    Give me a break
Again and again the characters make glaring mistakes that keep them one step behind ... believing there is a leak of inside info and taking no steps to plug it; the inability to trace a fax message to it's source; failing to keep watch on a location because they believed one of the bad guys was out of the picture; these are just a few examples from the multitude of blunders. . The final straw for me was using patrol cars to stake out the known location of a terrorist (which was obviously spotted by the terrorist). Give me a break! At this point I stopped listening (probably less than 45 minutes from the end.
If you are just looking for a fast-paced action book; don't mind some obvious ineptitude along with little to no development of the characters; you might like this book. It did keep me listening almost to the end.

    good mystery read
Good read! I enjoyed this book very much. I actually picked it up at random because the synopsis sounded just interesting enough and the price was more-than-right. And I was pleasantly surprised.
I found the story engaging, the characters likable and/or despicable - where appropriate - and the mystery itself just-rightly-veiled. Unlike other mysteries I didn't get to the end and wonder how the heck I was supposed to have arrived at that conclusion or what universe the author had been residing in to reach that end. The clues were doled out in a fairly mysterious fashion with just enough hint that those "ah-ha!" moments rang true later on.
And yes, in obsessive, mystery reader style, I stayed up too late on a few occasions just to read "a little bit more". Recommended!
    Holy cow!!!!!
This is the first Andrew Gross book I have read! I know it will not be the last! This book started and the murders, threats, suspense kept building! Just when I think I know what is going on, something else happens! I was so knotted up by the middle of the book, I figured it was going to require walking for hours to drain off the tension or a large bottle of whiskey! I have already ordered two more of this author's books! He knows how to tell a story....how to drag you right into the middle of it.....and keep you steadily reading right to the end! This is an author I will enjoy following!
    The dark tide
Excellent novel, the only thing I disagreed with, was the death of Charles. I expected him to clear things gs up and get his children back.
    A finely crafted novel
I really appreciate a well written story and this is one of them. It's a story of love and of greed. A story of loss. Karen and Charlie so happily married until a bomb goes off in the underground and Charlie is dead, gone, not coming back.
As the days pass there is the sense of something not quite right. Therein is the story. Read it and enjoy.
    Master storyteller
I read this one in record time, losing a bit of sleep over it. Great story telling. My only frustration was trying to keep all the characters straight although Mr. Gross tied them up in a bow at the end.

    Well-written and fun local atmosphere
I'm reviewing a book I read from the library because I think others might enjoy it like I did, which is very much.
From the last line of the page, Holy Ghost had arrived
Having read this book before it was published, the last line was most entriging as, when a book has a new beganning for the last line, it gives others an opportunity for improvement. a second chance, whatever, as a even better story begins.

    A sportswriter writes...
I read this after a friend recommended it, and very much enjoyed it. It's an unusually stylish, imaginative tale with a very scarey premise. I'd also like to say, I thought it was very well researched. As a sports writer I covered winter sports for years, and the facts and issues the book raises about skating - and especially the enormous pressures, physical and psychological, it places on young girls - rang very true to me, even if they're not discussed openly among competitors and coaches as much as they should be. I can see that this book might ruffle a few feathers in the skating community. It certainly doesn't paint a rosy picture of what competition - and success - can mean. But inaccurate? Anything but. From skaters' weights, to the illnesses they suffer, down to what they get paid for show tours, I'd say the author did his homework pretty well. I see one reader dismiss the references to school figures as inaccurate. True, they vanished from competitive standings some time ago, but anyone like Ellen Cusak, training in the 1980s, would have been trained using them. An example? Michelle Kwan, whose age, I note, more-or-less exacty matches Cusak's. And of course, for routines, skaters still skate in figures of eight every day. It's more fun than going round in circles! Of course, the sport itself plays only a small part in the book. But the imagery works, and the slightly fairy-tale nature of the sport suits the themes of the story in many other ways. Of course, just because a book's well researched is no big reason to like it. That's all down to taste. But before savaging somebody's work for being inaccurate, it might be an idea to do some homework oneself! My word on 'Figure of Eight': read it if you like your novels dark, twisting and topical.
A creepy, chilling novel with a surprise twist at the end.
The reason that I picked up "Figure of Eight" is that I loved Patrick Lynch's medical thrillers, "Omega" and "Carriers". I have no idea why he abandoned the medical thriller genre at which he excelled. This book is inferior to those earlier works. "Figure of Eight" is about Ellen (formerly Yelena) Cusack, a Russian emigre turned champion figure skater. Although she has somewhat fallen out of the limelight since her glory days, she is trying for a comeback after her recent divorce. Unfortunately, she is getting threatening mail from a stalker and she is very frightened. Pete Golding, a security expert who is known for his hotheaded "shoot first and ask questions later" style, is called in by Ellen's agent to investigate the threat. The book deals not only with the threat, but with an unidenified body found on Ellen's property. The book has an intriguing plot, but the characters do not come to life. Ellen is a remote "ice princess". Pete is a loose cannon who has obvious emotional problems. The stalker is the usual crazy whom you find in these types of thrillers. What does work is the gradual unraveling of the truth about Ellen's past. There are some surprising elements here that are unpredictable.

    Intelligent legal thriller
I experienced a bit of trepidation when I started reading this book: an author I hadn't read before,an unfamiliar narrator and fairly long. But, I needn't have worried: this book is an excellent listen. It's intelligently written, from beginning to end. At no time did it seem as though Ms Gutman was "dialling it in". Great characters, great plot and thought-provoking sub-text. Highly recommended.
    a good listen
This is my second Gutman, listened to this one based on enjoying the first. This book started out fairly predictable it seemed but soon turned into a clever "who dunnit". I thoroughly enjoyed the book and blew right through it.

    Different Paths
Much too slow to read as an audiobook
Not as good as I thought it would be.
Would you try another book from Judy Clemens and/or Tavia Gilbert?
I love listening to Tavia Gilbert narrating other stories. But this story by Judy Clemens reminded me of a Mills and Boons story which I don't really enjoy. A story to listen to when there is nothing else.
Has Different Paths turned you off from other books in this genre?
    Yes
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tavia Gilbert?
I don't think you can blame the narrator Tavia Gilbert, she did the best you could do with a story like Different Paths. Maybe a better story would solve the problem.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    No

Length: 7 hrs and 36 mins

    Release date: 10-02-08

    Publisher's Summary:
Detective Robert Miller is assigned to the case. He and his partner begin the task of correlating the details of each crime scene and rapidly things begin to get complicated.
The victims do not officially exist. Their personal details do not register on any known systems. The harder Miller works, the less it makes sense. And as he unearths ever more disturbing facts, Miller must face the truth about the corrupt world that he lives in. It's a grim reality that will put his life in danger.
This is a novel about trust, loyalty, and beliefs which are so ingrained that - when challenged - they leave people with nothing. Vast in scope, A Simple Act of Violence is an exposé of the brutality of unchecked power, the seduction of greed and the insidious nature of corruption. It is also a story of love and of trust that somehow managed to survive the very worst that the world could throw at it.
    Members Reviews:
    Unexpectedly profound thriller
What a surprise. What appears to be a standard serial killer hard-bitten cop thriller becomes so much more in Ellory's skillful hands. Political conspiracy has never felt so profound.
