When Dana and Sarah, two fifty-nine-year-old widows, arrive at their friend's house for a meeting of the Sew and So club in the Valley Retirement Village, the friend is dead. Real mystery readers also want protagonists they'd like to tag along with in the search for the killer. Dana and Sarah are like old friends of yours from the first chapter and you'll feel you're right there with them as they discover more Village victims, follow clues, and bicker as only bonded pals can do. You'll enjoy following the killer's trail hip to hip with them through each surprising twist and turn of this well-developed and smoothly written story.
Jean Henry Mead is one of those accomplished writers who can blend it all together - mystery, suspense, a compelling plot, real people, real situations, natural humor - in a story that will keep you guessing at the edge of your seat until the last page. . .and then leave you hoping there are more books with Dana and Sarah. Fortunately, there are two more in this excellent series: DIARY OF MURDER and MURDER ON THE INTERSTATE
    Two Spunky Seniors
Normally, I prefer to read a mystery series in order but sometimes things don't work out that way. I had read a few books in Jean Henry Mead's Logan and Cafferty series before I realized that I'd missed the first one. I enjoyed those books so much that I had to go back to read "A Village Shattered" and I'm glad I did.
"A Village Shattered" introduces Dana Logan and Sarah Cafferty, two spunky seniors who live in the Valley Retirement Village. Sounds peaceful, doesn't it? And it is until a serial killer begins to murder residents one by one and Dana and Sarah decide to try to find the killer before it's their turn.
What an exciting book, you won't want to miss this one.
She is a great writer, I love how she can pull you in a book. It feels like you are there with them. I couldn't put the book down until the end. It was a great story and I can't wait to read the last one she written. All her books keep you on your toes. You will never be bored.
