This Last Judgement Against All Things Unpretty
What do you know about Renaissance art? Narrowing down, how about Michelangelo Buonarroti? Don't know? Well, this book was educationally informal about this particular artist, most especially about the history behind one of his most regarded paintings, The Last Judgement.
Add the history of that (then) controversial painting with fictional cult basing its view of anything pretty on that one painting and willing to destroy anything and anyone that doesn't stand up to it, and you can imagine how tense this book can be.
As with her debut novel, Sharon Rogers creates very unique characters, each with their own entirely unique style and characteristics (rather than stagnant repeats of each other with slight differences other than name) that add to the overall mystery, and though not all get the same amount of page time, they do get their appropriate amount so as to not be overbearing nor underbearing (okay, I take that back, I would've loved to read more about that one particular hacker...), as well as the secret organizations mentioned (none real, but all interesting enough).
While most of the book got cleared up, there are a few things I wish got cleared up, rather than be used as red herrings. Nonetheless, this was a pretty solid sophomore novel.
Great Story
I am new to this author and was wonderfully amazed by the depth this book had. There are plot twists and great depth to character development. It is not a book to take up as a "quick read", but better as one to take time with in order to enjoy the nuances of the characters.
The only thing I can think of that I didn't like about the book was the character name "Hummingbird". However, the story is plenty riveting for that detail to be quickly overlooked.
I recommend this book to those who love a great story and talking about that story with others. I feel it would be great for a book club. There are enough exhilarating details in this book to give a book club plenty to talk about.
Another great story from Sharon Carter Rogers!
I loved Sharon's first book, Sinner, and couldn't wait to dive into Unpretty. She didn't disappoint.
Once again, I found Sharon's characters engaging. I liked that I could tie two of the characters back to Sinner and that Galway is mentioned! That being said, you don't have to know anything about the characters from Sinner to enjoy Unpretty. The two stories really don't have anything to do with one another in terms of plot.
I expected Unpretty to be a similar type of story as Sinner, a supernatural thriller. I was wrong. Unpretty is very much in the real world without the supernatural element.
