    Great story, Narrator so-so
I love Sarah Mayberry books, but this was a little hard to listen to because, although the Narrator had a nice voice, something was off throughout the read. Maybe it was her inflections, accenting the wrong words which made it distracting, pulling me out of the story again and again. It just sounded like she was reading and not emoting in a convincing way. It's not easy to narrate/perform audio books, but the listener should be able to lose themselves in the story instead of wishing the narrator's performance jived with the story and the emotions and the characters.
Book - Good. Narrator- Not so good
I thought this was a pretty good book and if I had read the book, it would have been 4 stars. But since this is an audio book, I am also rating the narrator and I just wasn't terribly impressed. At the beginning of the book, the narration isn't so bad, but by the time I got to the last 1/3 of the book, I really wanted to know the ending but thought I might end up banging my head against the wall because of all of the pauses in the sentences. To me it seemed like the narrator was reading sentences such as, "She thought she would telephone him later." as "She thought she. Would Telephone Him. Later." There were a few other problems with the narration, such as Liam supposedly all hot and bothered but when he said something like, "Zoe, I have to have you", it sounded like he was bored and uninterested. But overall, it wasn't too bad *PAUSE* except for *PAUSE* all the choppy sentences *PAUSE*.

One Whole and Perfect Day by Judith Clarke
    One Whole and Perfect Day
    Judith Clarke
I was expecting one of those typical `chick lit' books when I began reading this story, but was soon pleasantly surprised. `One Whole and Perfect day' is a rather charming tale of a young girl named Lily who finds a way to unite her dysfunctional family for one day. This is a story that looks into the heart of what makes a group of people as unique as any individual.
Lily sees herself as someone who conforms and her family as `freakish' in that they don't conform to any of her own notions of normalcy. Whether she likes it or not, it takes a love affair of the heart to turn Lily around and confront her own insecurities, as she delves headfirst into the heady depths of her first love. What underlies the whole story is an interwoven and heart-felt narrative about the complexities of father and daughter relationships and family complexities.
Different characters enter the story with equal strength and presence - all casting their own unique light upon her extended family. Judith Clarke subtly deals with issues that face people at different stages of their lives, the common theme of the story seems to be that the main characters all seem to be searching for something just beyond reach.
Is Lily looking for love in Daniel, the "most handsome guy in year 11," or is she really looking for someone to replace her absent father? Lily's `Pop' battles with a failing memory as he desperately tries to cling to remnants of his past and ultimately, himself and his family. Lily's mother, Marigold, is plagued by self-doubt and comforts herself with memories of her past and a time when her family were together, sometimes bringing more than just her work home with her. Lonnie, Lily's brother who lives in a boarding house while attending university, floats in the background keeping all the other characters guessing.
These are just a few of the characters that populate Lily's world and for one `whole and perfect day' they are re-united for a family birthday party, in all their quirky but rather ordinary glory and Lily realizes that what she's got, and what she hasn't, might not be so bad after all.
    Enjoyable!
This was definitely an enjoyable read. It doesn't have an intense plot, or any gasp-worthy twists and turns. The title is perfect, because that's what the main extent of the plot is- family and friends trying struggling to be whole, and one girl who pushes for it so she can have her "perfect day."
What I really liked about it was the changing characters. Though it's written in 3rd person, each character has a story and purpose (except for one character- Jessaline.

    No no no
I hated this mostly because of the narration I found Gabra Zackman accent in this audio false and grating. When I listened I could picture this as a bad Lifetime movie. I have as yet not been able to finish it.

    Flat
I usually love to listen to silly (but sizzling) romance novels but this book was so joyless and the characters so lifeless and unmoving that I couldn't even finish it. While the narrator has a nice voice, I'm fairly certain her utterly humorless reading is a large part of the problem. In any case, unless you're curious to see how sex on a tropical island could be dull, I recommend you keep shopping.
    Just bearable
I have listened to lots of romance novels lately and have to say that although the love scenes are great, the story was extremely boring. Not a lot of development of the plot. I was less than satisfied with these two main characters.
    Misplaced Love
What made the experience of listening to When She Was Bad... the most enjoyable?
family PI business that our young heroine wants to impress.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Jewel thief Aunt who doesn't give up after 40 years of unrequited love
What does Gabra Zackman bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
I have over 100 of her excellent reads, and all of her Harlequin Blaze reads. Great job on these light short stories
    Any additional comments?
    use new 1.25x speed
    Eh...
This was ok, very predictable and not that captivating. I could take it or leave it - if you have extra credits then you can use it on this, otherwise I would pass.
    sub-par
    Sub-par for Harlequin Blaze.
--Reader was good, except she sometimes overdid "male" voices.
--Recurrent fantasy of slave girl/ plantation owner son does NOT work. (slave girl set up sometimes works to set up bondage fantasy scenarios-- here there is NO bondage, so the slave girl setup is useless -- and just reminded me every time (which was A LOT) that slave women were often forced into sexual relationships with owners/ owners' sons -- YUCK, not sexy)
-- also, SEVERAL grammatical errors in reading (was that the reader or in the original text?) -- errrors were so glaring that they jarred me out of the reading.

    Have to listen again
What a great listen. I loved the characters, the plot and everything about the book.
Of the over 800 books in my database that I have read only 5 of them are rated 5 star, 3 of them are by Katherine Sutcliffe.
    Loved Listening.
I bought this on the recommendation of other readers on audible site. Never read a book by this author before. When it ended I wished it would just go on and on! Reader read it very well. I would listen at night and go on for longer than I intended. Great bedtime story.
    Interesting story
This is a difficult book for me to rate. For much of the story, I was uncomfortable with the actions of both lead characters. I was also frustrated by their lack of communication. As the story unfolds, you understand the characters better, and even sympathize, but both Whitehorse and Leah are very flawed and stubborn individuals and not always likeable.
Johnny Whitehorse, as introduced in the beginning of the book, is selfish and opportunistic. His relationship with Delores is self-serving (for both) and put me off. The entire restaurant scene with Delores and Johnny, and Leah and her date is weird and unsettling. And I guess that's the watch-word for the entire book: it's unsettling.
Sutcliffe gets on a few soap boxes during the novel, mostly about the plight of Native Americans and the needs of children with cerebral palsy. The monologues are informative and even moving, but feel forced.
My last complain is the abrupt ending of the book. I'm not a big epilogue fan, but there is absolutely no denouement after the final climatic scene.
On the plus side, the writing is excellent, and the author does an marvelous job giving the reader a sense of time and place. The descriptions were detailed without being wordy, drawing the reader into the sights, sounds, smells, and emotions. The main characters, while not always likeable, are very real, flaws and all. Some of the best scenes in the book are between Leah and her son--very beautifully done.
    Kate Reading's narration is excellent!
    Great suspense
Strongly recommend this audio. Keeps your attention, not boring, always some new development. Great to listen to while doing boring chores. Enjoy!!
    Whitehorse
WOW! I just finished this book and I must say that it was a very thrilling read. The characters were more than likeable and the interaction between each of them was great. The romance was outstanding and the story line was good as well. I also couldn't believe how much I laughed and cried with this book.

With some recent bad press and his familys wine empire to uphold, Alexander thinks a wedding will help turn things around. Yet convincing Loren to be his bride may not be as easy as he had hoped.
    Members Reviews:
    not bad
This book was okay. I preferred the other two books in this series. I didn't feel as close to the characters as I did with the other two Castillo brothers.
This is not a medieval story
I feel I have to clarify the fact that this book is set in modern times because we have a father who promises the hand of his baby girl to the little boy of his friend to settle a blood debt. Also, there is a curse involved. This book gets better towards the end but the characters are still somewhat irritating. ââï
    Frustrating
This book had potential, but the way it unfolded was just horrible. The hero has no regard or respect for the heroine. The things he does are so insulting to her. It's hard to like a book when you are pretty much annoyed the whole way through.
    ****** Spoilers Below ******
He actually has his previous mistress/personal assistant plan the wedding and allows her to assist his fiance with errands etc. So, of course the heroine finds out that he used to be involved with his assistant. She also isn't sure if he plans to keep a mistress while they are married. Does she confront him about it? Does she tell him how crass it is that he would have his ex-mistress plan her wedding and take her shopping? NO! And, yet she is still going to marry him?!! Because she loves him. Sure, I can see why.
And he's an idiot. A so called playboy, man of the world, can't foresee a possible problem with having his ex-mistress and fiance alone together?
OMG, then there is the prenuptial agreement.
The heroine is basically a doormat and the events that occur were just frustrating.
2 1/2 Stars Heroine was too naive...
This book is very generic for the romance genre and there is nothing wrong with that. My problem is not the story itself, but the H & H they ruin the story ha ha. First off the heroine Loren is 25 and Alex the hero is 33. I point this out because the actions of Loren are not of a 25 year old no matter how sheltered you are, but of someone a lot younger.
Alex goes to New Zealand to convince Loren to become his bride because his great grandfather believes in a curse that is a hundred of years old. (You don't learn what the curse is till the middle of the book...should of been in the prologue or something, so I was not totally lost on that subject.) His grandfather is afraid that the curse is true and Alex has this bright idea to marry someone he has been betrothed to for 25 years....Loren. She left when she was fifteen and he hasn't seen her ten years, but why not marry her! She will solve all his problems. This is when the book got ridiculous. Alex asks her to marry him and she says yes because she is in love with him.....really I mean really I know she needs to say yes, but it shouldn't of been that easy because they spend a day together after she says yes and then she goes to Australia, so they can be married.
